Hmmm, I need to see the terms and conditions @MrTiddlesTheCat. is that square one when Cameron first walked through the door of no. 10 or the square one when Rishi did. They’ve had a lot of square ones…

Edit: actually it’d be great if he could pull us out of the hole to square one before he starts acting like he’s made some great leaps forward. At best he’s been firefighting the problems his party and ministerial positions have created. Cheeky mofo.

Sunak caught out lying again

Rishi Sunak said in a Telegraph article today that 18-week waits in the NHS have fallen in the past year.

That’s not correct. They’ve risen. (He may have been thinking about 18 month waits instead.)

Rishi Sunak wrong to say 18-week waits have fallen since pledge - Full Fact

The Prime Minister may have meant to say in a Telegraph article that waits of 18 months have fallen, which they have.

Always worth throwing out the lies though. Some people will believe them.

Telegraph seems awfully sloppy with its facts...

A print article in today’s Daily Telegraph claims new projections show the UK population will grow to 73.7 million by “mid-2026”.

As was correctly reported in the online version of the article, this is the estimated population by mid-2036, not mid-2026.

12 hr trolley waits 3000 times worse in 2023 than 2011.

That seems like the sort of square 1 we could start going back to.

If you hear More or Less, they were talking about trolley waits and winter stats
Not good

Also explains Inheritance Tax and why so few people pay it

How long will we live? Who pays inheritance tax? How did the NHS perform this winter?

Thing is, they believe this politics as bad reality show is what people want. And if the 'Starmer is boring ' brigade are any indication, they may have a point.
Me, I want sober, capable, grown up politicians.

100% agree.

It's frustrating

This is old and I think has been shared before but is my favourite NHS waiting list graph.

It should really start at 0 on the Y axis - but it does get the point across.

IClaudine · 31/01/2024 21:37

The scare mongering about conscription is being ramped up again on MN.

DuncinToffee · 31/01/2024 21:50

There is a lot of deflection going on on the Brexit checks thread as well.

IClaudine · 31/01/2024 21:52

It is really hard right now to separate the genuine threads and posters from the ones with dubious intentions.

I trust you lot, though!

Party of law and order...

The government’s decision to commission an independent review into criminal legal aid and then ignore its urgent recommendations has been ruled unlawful.

The High Court recognises a justice system “coming apart at the seams,” which “depends to an unacceptable degree on the goodwill and generosity of spirit of those working within it.”

x.com/barristersecret/status/1752650631691588013?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

They'll throw money at the Rwandan government but not at our criminal justice system.

RafaistheKingofClay · 31/01/2024 23:56

Didn’t Sunak say at PMQs this afternoon that his party always followed the law.

DuncinToffee · 01/02/2024 00:00

He did, guess he couldn't recall the Covid fines either.

L1ttledrummergirl · 01/02/2024 00:13

Sunak lies more than Johnson and I didn't think that was possible.

Either he's this this really clever man whose masterplan will save us all, but is constantly lying to us, or he's incredibly stupid and can't remember anything from one minute to the next. Whichever it is, it doesn't make for a good PM.

Some of these threads are sickening.

This is a terrible state of affairs, Mike Freer Conservative MP, for Finchley and Golders Green, stepping down at the next general election, because of fears of his personal safety.

Who'd be an MP? Who'd want to stand?

news.sky.com/story/mike-freer-minister-to-stand-down-as-mp-over-personal-safety-fears-after-death-threats-and-arson-attack-13061089

tobee · 01/02/2024 00:36

I'm sure Mike Freer isn't the first or will be the last to think this of any political stripe.

newnamethanks · 01/02/2024 07:09

Oh no, poor Mr Freeman can't afford the mortgage on £120k pa plus expenses Brings a tear to my eye. Go fund me seems the least we can do for him. He must have some very expensive habits.

Quite agree tobee.
I've had a range of MPs, several of whom did not reflect my own politics, but I can't imagine any circumstances where I'd threaten them or their families.

I remember Heidi Allen and Anna Soubry talking about the threats made against them during the Brexit debates.

One small means to combat this must be how speakers & the media presents political arguments. (Not just political arguments either - I'm sure it spans a number of public figures, royalty etc).
