What is so engaging about Trump?

beitasmalltown · 21/01/2024 21:10

The thought of him getting in as president again worries me.

But I will admit on here anonymously. I am very interested when he's speaking and like to know what he has to say even though I disagree with loads

It's like he has a certain hold that gets my attention. I want to see where he will go next etc

But again, know he is a terrible choice to be running America.

What is it about him people like and want to vote for? Is it subconscious, is something he's doing speaking to people on a very social/psychological level?

OP posts:
warmheartcoldfeet · 22/01/2024 00:57

I always watch him too, but in a kind of dumbfounded way.

Everything that comes out of his mouth is utter tripe. It's like being hypnotised by stupidity. It's a strange phenomena.

I can see how that would work the first time (people thought the same about BJ and Farage), but when he is going for a second term having completely failed to deliver anything the first time around, I’m surprised the same old schtick is still working.

Farage’s schtick is also working the second time around.

There are a lot of people who (still!) feel no one is listening. Politicians who seem ‘not like politicians’ suck up these votes.

HRTQueen · 22/01/2024 01:15

Sofabum · 21/01/2024 21:29

He doesn't speak in riddles like a politician and doesn't speak like he's wrapped up with ivy League pomposity. I don't like the man but I can imagine if you're an 'average Joe' he cuts through the bullshit.

Yes I agree

he is on the most basic level connecting to people that have felt ignored and left behind. he tells them I am listening to you also tapping into opinions that many politicians want to ignore or prefer not to tackle

Nigel Farage uses the same tactics

it’s proven very successful just look at populism in Europe

why do many of us like to watch him because on some level he is so ridiculous he is amusing and we want to understand why he he is popular as it’s baffling

But people don't think he's failed to deliver.

In watching "man on the street" kinds of interviews where they asked people why they voted for him, or especially why they voted for him the second time when they hadn't the first, the overwhelming answer seems to be that they were better off economically - they had a job and could pay the bills. And I would say, though this is more of an interpretation on my part, that the "job" part of that is almost more important than the bills part. They want a good job, not some kind of income supplements.

The second reasons seem to be they see him as attempting to protect against stuff the Democrats want to do that they think is awful. And it's not necessarily about being 100% successful, so much as trying to do it at all. So stuff like men in women's sports, defunding the police, some of the more crazy DEI or race preferencing things. There are a lot of people who think the Dems social policies are pretty batshit.

Meadowfinch · 22/01/2024 02:42

Nothing at all. He's an ignorant, over-coiffured, fake-tanned embarrassment.

His arrogance and dishonesty are nauseating.

aurynne · 22/01/2024 03:30

We are witnessing the destruction of a democracy that once prided itself in getting the best minds, and the most ingenuous and progressive, for the improvement of human kind.

The US was never perfect, but it was inspirational. Not anymore. I am scared shitless of what will happen after next year. And I don't even live anywhere near the US.

They are going to re-elect a madman, who also happens to be indifferent to human suffering, and give him control of one of the most powerful countriues in the world, with the strongest military. His second term will be much worse than the first as he will feel vindicated. I cannot imagine anything worse.

We are witnessing a massive disaster unfolding.

Aintnosupermum · 22/01/2024 03:59

You are watching a train crash. It’s hard to not look.

The democrats scored an own goal going after him on fraud charges. It’s created lots of support because people are fed up of being hounded by the authorities.

I know for myself, I’m shocked at what has gone on in court. It’s a private transaction between two private parties. All the money has been repaid. If Deutsche Bank were happy with the risk of lending to Trump, that’s on them. The bank will have carefully looked at the valuations and adjusted them internally if they thought they were inflated. To prosecute for false valuations for loans is a huge massive stretch. A valuation isn’t an exact science.

Biden isn’t great and I do wish the two old men would both retire. I’m ready for President Haley. Would like to see Chris Christie as her VP but that’s never going to happen.

cerisepanther73 · 22/01/2024 04:24

He is marvick he is like one of those types of people who has a compelling puzzling charm facade,
and he has the ability cause he was outsider in politics and gives the persno of success business wise he appeals to America 🇺🇸 Capitalism ethos

ironically from immigration status background his family are Scottish,
so he even though paradoxically famously openly does not like immigration on his watch likes to control or stop it if he is in power,
despite benefiting from this enormously personally and his family,
he explenfies how living taking advantage of the American dream of bettering oneself and social mobility being able climb up the social hierarchy status ladder,

Lizzieregina · 22/01/2024 04:28

To say he’s a clown is an insult to clowns everywhere.

There are over 2 million registered voters in Iowa, and 56,000 voted for Trump last week. Hardly a great turnout. Hopefully New Hampshire will be better for Haley.

While people complain about Biden, he has delivered in a big way for ordinary people. The US economy was on the brink when he took office and he has staved it off. Employment is good, the stock market reached record levels last week. Inflation is coming down (and this was driven by the war in Ukraine and pandemic supply issues, so not his fault). He has fought for control of insulin prices for seniors, and aims to do it for everyone dependent on insulin. He got an infrastructure bill, the chips act to bring chip manufacturing back to the US. There’s a bipartisan bill on the floor of the Senate for the border, but Republicans are fighting it. And more.

