For anybody else who is literally in the eye of the storm. Am in Northern Ireland and it’s horrendous. I am normally a very calm, rational person but the sheer force of this storm is making me sick with anxiety. Power is out, our road is blocked by fallen trees and my friends roof has been partially ripped off her house.

How strong are the winds? I didn't think the storm was that heavy, weather reports aren't showing winds higher than the 50smph...Sounds like they got it wrong

Try reading reports for areas other than your own!!!

MariaLuna · 22/01/2024 01:19

rabbits clearly didn’t get the memo

Lol, thanks for a bit of light relief.

Yea, it's really scary.

Risun · 22/01/2024 01:22

I gave up alcohol 2 days ago. I'm now swigging an emergency bottle of brandy.

Might attempt bed when the effects kick in.

TrentCrimmOfTheIndependent · 22/01/2024 01:26

Sorry OP, hope it gets better soon.

Went to pick up DS (student) from Gatwick returning from Italy this evening. Saw the plane circle the airport six times, then cross the channel to France. Thank god for flightradar, as Gatwick was still saying the flight was expected at X time, when he had already entered French airspace. 🤷‍♀️

No one around to help the passengers at Paris CDG, just an angry Frenchman at passport control telling them they were in the wrong bit of the airport??? Have spent the last three hours helping him organise a hotel in Paris, transport there and a Eurostar home tomorrow. And paying for it. 🤦‍♀️But at least he is safe. And kudos to the pilots. 🌟

Hope everyone is ok. X

Minymile · 22/01/2024 01:33

Parts of Scotland are on red alert now.
You should have a look at flight radar. Planes are all over the place. Those headed for Edinburgh ( for example ) have flown to Cologne, Amsterdam Düsseldorf all over the place just to land.
Birmingham airport and LGW not doing well either for some of the lighter Wizz air planes.
I d rather be on the ground than in the sky at the moment

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 22/01/2024 01:45

I'm in NI as well. My town is high above seas level and this storm is bad. Luckily still have power. There is almost 750 power outages across NI.

blorfl · 22/01/2024 01:50

Im in Belfast and I can't sleep it's so loud. Also worried about our trees. Cat is going mad

Igneococcus · 22/01/2024 01:54

West coast Scotland, Argyll&Bute, it is terrifying, My house has no protection when the storm comes from the West. It is shaking in the wind.
Also, I caught ds' bug that kept him off school all last week, I;m sitting here with a bowl, I'm feeling really nauseous.

Igneococcus · 22/01/2024 01:56

I've just seen the windspeeds are predicted to be even higher for us on Tuesday.

pollyglot · 22/01/2024 02:31

Here, it's well over 30 deg and so humid that sweat is pouring off me. I just can't move for the weight of the atmosphere. We had a massive storm this time last year, with roads and hillsides washed away, the destruction of millions of dollars' worth of fruit crops, numerous deaths. I don't ever remember such erratic and extreme weather in all my 74 years.

NovemberAutumn · 22/01/2024 02:31

Hand hold here. I am in about as far south in England as you can get and it's scary awful here so i cannot imagine what everyone else is going through.

Thanks to everyone

Calmdown14 · 22/01/2024 02:34

N-E Scotland. This feels as bad as Arwen.
I can't sleep through it. So unbelievably loud.

50mph wind is common place here but these gusts are way more than that.

Trees in back still standing.... for now but like you @Ishaloadacrap I feel really unsettled and anxious.

Slimoe · 22/01/2024 03:01

Up in north Scotland, in the red. Things have definitely happened to the roof, can hear lots of tile noises, will have to wait until the morning to see the damage.

thebestinterest · 22/01/2024 03:08

OP, what your DH has done is is always, always such a bad idea!!! He should be inside during storms 😭

Every Year people die where I live because they just CANT STAY PUT during storms and think they have somewhere better to be, like clearing brushX whilst there’s a storm!

Last storm killed 3 men in my area: one was moving fallen branches with a tractor when a limb fell on the driver; another climbed on his roof to remove a small branch that had fallen when a bigger branch snapped and killed him; and the other was stuck when a tree split in two and fell while the third guy went after a stray trash bin 😭😭😭

ChedderGorgeous · 22/01/2024 03:25

Am booked to go power kite flying tomorrow. Organisers haven't emailed to say its off.... I'm assuming I just turn up still. South of England.

Igneococcus · 22/01/2024 03:30

Still howling but there was a lovely reflection of the moonlight on the sea but the moon has now disappeared behind clouds again,

Lizzieregina · 22/01/2024 03:51

I hope things have calmed down for you all. Your descriptions gave me anxiety!

I’ve been hearing from my family over there and most of them had lost power and were saying it’s some of the worst wind they’ve ever experienced.

Stay safe!

Deathbyathousandcats · 22/01/2024 03:53

Things seem to have calmed down a lot here in Warwickshire.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 22/01/2024 03:56

Calmed down a lot here too.

Before I fell asleep at 12 I heard a loud bang and I have just looked out my window and a tree has fell down right outside my window.

This is a new build and we have only just moved in.

Could have been so much worse. Thank god it's our room at the front and DDs room is at the back! Phew 😥

I hear you. I wasn’t happy. They cleared a blockage on one of the main roads into town which allowed emergency services through. But yeah. A big risk. He’s home safe and sound and snoring now.

I hope everybody elsewhere is ok.

If it makes you feel any better, it is beautifully sunny where I am. Two days ago we were sheltering under doorways while an earthquake shook the house. The slow ones are always awful - they start building and you are never quite sure how hard they are going to get. Our children learn very early to aim for a doorway or, ideally, under a sturdy table.

Autumn1990 · 22/01/2024 04:45

Currently laying awake whilst the wind batters the house in Yorkshire. We’ve only just fixed the damage from the last extreme wind which didn’t get a name.
I want dawn to come so it’s over but I’m worried about what I’ll find outside

Deathbyathousandcats · 22/01/2024 04:49

Just been up the garden with a torch (couldn’t sleep). The worst part of the storm came through at half past midnight. There’s a loose fence panel but nothing that a couple of nails won’t fix.
I thought the damage here would be a lot worse.

Aurora93 · 22/01/2024 04:51

I’m in Scotland and it’s really bad here too. We were driving to pick the kids up tonight and you could feel the car move with the wind, the roads were covered with fallen trees so we had to change direction about 4 times.
A few trees in our street have fallen and a car has been damaged. Bins, sheds etc are getting blown about. Our wooden fence has also been ripped up and blown into the garden. Our lights in the house are flickering so I’m worried about a power cut.

It is worrying, hope you’re ok, OP.

Having spent some time in both hurricane and tornado areas, if it gets really bad, go downstairs, ideally in a room close to the center of the house (e.g. a space under the stairs) but, even without that level of caution, the ground floor.

Also, I know this sounds mad, but most serious injuries that happen in these storms are blunt force trauma to the head. If you're going outside to let the dog out, or if you have a lot of trees about and can't go downstairs (e.g. you live in a bungalow), then put on a bicycle helmet. It will feel daft but it's the best thing you can do in really violent storms.

I agree with this after taking the dog out tonight and getting whacked across the head by a (relatively) large tree branch! No serious trauma but a big lump and a small cut on the head!
