What’s going on with my Marmite?

I definitely remember thinking Marmite had become stiffer. This was possibly around last winter, because I put it down to the house being so cold.
The last couple of jars of Marmite have been relatively runny. Probably like it was before. However, now that I’m used to it being so thick I can eat a heaped spoon of it without spilling it, it seems too runny.
is it just me, or are they fucking about with the consistency of marmite?

But it used to be really stiff back in the day. You couldn’t spread it evenly at all, so there’d be a ferocious mouthful and a no-Marmite mouthful. I remember reading a Top Tip in my nan’s Take A Break about mixing the jar into a half-tub of marge so you could spread it.

Now it drips. Wrong wrong wrong.

Clarabellawilliamson · 24/01/2024 17:19

Nigella Lawson has a recipe in one of her books for marmite sandwiches where she beats it with butter before spreading. I've never been arsed to do it but I bet it's well nice.

I think it's thicker too, I thought it was just that our kitchen was glacially cold!

poopoolala · 24/01/2024 17:20

I noticed this and so have my friends . You can't spread it ! I bought all the alternatives and you can spread them all but the don't taste the same ! Annoying!

I can't get the usual Marmite locally
Only the reduced sugar one.

Do you mean reduced salt?

They must do. I'm sure there is no sugar in Marmite.

endofanera23 · 24/01/2024 17:36

I get the reduced salt Sainsbury's version and prefer both the taste and runniness to actual Marmite.

kuchisabishii · 24/01/2024 17:36

It seems to depend on the size jar. My usual shop only stocks the medium jars but when I go elsewhere and buy the big jars the consistency is much better

Ooh, maybe I'll go back to big jars to see if that helps.

As for those deliberately mixing up spread/butter and marmite😱... I bet that is tasty and solves the stiffness problem, but the marmite purist in me is absolutely disgusted. I don't know how I feel exactly but it feels weird so I'll just ignore you.

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 24/01/2024 18:25

Nestofwalnuts · 24/01/2024 14:12

I'm the only one who eats it so it lasts a while. I notice it's soft when you first open the pot but gets successively stiffer so by the end of the jar it is very thick but when you open a jar it is softer.

@Nestofwalnuts

if you want it to stay softer/runnier, you need to use a clean spoon/knife not double dip as the butter/spread solidifies

since I started doing that it's been much better.

@StillNoFuckingEyeDeer I just opened a new jar the other day, it was on the runnier side. Definitely kept slipping off the spoon even when I was winding the spoon. but not As 'runny' as say maple syrup.

.

TheFlis · 24/01/2024 18:27

Our latest jar is definitely runnier and slightly lighter in colour than it has ever been.

hattie43 · 24/01/2024 18:33

I think it's stiffer aswell , it rips my toast now when I spread it

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 24/01/2024 18:33

KnickerlessParsons · 24/01/2024 14:08

I don't know, but I do know the taste is not as strong as it was in my youth. Back in the day, little dabs were enough on my toast. These days I find I have to spread it all over.

@KnickerlessParsons I don't think it is either. I think that's partly changes to marmite (probably to meet some daft legislation) but also in part our taste buds.

i have a friend who still applies it in little dabs, i have to remind him it's for ME & have to remember not to put lashings on for him!!

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 24/01/2024 18:36

LaChatte · 24/01/2024 14:30

I wish this was my problem with Marmite, since I caught covid 3 years ago I can now taste the fucking celery in it. Gutted.

@LaChatte

oh no!

Hopefully in time it'll come right!!

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 24/01/2024 18:38

I can’t stand yellow spread (or butter, whatever) and don’t trust anyone not to contaminate my marmite, so I mix the spread with marmite for DS and just use a big spoon for myself. It was definitely a lot less messy when the marmite was stiffer.

OP posts:
KnickerlessParsons · 24/01/2024 19:18

Perhaps it is our age.

If you want to soften your marmite, heat it up a bit. I put the jar on the top of the toaster while the bread is roasting. Softens it up nicely.

StBrides · 24/01/2024 19:24

YES!

I thought this was just me?? It's impossible to spread and destroys the bread

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/01/2024 20:03

I buy the 600g tubs from Amazon.
They have been fine.

What’s going on with my Marmite?
Sleeptastic · 24/01/2024 20:55

I have seen these and am tempted but something deep within me feels strongly that Marmite belongs in glass jars. 😂

Sleeptastic · 24/01/2024 20:56

JeMangeUnCroissant · 24/01/2024 16:08

The whole jar?! Or just a bit?

The whole jar. I am a renegade.

Countrylife2002 · 24/01/2024 21:01

I found myself eyeing up the peanut butter marmite the other day. I’m becoming more addicted to marmite the older I get. I had it twice today.

It’s still very runny where I live. I wouldn’t like thick marmite sounds annoying.

PinkTonic · 24/01/2024 21:06

I opened a new jar yesterday and it’s definitely a much softer consistency than normal. I also haven’t been able to find the squeezy pack at all since there was a shortage during the pandemic, and M&S haven’t had the marmite soft cheese for weeks. Something is going on with the marmite 👀

Marmite soft cheese?

this I need

magimedi · 24/01/2024 21:17

I live in France. Marmite is black gold to expats!! 10 euros for the 125g jar!!!

We are not bothered about its stiffness!

You got me bang to rights guv. I do use the butter knife. Blush I will follow your example and endeavour to develop better marmite table manners!

Sorry for taking this lovely thread off in a slightly more serious direction but I noticed I was getting far more addicted to marmite as I get older. Then the other day I read that high salt intake can trick a calcium-deprived body into thinking it has enough calcium. As our bones lose calcium as we get older, it might be a good idea to take a supplement and see if the craving lessens a bit, in case that's the reason.

Of course, it's still great for all the B-vits and if you have low blood pressure, it's great too.
