50 Gifts

Challdell · 23/01/2024 18:31

Hi
My Sister will be 50th at the beginning of March and we have just found out that she will be having her long awaited surgery 2 weeks before so will be unable to celebrate the way we / she had planned. She also will be pretty much out of action for atleast 6 months.

i have foolishly agreed with my Mum to give her 50 gifts as her present.

Im looking for various value of gifts but it’s not as easy as I first thought.
Has anyone done anything similar or lead me to where I can find some inspiration please?

I am 50 and I already have everything I need. 50 gifts would just overwhelm me. Don't do it, it's a really not a good idea.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 23/01/2024 21:32

I'd have a word with your mum and tell her you have thought a bit more and it's a really terrible idea, and try to identify a really lovely gift that your sister will actually love.

I was at a friend's 50th birthday party and someone had bought her 50 gifts in a huge box to open.

For one thing, it took ages to unwrap and look at each thing which massively detracted from the rest of the proceedings. The quality of the gifts were as you would expect questionable as the expense of £1 each would work out to be pricey enough. And lots of them were 'jokey' since its hard to keep to an extended theme. I think most of them were put back in the box not to be looked at again. What a waste.
The rest of the presents were much more appreciated no matter how mundane.

This exact thing happened to me on my 50th. I'm sure the thought was there but tbh I'd rather have had a lovely book or bottle of wine than 50 gifts of low value.

@kinkalli when you say you "have everything you need" do you not buy things like new books when they come out or things that need replacing (like a new bag or something). Surely you can't literally have everything you are ever going to need?
Surely you treat yourself every so often.

CookingFromScratchVirgin · 23/01/2024 21:36

I love the idea.
Even little things id use shampoos, ha d creams, etc
Wine
Choc
Photo frame

Although id be happy with 50 pairs of pjs!

My brother bought be 40 creme eggs for my 40th which was great as it was essentially one gift. In general I would hate 40 small gifts. With a budget of £500 you could get a brilliant gift.

Now you're talking......... Grin

amalfilemonpie · 23/01/2024 21:29

50 bulbs for the garden? 50 individual hand made chocs? 50 of anything small that you know she likes.

Or this makes sense if you are stuck on the '50 gifts' idea

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 23/01/2024 21:42

Cheaper gifts I would truly appreciate- assume you need some fillers
Favourite chocolate
Sweets
Space masks
Nail file
Cosy socks
Candle

Needmorelego · 23/01/2024 21:42

@NewName24 that's it - it doesn't have to be 50 different things. It could be 5 or 6 different types of things so 10 or so of that type. So 10 chocolate bars (if a chocolate fan).

jackstini · 23/01/2024 21:48

I had 40 gifts for my 40th and 50 for my 50th - one of those I was not in a good place at the time and it meant the world to me

Some were very small but let me know they knew me. You need to be quite personal

Favourite wines - red, white, sparkling
Quality Biscuits & chocolates
My Perfume, and the matching body lotion
Tickets for shows
Short break vouchers
Handbag
Groupons for meals - afternoon teas, tapas, chocolate cocktails
Books from favourite authors
Special skincare I can't usually afford
Crackle wick candles
Cashmere socks
Concert tickets - music, theatre
Massage voucher
Babysitting night
Promise to go on a long walk with me
Luxury dressing gown
Heated mouse (I suffer from cold fingers!)
Beautiful scarf
Voucher for my hairdresser
Hotel voucher
A tree planted

givemeevenmorestrength · 23/01/2024 21:49

@Challdell more ideas;
Photo frame (and you could pic of you both in it)
New phone cover
Handbag or purse
Card holder
Face mask
Mini Prosecco
Nice pen/notepad
Afternoon tea (delivered)

All things that are useable and not tat (like most people seem to think you're buying 🤣) and you can buy reasonable or a bit more expensive.

Challdell · 23/01/2024 21:52

Thank you for all the responses from people who have given good ideas.
As I said there will be a mixture of values of gifts.
ideas that I have that will be under £10 each.
scratch cards
Smellies I know she uses
red wine
lindt chocolates
green and black chocolate
car air freshener if her dog ( replacing a lost one)
perfumed drawer liners always uses.
nail clippers (family Joke)
50p coin
magazine
make up hair band.
mini toiletries for her travels

middle range ideas

nightie / pjs
voucher for nails
scarf
bottle of gin
mini perfumes
interchangable bag strap
costume earrings
personalised luggage tag

higher value gifts

£500 is a rough budget thinking what we would normally spend and adding a bit more for a special birthday but happy to go over for the right presents.

Thank you there are some really good ideas there.
i just thought being pretty much stuck in doors atleast she can have a little gift each day. Some luxury, some useful but definitely no tat!!

I’d rather have a nice decent present for £500 than any of those on your list, which I could buy for myself. It’s her 50th birthday. Don’t give her stuff like this, if you have £500. It’s really crappy tbh.

Challdell · 23/01/2024 22:02

Thank you, I love the idea of afternoon tea delivered. That’s the sort of thing we would normally do as birthday/ Xmas presents. We went to the Shard last week for my Xmas present.

Nice notepad and pen is also a lovely idea,

If she is recovering from surgery I think it's a lovely idea for her to have something to open every day whilst she's laid up at home .

I think I would like some activities - a book, a magazine, colouring and pens,
jigsaw, various craft kits, puzzle book, face mask, manicure set with hand cream and nail polish. Actually - several books or a kindle and some e books ! Something that grows eg I have some daffodil bulbs in a pot but would need to be seasonal . Maybe a little holiday (weekend away) to look forward to when she's recovered .

Maybe some nice food too - nice chocs goes without saying - but maybe a voucher for some nice ready meals (like Cook).

A nice lounging set ? A blanket and cushion?

All personal as to what your sister enjoys - but some ideas anyway .

Challdell · 23/01/2024 22:03

So what would you suggest we buy her?

OP posts:
furryfrontbottom · 23/01/2024 22:06

Four cases of wine and two bottles of gin.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 23/01/2024 22:09

I would hate the photo album by the way .

Well, you have four pages of suggestions?

I’d hate colouring and pens. I’m not a toddler.

Challdell · 23/01/2024 22:12

Thank you a few ideas there I can work with. I’m thinking an Amazon voucher for ebooks as she does read a lot but I would struggle to choose.
Daffodils are her favourite flower and wouid be in season so I’m sure I could get something like that.

OP posts:
Challdell · 23/01/2024 22:13

Actually had 4 pages of telling me I’m buying tat!!

Challdell · 23/01/2024 22:14

She would love that I’m sure the alcohol will cover multiple gifts.
Actually just thought of some form of pre-made cocktails too.

It’s your sister. You know more what she likes, if 50 gifts are her thing then just go for it. You don’t need us.
