What is so engaging about Trump?

The thought of him getting in as president again worries me.

But I will admit on here anonymously. I am very interested when he's speaking and like to know what he has to say even though I disagree with loads

It's like he has a certain hold that gets my attention. I want to see where he will go next etc

But again, know he is a terrible choice to be running America.

What is it about him people like and want to vote for? Is it subconscious, is something he's doing speaking to people on a very social/psychological level?

Trump is 77 years old - not exactly a spring chicken either.

CountFucula · 22/01/2024 07:04

Making a man who tried to overthrow an election president again will mark the end of democracy.
If he insists that you can’t trust elections then what. He becomes an unelected leader. A dictator.
It’ll be bad news for the planet, for women and for minorities. All because the poorly educated don’t feel ‘listened to’.

MaybeTooLate · 22/01/2024 07:41

He’s a populist. He tells people that the solutions to their problems are easy and obvious and that anyone saying otherwise is dishonest and corrupt.

He lies when expedient.

He understands how disconnected large numbers of Americans feel from the traditional establishment (the Christian right in particular) and uses that to his advantage (look how support goes up every time he’s subject to legal action).

Joe Biden is hopeless and shouldn’t be running.

he’s the only head of state in history to leave poorer than he went in as president. The amount of effort the media is putting into demonising him should be indicative really. Yes he has said mean things online and he might not be the most politically correct figure but in terms of getting stuff done. The economy was doing much better under trump inflation was under control. Trumps foreign policy even the dems have to admit was excellent. He started no foreign wars and the Abraham accords also. Not to mention he doesn’t smoke drink or do drugs his children have all grown up to be functioning members of society.

I'd just point out about the racist thing:

In the election against Biden, he actually increased the number of black and Hispanic voters who voted for him. He has a particular following among younger black men, and there is absolutly a black conservative movement and it's been growing, though not all are big Trump fans.

There are a lot of Hispanic people along the border who are very much pro the idea of much stronger border controls. Lots of immigrants and first generation Americans are not happy with how the Democrats are treating illegal immigration. Even many people in Mexico are supportive of this.

The idea that any concern with illegal immigration is seen as racist by non-white Americans is just untrue, these demographics tend to be rather conservative.

African Americans haven't been taken in. Only 12% voted for Trump. 36% of Hispanic people and similar for Asian people.

The richer the person the more likely they were to vote Trump.

HRTQueen · 22/01/2024 08:21

That was the last the election this election will be different as the immigration particularly from South America will be priority during the campaign for both sides

people often vote to protect what they feel is theirs or to protect their way of life

it’s more comfortable to think that Trump voters are all nasty racists or deplorables Hilary Clinton made this mistake

Which is more than have voted for Republican presidents since the 60s. It's about the trend, he may or may not be a personal racist, but he managed to increase the number of non-white people voting for him the second time around. How do you square that with it being racists who vote for him?

That's not necessarily all about Trump. The Hispanic vote looks like it may be a new, regular Republican voting block. So far the black vote isn't there, but it is becoming less tied to the Democrats, and significantly the people moving to the right are younger rather than older black voters. Not all Republicans like Trump, but even if they don't, they may feel he is a better option than anything the Democrats are putting forward. Both of these groups, when you poll their views, come out more conservative than white middle class Americans.

Biden, Obama & both Bushes all loved their country. I can't think of many American politicians that don't seem like that. Nikki Haley, too.

Trump is deeply un-American, deeply not what I thought Americans were like.
We're optimists. We "can do." We want to organise everyone into a mutually beneficial solution We believe that hard work pays off. We admire and aspire to success rather than resent the successful and blame some nefarious force for differences in wealth between us & then.

Trump never represents any of that.

I can only think that Trumpania reflects the dominance of anger in all things political. That this is the Anger-Ascendency era, when angry resentful people win the political arguments (= the angriest person wins).

passiveaggressivenonsense · 04/02/2024 14:15

He makes it legitimate to be a racist, immoral, misogynist and people who share those views like that.

But yet he's a much better choice than Biden

Why?

noctiscaelum · 04/02/2024 14:21

Everything that comes out from his mouth is either lies, projection or nonsense. He's becoming incoherent day by day.
There's nothing interesting about what he says.

Do not underestimate the immigration issues. This is key for elections this year. We will have KS as our own Biden is he goes about the same way about tackling immigration. Within a cost of living crisis era people are voting more than ever for their own interests. Biden has made a mess of the borders and people want Trump to sort it. There has been violent crime from recently arrived gangs. A police killed in Chicago and two police man attacked in Times Square, NY. The NY DA let them out free without bail. It is just a mess and citizens are not happy with the shitshow

Fabulousfeb · 04/02/2024 14:39

It's interesting from the point if view of the power of speech.

How he speaks is engaging it lilts up and down like a preacher. The USA loves preachers.
I've seen in rl many times people with nothing to say but say it well... Get listened too and sound serious.

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/02/2024 14:40

Absolutely fuck all. His supporters are deluded.

SirChenjins · 04/02/2024 14:42

He appeals to the very worst in society whose views are no longer appropriate in the 21st century - he gives them an outlet and allows them to be nostalgic for the days when black people were slaves in the field, when you could take the land you wanted and you could rape your wife without fear of persecution.

He says nothing I want to hear and I switch off the TV or radio whenever I hear him.

Happyher · 04/02/2024 14:54

When he speaks I’m just bewildered at how demented and vile he is, and that people still want to vote for him.

LWSnow · 04/02/2024 14:56

He tells his supporters that he loves them.

That political choice has come to this. I seriously think I’ve somehow slipped into a parallel universe when I watch the news.

I know people have tried to explain but I still don't understand how someone so absolutely dreadful is so popular

When he stood the last time I thought it was a joke. Not so funny now

blooddroprubies · 04/02/2024 15:09

The gift of the gab. His dad was a salesman so it makes sense, it's the blood.

RedStripeypillow · 04/02/2024 15:12

For me it's like car crash TV. It's horrendous but you are compelled to watch.

newnamethanks · 04/02/2024 15:19

I have no idea. The sound of his voice turns my stomach and the content of his speech, doubly so. Repellent reptile person.
