For anybody else who is literally in the eye of the storm. Am in Northern Ireland and it’s horrendous. I am normally a very calm, rational person but the sheer force of this storm is making me sick with anxiety. Power is out, our road is blocked by fallen trees and my friends roof has been partially ripped off her house.

We lost over a million healthy trees in a single forest here in Northumberland during Arwen.

I dread to think how many more now.

I'm Borders & there are still trees that came down in Arwen at the edge of fields that need disposed of. There is such a backlog still. So sad to lose so many.

Elderflower14 · 22/01/2024 11:01

I came downstairs this morning. Mum said she had seen on the national news about a greenhouse on a train track. I went back upstairs with me tea, looked on ds2s local FB page in Kent and the greenhouse was half a mile from his flat!!
I'm in Suffolk and we were supposed to miss it but the wind was roaring away outside!!

As soon as I can get a tree surgeon booked I’m taking these mature trees down. Terrified of them coming down!

Don't get the mature trees taken down. They are a natural windbreaker. the wind would be far more damaging without them. Obviously get them checked and prunes as necessary. Normally only the I'll/dying trees fall over.

I think you must be roughly in my neck of the woods judging by your earlier post too. Howdy neighbour!

Yes it's awful. One of our favourite woods to take the dog is still closed after Arwen so I can't see it opening any time soon now. It's so very sad to see so much damage.

@CarterBeatsTheDevil
I can see her point. She would have to claim on her own insurance for her METAL car, because you were irresponsible with your bins! You want her to potentially loose full no claims because you couldn't be arsed to take sensible precautions?🙄
She should have dragged it back up wind of your car. That might have prompted you to do something.

I had this last night. Taking dog out after supper to find neighbour 's recycling boxes blowing round my car. Not the first time. Threw them back outside his front door. Hard plastic can certainly dent metal.

Hi @MILLYmo0se . Where is that map from please? Ta

I s/s it last night so not entirely sure, probably shared by Carlow Weather or Irish weather online FB pages?
And another storm rolling in tomorrow evening, orange alert for some of Irish West coast

Biddie191 · 22/01/2024 12:07

Hope you're all OK, it was pretty scary out there. I'm S Wales, and bad enough here.

SapphireSeptember · 22/01/2024 13:06

My patio table blew over (a heavy metal and glass one) which has never happened before, so even in East Anglia it was a bit scary (we had an Amber weather warning.) I'm surprised that the chairs that go with the table stayed put! I'm in a basement flat, and where my patio is there's a dip and steps to go up to street level, so I'm a bit more protected. If things had got really bad I'd have hidden in the bathroom, as that hasn't got any windows.

I hope everyone is safe this morning and there's not too much damage to your homes. 💐 There's nothing wrong with being scared, especially with those winds you were getting in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Well, I'm grateful my neighbour came to tell me rather than chucking the bins at my front door, and I've just ordered a bin clamp!

Ishaloadacrap · 22/01/2024 16:51

Thunder, lightning and hailstones this afternoon. Feel so sorry for the people out trying to restore power supplies and clear the roads.
And another amber weather warning for the west coast of Ireland tomorrow😣

@CarterBeatsTheDevil No I'm not triggered, no imminent neighbours. The house at the bottom of my lane let their bin smash into their neighbours car. It caused thousands of pounds of damage. Shock horror, they didn't want to pay for it, he got hit with a £400 excess, lost his no claims and a further 5 years of higher premiums. My bin is chained up. (live on the moors)

AInightingale · 22/01/2024 17:16

Yes, hail too, and the rain was absolutely ice-cold. God help anyone working for the power companies, awful day still in NI.

SapphireSeptember · 22/01/2024 18:50

Apparently there's lightning near Colchester at the moment. Weird weather. (I went off to look at lightning maps.) West coast of Scotland got hit quite a bit as well.

@Ishaloadacrap Hope you and yours will be alright. 💐

Well, I wouldn't want to be responsible for any of that, I admit - they'll be clamped to the wall for the next storm!

@NanaRant Could I just ask what are the good ear-plugs you have? I am in need! Thanks.

I drove up to the top of Derry for my hospital appointment today(4.5 hours each way for a 15min app 😭) and I think I saw all 4 seasons. There was some lovely sun and blue sky, some hail, some lightning, and some wind so strong it was blowing the car around. I only came across a few trees partially blocking the road thankfully.

NanaRant · 23/01/2024 10:20

@ovenchips Here they are. They take a bit of getting used to but worth the perseverance - I couldn't be without them now!

@NanaRant That's really kind of you. Thanks.

They are already in my Amazon basket!

AInightingale · 23/01/2024 21:53

There were houses badly burned in Donegal by that lightning, @ProfessorPipsqueak.

SapphireSeptember · 23/01/2024 23:53

I've just been out to haul the bins to a more sheltered spot, as they'd got blown over and to pick up the rubbish that was rattling around the driveway. It actually sounds worse out there than it did on Sunday, and we don't even have a weather warning this time round. I left my table where it was, as I didn't want it getting blown over again and potentially shattering (although one of the things I picked up from the drive was a glass jar that was fine!)

Batten down the hatches folks, we're in for a bumpy ride!

@AInightingale Oh no, I hope no one was hurt. 😟

MeinKraft · 23/01/2024 23:57

Yeah it sounds like the roof is about to take off here.
