I'm sure the majority of Conservatives MPs know they've lost the election. They've shredded their credibility with Brexit, levelling up, 40 new hospitals, Truss, HS2 etc.
Now it's all about wrangling to get control post election. Those 5 families (6 now?) aren't fighting for their party to win, they are fighting for their seat (and donors) so they can stay in the game.
The Newsagents podcast was very interesting this evening - the Pop Cons as an off shoot of the US Heritage Foundation (via Tufton Street). They follow quite a pattern - lay the blame for the state of the country on external institutions. Claim significant voter fraud. Claim leftists have taken over internal institutions. (And in America oppose abortion). Pretend they haven't been in government.
And it's not just Truss - Dowden, Fox, Paterson (remember him), Badenoch, Gove, Farage, Johnson, etc have all spoken at Heritage Foundation events.
But there is a whole hinterland of rich donors pulling strings.
This is an old article (2019) and a long read but it's very interesting at shining a light on the honing of right wing thinking in the US, UK and beyond.
