Do you look your age ?

Not wishing to brag, but I often feel I could pass for 5 - 10 years younger. I've never asked anybody this question and I'm purely using the judgement of my own eyes. If I go back in time 39 years to when my late Dad was the same age as I am now (53), I see a man in early middle age with a full head of black hair - some greying - but a rather lined face and seemingly expanding ears! I, on the other hand, have a lot more grey hair than he did but a much denser texture and no obvious facial lines. I've always had bags under my eyes but not Peter Woods proportions! My sister is 61 but she could pass for late 40s, in my opinion.

Maybe there's no right or right or wrong answer. I could have a skewed personal perception or perhaps we're all living longer and I'm seeing that played out at close quarters.

PS. The old man had, along with Mum, raised seven children by the time he was my age whereas I have no children. So, no parental stress!

@January24

I don’t know why you’re not allowed to say you look younger on here. Many people actually do!

Yeah on mumsnet only though! In real life, when you look at them properly/closer, the vast VAST majority of people look their age - within 5-6 years either side. Why wouldn't they? Confused

Some women on here get so huffy and offended if you say this. Like it's a personal slight! 😬

Someone posted a photo on here last night - and invited people to guess her age. (Turned out she was 60.) Me and a few others said she looked around 55.

She was really annoyed and said 'I suppose I will have to take THAT then.' Hmm Offended at people thinking she was ONLY 5 years younger. Clearly thought she looked much younger! 😂

And one other poster attacked another poster, and said she was being 'unkind' by saying this poster who was 60 looked mid 50s. As apparently as she didn't look a day over 40-42! 😆

You don't know a lot of people who look way younger than their age January24. Because NO-ONE DOES.

.

January24 · 23/01/2024 17:58

Of course people can look their age or younger or older. It’s daft to say every single human being looks their actual age.

KirstenBlest · 23/01/2024 18:13

Yawn

Iwantmyoldnameback · 23/01/2024 19:04

I think we have lost sight of how people of certain ages should look.

I totally agree with this.

But not should look; do look.

Neriah · 23/01/2024 19:29

I think I look my age. I sometimes feel older. But three people in the last few weeks have asked how I can afford to take early retirement. I'm actually retiring in September at 67 years old because my boss begs well...

Jessica356 · 23/01/2024 19:42

Yes I think I look my age of 40 although now and again people think I look younger.

TheTecknician · 23/01/2024 21:02

Olivia Newton John always struck me as a woman who's ageing process seemed to have ground to a halt when she was somewhere in her forties. She always looked so fresh and youthful. On the other hand, Gloria Hunniford has aged immaculately but is always very finely dressed and coiffed which does her no harm at all.

Getting ID'd at the shops isn't any kind of evidence you look younger! I don't drink and never have but was buying some wine and Gin as gifts just before Christmas, I was asked for ID to prove my age on both occasions! I am 46 and certainly don't look too young to be buying alcohol.

Don’t know if this was in reply to me or not, I haven’t RTFT.

If you get ID’d on a regular basis then I’d say it means you look younger. If it’s a one off then probably not. I’ve never been able to avoid getting ID’d unless it’s someone who knows me.

However, given the rule of thumb being that you’re supposed to be asked for ID if the person serving thinks you look 25 or under, then it fits what a lot of people are saying. Most people look within 5 years of their age. So me being asked for ID at 31 means I look about mid 20’s at youngest.
Which also fits as when I had my first child at 24 people thought I was late teens.

It’s not really about looking younger or older. Age is hard to judge, who can really define what a certain age looks like. Some people just age better than others due to genetics, diet etc.

sqcrispsal · 24/01/2024 09:23

@Moro93 l don't agree, its not uncommon for me or even my DH to get ID'd buying alcohol. People are just bad at estimating ages it doesn't mean you look younger.

icelollycraving · 24/01/2024 09:29

I am 51. I could pass for maybe 5 years younger on a good day and 101 on others.

x2boys · 24/01/2024 09:36

Haven't read thecfylk.thread but I assume it's full.if posters thinking they look a lot younger than they are as is typical for these threads
I do think people mainly look their age
Yes they may look very good for their age and look better than their peers , but on the whole people look around the age they actually are .

x2boys · 24/01/2024 09:42

SweetBirdsong · 23/01/2024 17:24

Some people mention the gorgeous Floella Benjamin on this type of thread too. One poster said a little while back, (last year!) that she could pass for 30 years younger. (She was 73 and they said she looked 43!) She is a lovely looking woman, and like Denise, she looks younger than her age - but she doesn't look like she is 3-4 years out of her 30s! 😆 Could pass for early 60s - no younger IMO.

