What is so engaging about Trump?

The thought of him getting in as president again worries me.

But I will admit on here anonymously. I am very interested when he's speaking and like to know what he has to say even though I disagree with loads

It's like he has a certain hold that gets my attention. I want to see where he will go next etc

But again, know he is a terrible choice to be running America.

What is it about him people like and want to vote for? Is it subconscious, is something he's doing speaking to people on a very social/psychological level?

@Elvanseshortage no he's not a politician he's a businessman. He came into politics late in life unlike your traditional politician who has usually entered the world of politics a lot earlier. A quick google search shows him as the 45th president and the only one that has no political or military service so I think that counts as he's not a politician.

I do find him straight talking, this is why people either love him or hate him. Personally some things I agree with him on, some things I don't but it doesn't really matter as I'm not American. He does have a huge following though and the election will be interesting.

passiveaggressivenonsense · 21/01/2024 22:29

The fact that it could be him or Biden running America sums up perfectly why Humanity is a failed species hastening in its own extinction.

NoCloudsAllowed · 21/01/2024 22:29

He's not in politics for the good of the country, ffs. He's in it because he was highly indebted and saw it as a way of making his way through. And dodging legal trials. And he's fucking grandiose and thinks he just deserves it.

He's a chauvinist. Doesn't believe in logic and diversity, believes in throwing your weight around and trying to dominate others.

I don't love Joe Biden but he's a million times better than Trump. I actually fear world war 3 if he gets in. He'd stop funding Ukrainian resistance, Chinese might decide to take Taiwan, all kinds of shit. Zero action on climate change. It's incredibly dangerous and depressing.

The fact he's even in consideration for it makes me doubt humanity, tbh. He tried to overthrow an election and storm the government buildings. He should be in jail.

I dislike him personally, but he's really tapped into what the 'common man' thinks and feels on certain issues. The democrats dismiss and belittle 'small minded' republicans, but they underestimate the power they have when they vote with their feet. They feel seen and heard by Trump, and who doesn't want to be seen and heard?

dreamingbohemian · 21/01/2024 22:38

He's a fucking racist, a rapist and the most corrupt president in history

He's a horrible fucking person who appeals to other horrible people

Anyone who finds him 'engaging' is deeply deluded

Bululu · 21/01/2024 22:39

Expect a lot of posts like this from now on. I find it pathetic that the only defense that the Democrats have is that they are scare of Trump. Michelle Obama can’t sleep and Kamala Harris is horrified. Still the same insults to Trump supporters as thick and uneducated. May be start listening to people’s concerns. Respect other people’s views and opinions. Try to unify the country.

Nothing.

As my friend describes him, he is a racist misogynistic orange spangletwat.

Most of us aren't even American, we're just outside observers and we can see how bad he is.

Pinkplans · 21/01/2024 22:53

He doesn’t respect women or non-whites and a lot of closet, similarly minded people like that.

BatteryPowerGnat · 21/01/2024 23:48

He's running for president so if he gets elected he can try to pardon himself for the numerous crimes he's been/likely to be convicted of.

I'm not a democrat

I'm scared he gets elected.

I think Trump will win again sadly and god knows what will happen then in the world.. it really worries me. It’s like he’s a cult leader and I think his supporters genuinely think he wants to make life better for them, but really, of course he couldn’t care less. Its the power he loves as he’s an (orange) narcissist. His supporters think the criminal charges are a witchhunt.

i’d love to see Michelle obama stand

ElevenSeven · 22/01/2024 00:14

He has charisma and cuts through to normal people.

And Biden has been awful so he’s gifted it back to Trump on a plate.

Saschka · 22/01/2024 00:16

ComtesseDeSpair · 21/01/2024 21:17

For his many faults, he’s clearly proud of the best things about the US, of being American, and wants the country to be great. I think he appeals to many ordinary people who feel the same way and feel alienated by the old establishment politicians who don’t really seem to stand for very much and are wrapped up in “politics.” Trump’s stance is actually surprisingly rare in politics - in both the US and the U.K: I can’t think of very many politicians who genuinely appear to be in politics for love of their country and a desire to make it a great place to live for its people and are vocal about it.