He’s old but he knows how to govern and get legislation passed. I’m sure he’s using advisors and people who know what they’re doing to accomplish this, unlike Trump who surrounded himself with yes men, and then when they were no longer yes men, he fired them.

Trump added almost $8 trillion to the deficit. He declared bankruptcy 6 times in his private dealings, so hardly a good businessman.

If he’s re-elected, his only interests will be making sure he can pardon himself for any convictions and seeking revenge on anyone who has crossed him. What he most certainly will not do is anything that will benefit regular working people, and his administration will be especially bad for women.

DC1888 · 22/01/2024 04:51

As a poster above stated, its car crash TV, which makes for compelling viewing. That's only his appeal to us though. He'd never get elected here.

Hes a shyster, a complete chancer (bluffer/con man/specialist in BS), and could only ever be elected with an enormous gullible/backward electorate, most of whom (43% of the population, the vast majority being right wing) think the Earth is 6000 years old and that man lived alongside dinosaurs (don't tell them he's an atheist). The disparity between rich and poor is greater in america than any other nation, with the top 1% earning more than the entire middle class, and the lowest 50%, ie. half the population, owning 2.6% of the wealth)...blacks meanwhile owned less than 1.5% of all wealth.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2019/06/19/why-racial-wealth-gap-persists-more-than-years-after-emancipation/

america is a cult (televangelists, mega churches, religion being everyone's business (a prerequisite of being elected means declaring your faith) children saying pledge of allegiance at school every morning, commemirating a persecuting cult (puritans) getting fed by the people whom were dehumanised and ethnically cleansed (Natives) every November with "thanksgiving"), and in a cult you will get masses of easily led people. A shyster in the form of Trump thrives in such an environment ("the election was stolen, storm the government building")..he plays them like a fiddle.

Arealnumber · 22/01/2024 05:00

TempestTost · 22/01/2024 00:45

I find the way he speaks very off putting, but then, that is subjective.

As for what people in the US like about him, one is that he talks about stuff no other leader in the US has for years. Thngs like rebuilding the manufacturing sector. It's well worth watching Michael Moore's speech predicting Trump would win before his first presidency, when many still thought that was never going to happen.

I also read a very interesting article just after Trump's win, written but a young Hispanic academic. Her parents were born in Mexico, lived in a border state, Catholics and very active in the union movement, very active in a lot of leftist organizations. They voted for Trump, and her article was about why that was - they had previously voted for Obama - and had been deeply disappointed by what they considered his betrayal of the working classes. Their attitude was, well, maybe Trump won't deliver, but at least he is talking about the things that we care about, so we'll try and see.

Also worth considering that a good number of Trump voters actually had Bernie Sanders as their first choice.

But really, I think if you want to see where people are coming from in the US, let yourself go down a bit of a Youtube hole and check out some of the material there by supporters, or by people who are not so much Trump supporters but anti-Biden or are upset with the Democrats. It gives a sense of what people are responding to about him.

I find this the most interesting comment here - along with the others by TempestTost. I was probably much like the rest of you at previous elections, baffled, angered & looking down upon his voters. Left wing ideologues are blinded by their narrow mindedness to be able to answer OP's question, resorting to hurling insults. Biden is incapable of public speaking - he's just a frontman puppet so many will be driven over to Trump by that stain on the pride of American culture I would have thought. Moreover, due to Biden & the Dems being entirely enraptured by gender ideology they are even worse for women than the Republicans. For this reason alone a huge proportion of economically left leaning women will no longer vote for them, same as with Labour here.

Inspirational?

The most racist nation in human history, one "founded" on the dehumanisation of a Native PEOPLE (not "savages" as the settler colonial document the declaration of "independence" (the irony) states), who were then ethnically cleansed (removed from their lands), massacred, with the surviving remainder of MEN, WOMEN and CHILDREN (not "savages"), put in reservations (cages)... in fact let's quote Hitler from 1928, who glowingly said...white settlers in america had “gunned down the millions of redskins to a few hundred thousand, and now keep the modest remnant under observation in a cage".

Inspirational yeah, to the absolute worst in humanity. thomas jefferson, the father of scientic racism, the "monster of Monticello" (that's his slave plantation"), is possibly the worst individual to ever walk the earth in regard to terrorising people based on race.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jul/05/facebook-declaration-of-independence-hate-speech

And america only became a democracy in the 1960s. A white men of property only vote is its foundation, as is white only citizenship (only whites are americans per the 1790 Naturlization Act).. it is the global leader is race law.

He tells thick impoverished ans violent men that they’re superior to everyone else especially women and non-whites and that sexual violence against women is fun. It’s a very appealing message to a certain kind of man.

And yet some people on this very thread are stupidly bleating be wants the best for America and for Americans.

Nah, he only cares about elevating a certain type of American. The ones who are upset at the idea of their privilege drifting away.

