For anybody else who is literally in the eye of the storm. Am in Northern Ireland and it’s horrendous. I am normally a very calm, rational person but the sheer force of this storm is making me sick with anxiety. Power is out, our road is blocked by fallen trees and my friends roof has been partially ripped off her house.

I'm in Belfast and have never heard wind like it. My neighbours roof tiles are rattling, I'm really hoping they last the night. Our electric's still on thankfully

Oceanrudeness · 21/01/2024 23:57

We're in Birmingham, there was a massive gust of wind when I was putting son to bed. Came up an hour ago to go to bed myself and there's water coming through his ceiling. Must've dislodged some tiles 😬

User345939 · 22/01/2024 00:00

Also in N.I. Feeling really scared tonight. Will be glad of daylight and hopefully some calm! Really wasn't expecting it to be this bad!

TUGGY2006 · 22/01/2024 00:02

I'm in the West too OP Galway and it's just starting to calm down now the wind earlier was horrific. I'm normally pretty rational too but I'm freaked out by this storm it's the worst I've ever encountered. Stay safe everyone.

StBrides · 22/01/2024 00:02

How strong are the winds? I didn't think the storm was that heavy, weather reports aren't showing winds higher than the 50smph...Sounds like they got it wrong!

Stay safe everyone 🙏

BBC news summary has recorded winds of 75-90mph in the worst affected areas.

I'm in the Irish sea area, it's still wild outside but calming down Op

Christmasisalmosthere · 22/01/2024 00:16

Also in NI and it's the worst storm I've ever experienced. We've a lot of mature trees and hedges and have spent thousands in recent years getting them cut back but I'm still anxious about a few of them.
Electric is still on and I'm really grateful for that as i'd imagine the repairs are going to take a long time.

As soon as I can get a tree surgeon booked I’m taking these mature trees down. Terrified of them coming down!

I am central Scotland and I've never witnessed anything like it. I'm fully waiting for my window caving in. All roads I use for school have trees in them so I'm keeping my daughter off I don't care what the school say. I always sleep with the window on the latch but I can't tonight obviously lol so am bloody roasting 😂

jf1992x · 22/01/2024 00:19

Mammals are supposed to be fearful of adverse weather (i.e go and hide!!). You're having a completely rational response. Big deep breaths OP. It always feels worse at night and it'll be morning before you know it. Stay safe x

Same - well western central, it's ramped up significantly in the past half hour. Actually scary .

Ishaloadacrap · 22/01/2024 00:23

Thank you all for the hand holding and company. I think things are definitely calming and I hope that this horrible storm is losing power as it moves on. Am going to try taking the dogs out for a quick wee! DH is heading home soon-people have been amazing trying to get roads passable. For everything that is crap in the world, at times like this, humanity comes up trumps. I hope everybody stays safe and bollocks to you Isha!

@Ishaloadacrap I'm sorry you're feeling so on edge.

im SE England, there have been a few 'tree down' reports in my village. I start work at 6:45. It's going to be interesting working around fallen trees to get there.

its very windy here, but I live in a wind tunnel and it sounds much the same as a normal windy night.

Theres a car alarm going off. Just been turned off.

stay safe everyone

Moo31 · 22/01/2024 00:24

I'm exactly the same OP. We're NI too (east) and it's very very scary. I'm normally cool and calm but not tonight. Feeling very on edge. Not helped by having to travel to the west for work tomorrow - the storm should be over but reading of road closures etc so it will be eventful!

Fernticket · 22/01/2024 00:27

Hand hold for you OP. I'm in the West of England and it's scaring me too. Don't think any of us are going to sleep too well, but as PPs have said, everything is worse at night and the morning will soon be here. Stay safe everyone xx

Goneback2school · 22/01/2024 00:30

Hope it passes off soon. I'm in the SE of Ireland and our neighbours roof came off earlier. Debris going everywhere, they had to put down insulation to protect our flat roof/ skylight. My parents who live just around the corners electricity is gone but ours is fine.

Trufflenose · 22/01/2024 00:31

I'm trying to get to sleep on the sofa as it's less noisy down here and I don't get the wind and rain smashing against the window. Doubt I'm going to sleep though.

grievingandhurt · 22/01/2024 00:31

@Ishaloadacrap we're mid-Ulster area and it's been really scary. Trees down everywhere and electrical fires (thankfully not too close to us). This is the worst storm I remember in about 25 years. Hoping it passes over and blows itself out soon

Stressedmummyof4 · 22/01/2024 00:33

We're just on the outskirts of Glasgow and it's terrible. Our trampoline is tied down and I can't settle for watching it at the window I'm ill. I honestly hadn't taken on quite how bad it was to get. It sounds like our windows are ready to come in at any moment. Someone's recycling bin has gone over so apart from the wind there's cans rattling about too. Numerous trees down on most roads out of our village. I don't know why but the wind always seems so much scarier at nighttime! Hope everyone is safe xx

Nancydrawn · 22/01/2024 00:37

Having spent some time in both hurricane and tornado areas, if it gets really bad, go downstairs, ideally in a room close to the center of the house (e.g. a space under the stairs) but, even without that level of caution, the ground floor.

Also, I know this sounds mad, but most serious injuries that happen in these storms are blunt force trauma to the head. If you're going outside to let the dog out, or if you have a lot of trees about and can't go downstairs (e.g. you live in a bungalow), then put on a bicycle helmet. It will feel daft but it's the best thing you can do in really violent storms.

Ohdojustfuckoff · 22/01/2024 00:53

We're so far away from you, but there's an absolute battering going on outside, has been for hours and hours. One of the neighbours has lost their fence.

I asked DD if she wanted to sleep downstairs tonight because the wind sounds horrific on her floor of the house.

I'm just listening to it now, can hear quite a lot flying around.

Hope you and your family are all safe OP

maldivemoment · 22/01/2024 01:02

West coast of Scotland. Bloody horrific! Neighbour just messaged to say the roof had blown off our rabbit enclosure. Rabbits securely locked in the smaller hutch in case of this eventually. Went out to survey the damage. It’s like Armageddon! Trees down, etc. (rabbits clearly didn’t get the memo as they’re acting like nothing happened!)

However, I reckon it’s now calming down a teeny bit. Other folk are right, we’re coming out the other side of it now. In a few hours the sun will be rising. We’ve got this,,,

Willyoujustbequiet · 22/01/2024 01:04

I'm in the borders and it's awful. Scared something will crash into the house. Power is off too.

BelfastSmile · 22/01/2024 01:05

Feels a bit calmer in Belfast now - still some big gusts, but feels like they're further apart and not quite as strong. Hope you're ok, OP!