Edited

Do you think so? His first term of office seemed to be all about how much money he could make out of his new connections, and how many of his family and cronies he could install into positions of power.

I didn’t see much benefit for ordinary Americans, but perhaps that’s because Mexico never built that wall.

IHS · 22/01/2024 00:20

Ron DeSantis has just dropped out of the race.

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 22/01/2024 00:26

We Were talking about this at work the other day and apparently he says what the working man wants to hear. I was really surprised how openly racist the conversation became. He emboldens people to say the things they think but aren’t allowed to say.

mollyfolk · 22/01/2024 00:37

because the system isn’t working for many in the US and they see him as anti establishment, anti the system. Someone who shakes things up and doesn’t play by the rules. He speaks in plain English using simple phrasing that is very different to other politicians. He’s happy to create further divisions to gain popularity rather than unite the country. To me he seems like a Buffoon but he’s been quite clever really, he tells people what they want to hear. He has no sense of values or ethics so he’s happy to say whatever it takes to get into power.

Tulipsandpansies123 · 22/01/2024 00:39

GrumpyPanda · 21/01/2024 21:24

He's unable to string two coherent sentences together, which is why the media rarely show ten straight minutes of him in a row but only garbled soundbites. But I guess some people are in it for the entertainment value.

Patriotism my ass. Trump is a malignant narcissist and only cares about Trump, including making money off the secret service. But he's an entertainer and gives people what they want- in this case the Christo-nationalists.

Couldn't agree more

TempestTost · 22/01/2024 00:45

I find the way he speaks very off putting, but then, that is subjective.

As for what people in the US like about him, one is that he talks about stuff no other leader in the US has for years. Thngs like rebuilding the manufacturing sector. It's well worth watching Michael Moore's speech predicting Trump would win before his first presidency, when many still thought that was never going to happen.

I also read a very interesting article just after Trump's win, written but a young Hispanic academic. Her parents were born in Mexico, lived in a border state, Catholics and very active in the union movement, very active in a lot of leftist organizations. They voted for Trump, and her article was about why that was - they had previously voted for Obama - and had been deeply disappointed by what they considered his betrayal of the working classes. Their attitude was, well, maybe Trump won't deliver, but at least he is talking about the things that we care about, so we'll try and see.

Also worth considering that a good number of Trump voters actually had Bernie Sanders as their first choice.

But really, I think if you want to see where people are coming from in the US, let yourself go down a bit of a Youtube hole and check out some of the material there by supporters, or by people who are not so much Trump supporters but anti-Biden or are upset with the Democrats. It gives a sense of what people are responding to about him.

TempestTost · 22/01/2024 00:49

Elvanseshortage · 21/01/2024 22:10

@Hecate01
He’s not a politician?
He gives straight answers?

Neither of these statements are true. At all. On what planet is a president not a politician? His speech is garbled, evasive and unclear. Full of incredibly simplistic slogans. I can’t believe you really think he is straight talking.

Edited

He is in no way part of the GOP establishment. He's been a Democrat most of his life, and not in politics. He doesn't speak like a politician.

Americans have a very bad relationship now with their political establishment, and an outsider appeals to them.

TempestTost · 22/01/2024 00:55

I'd just point out about the racist thing:

In the election against Biden, he actually increased the number of black and Hispanic voters who voted for him. He has a particular following among younger black men, and there is absolutly a black conservative movement and it's been growing, though not all are big Trump fans.

There are a lot of Hispanic people along the border who are very much pro the idea of much stronger border controls. Lots of immigrants and first generation Americans are not happy with how the Democrats are treating illegal immigration. Even many people in Mexico are supportive of this.

The idea that any concern with illegal immigration is seen as racist by non-white Americans is just untrue, these demographics tend to be rather conservative.

wast542 · 21/01/2024 21:12

But yet he's a much better choice than Biden

Biden has done more for the US economy during his term than Trump did though.

I can see how that would work the first time (people thought the same about BJ and Farage), but when he is going for a second term having completely failed to deliver anything the first time around, I’m surprised the same old schtick is still working.