Floella looks amazing for age and very natural but she still looks her age imo.

I look older than my age of 47.
But I look a lot younger than my parents generation did at 47.

The clothes and hair styles they had didnt help
My mum and Dad got married in 1971i wss looking through their wedding album my paternal Grandmother would have only Been about 52/53but her hair and clothes aged her terribly she could have looked anywhere between 53 and 73 .

Fizbosshoes · 24/01/2024 11:10

Agree I think overall impression often makes people seem younger rather than their actual face

I am short, fairly slim, have natural dark hair (no grey) which I often wear up, wear casual clothes, often no make up - all of which at a glance I think people can (and do) mistake me for much younger.
My mum at my age was similar height (similar hair colour, although box-dyed) but her hair was a bouffant short style, she wore blouses and (unflattering) calf length skirts and was overweight. She was rarely mistaken for younger but now I look at old pics, facially she barely looked older than I do but the overall impression was of soneone older.
When we moved into our childhood home the lady across the road had white hair, thick glasses, often wore a house-coat. Shes had that style for about 40 years! She seemed "old" at the time but would have been about 40! (She was similar age to our dad who seemed much younger)

LoveSandbanks · 24/01/2024 11:21

I’m think I look my age, which really doesn’t bother me but I look 55 and knackered and I would love to look like I’ve had a good nights sleep once in my life!

CustardySergeant · 24/01/2024 11:34

I don't look my age.

I'll be 70 next month and yet I don't look a day over 125.

You said in your last comment you got ID’d at Christmas, not that it happens on a regular basis.

I also said age is hard to judge.

Me looking slightly younger isn’t just on the basis of getting ID’d but countless other things.

Plus, me looking young enough to be ID’d while I’m early 30’s is completely different to you being ID’s in your late 40’s. I only need to look a few years younger, you need to look half your age!

MargaretThursday · 24/01/2024 18:49

@Moro93
The thing with asking for ID is once they've done that then they have to follow through. They can't say "oh actually now I've looked at you closely I'm happy that you're closer to 65 than 25".

I'm closing in on 50, but got ID-ed by a young rather stressed chap just before Christmas. I think as soon as he said it, he realised that it wasn't needed, but had to go along with it. I told him it had made my day but I have no delusions that I do look under 25, except perhaps from behind if the person's wearing dark sunglasses in a dark room...
🤣

Moro93 · 24/01/2024 19:45

Why are so many posters bitter about the thought of anyone looking younger?
I get if someone is trying to insist they look half their age but someone saying they look a few years younger is not exactly unbelievable.

Surely you’ve heard someone’s age before and thought ‘‘oh, I’d have said they were younger than that’’, or even, ‘’they look way older’’.

Age isn’t easy to guess, it’s also subjective to hairstyle, makeup, lighting etc. Two people of the same age may not look the same age, so one can definitely look younger.

Some people are definitely delusional about how young they think they look but there are definitely a lot of people who do look younger.

Are you all so old and haggered that you get pissed off at anyone who looks younger than their age!

Moro93 · 24/01/2024 19:46

Oh, and I know my previous comment will likely be deleted.

mirror245 · 24/01/2024 19:46

Joan Collins doesn't look 90!

lljkk · 24/01/2024 19:51

JC doesn't move like a 90yo either, she's pretty spry.

Unportula · 24/01/2024 20:22

Joan Collins looks plenty old close up!

She's gorgeous and all that but she looks different from a distance, which is how any pictures of her are framed.

Moro93 · 24/01/2024 15:13

I don't buy alcohol that often as I don't drink and never have and I just turned 46 but when I do buy alcohol or pain killers or even a knife I do get asked for ID, as does my husband who does buy alcohol more often. Getting asked for ID doesn't mean people think you look under 25! If you actually think that you are delusional and have obviously never worked in retail! Its not bitterness, I am very happy with how I look thank you. Why are you so desperate to ensure everyone knows that you look so much younger, if you actually did look so great you would probably just chuckle at this thread and move on. If you look so much younger than your age, post a clear photo of yourself, if you won't do that I suspect you are living in a fantasy!