I also feel he is empowering to certain types of white man in particular, but not limited to - unsuccessful & mediocre white men. The reason being they see a man like trump who is clearly unfit to be a political leader, foul mouthed, misogynistic and abusive, chaotic relationship history etc become President and think “Yeah that could be us” or “yeah we can do anything”

They don’t want fair, they don’t want equality they don’t want a meritocracy, they don’t want the rules on decency to apply to them - they want to go back to a time where being a white man give you a significant leg up.

The thing is it already does, but they want to stamp down on it and reinforce that privilege even more.

SunflowerSeeds123 · 22/01/2024 05:28

Biden and Trump are both old men who barely can string a sentence together between them. Both are being heavily managed by a backroom of people. It's a farce.

Worldwide, populism has ruined politics. It's a total bonfire for voters, because the choices are bloody awful.

Shoppingfiend · 22/01/2024 05:37

Well populism surely means popular with voters -like Putin!
There’s a reason for it - people’s quality of life is decreasing.
immigration is increasing, he’s going to build a wall.
If he reduces funding for Ukraine it is worrying what will happen. Putin will be on a roll. Might he take over other countries. Will Europe be at war?
it’s scary

What I can't understand is how the 'average Joes' think a man with his millions is going to be on their side, let alone understand their problems. As for not speaking in riddles, it's actually hard to work out what he is trying to say half the time.

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 22/01/2024 05:43

NoCloudsAllowed · 21/01/2024 22:29

He's not in politics for the good of the country, ffs. He's in it because he was highly indebted and saw it as a way of making his way through. And dodging legal trials. And he's fucking grandiose and thinks he just deserves it.

He's a chauvinist. Doesn't believe in logic and diversity, believes in throwing your weight around and trying to dominate others.

I don't love Joe Biden but he's a million times better than Trump. I actually fear world war 3 if he gets in. He'd stop funding Ukrainian resistance, Chinese might decide to take Taiwan, all kinds of shit. Zero action on climate change. It's incredibly dangerous and depressing.

The fact he's even in consideration for it makes me doubt humanity, tbh. He tried to overthrow an election and storm the government buildings. He should be in jail.

Exactly. What other country would even contemplate wanting a leader who has done what he has? I find it completely baffling.

He says what the people want to hear - so what? It's actions that matter, not words.

DC1888 · 22/01/2024 05:54

For america to stop being racist it would need to stop being america.

It is a racist entity, that's its DNA, the very basis of its existence. Natives are subhuman ("savages") as it states in the "founding" white settler colonial document, its constitution deemed blacks 3/5ths of whites and had the Fugitive Slave Clause (signed into law by george washington, which allowed him (and all the other tyrants) who owned human beings to recover their escaped slaves, often doing do by placing runaway slave adverts in newspapers)...meanwhile lets hear more from the founder of scientific racism thomas (owner of over 600 black PEOPLE (not "property" as they are designated in the articles of confederation) jefferson (who although against race mixing (another american race concept with anti-miscegenation law (no interracial marraige) which only ended in 1967) raped at least one of his slaves), writing in 1785...

Blacks were "inferior to the whites in the endowments of body and mind."

And followed up with...."The improvement of the blacks in body and mind, in the first instance of their mixture with the whites, has been observed by every one, and proves that their inferiority is not the effect merely of their condition of life".

https://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/01/opinion/the-real-thomas-jefferson.html?pagewanted=all

It was hilarious when the ignoramous that is Biden called Trump the "first racist president". Trump is a shyster who is elevated by the backward masses, but a monster like jefferson he ain't.

Noicant · 22/01/2024 06:04

I don’t get it personally, he’s clearly quite stupid tbh. I tried to really understand and I think it may be because the Democrats seem helpless in the face of what people are concerned about. Illegal migration in the USA is truly astounding, theres a genuine drug crisis and efforts to decriminalise have often backfired, a decent chunk of Americans are genuinely quite religious (I think it’s and something many western europeans struggle with) so things like banning abortions feels important to them.

Fuck knows but America basically has a choice between a clown and someone with senility.

Version · 22/01/2024 06:04

The braind-dead like to flock with their own kind so they can try to convince themselves that they are normal or even intelligent. Hence the same group being particularly prone to getting sucked into conspiracy theories: they like to believe they know something other people don't because it makes them feel special given it has been such a rare experience for them in reality.

Expect a lot of posts like this from now on. I find it pathetic that the only defense that the Democrats have is that they are scare of Trump. Michelle Obama can’t sleep and Kamala Harris is horrified. Still the same insults to Trump supporters as thick and uneducated. May be start listening to people’s concerns. Respect other people’s views and opinions. Try to unify the country.

Many people have had quite enough of the pretence that all opinions - no matter how ill-informed and devoid of logic, rationality, consistency with primary school level knowledge, internal coherence or supporting evidence - are of equal value.

PermanentTemporary · 22/01/2024 06:32

I'm allergic to just about everything he says and it's astounding to me that 75 million people voted for him in 2020. But having watched similar here, in Argentina, in Hungary, in Israel, it shouldn't really be surprising. Well-off people afraid they might lose more, mostly. Tbh as I have got older and richer myself I have sometimes recognised those feelings in myself. They're not feelings to encourage though.

I think Biden seems to have done a decent job but I can see an 82 year old doesn't exactly feel like a new dawn for anyone.
