interested to see where others would choose.
we have had an awful year and it’s not set to improve anytime soon.
we live in London and I honestly do love it but I need a break from it all.
so my plan is to pack the kids and dog up and rent a air bnb house for the 6 weeks summer holiday and stay there.
where would you choose ?

England? Or more general Britain?
Seems odd to rule out Wales, for eg.

DibbleDooDah · 21/01/2024 19:54

North Norfolk coast - specifically anywhere between Thornham and Wells.

Mimami · 21/01/2024 19:55

Cornwall of you can afford it or Devon or anywhere in the South West near the coast, or Lake District, Peak District. Why does it have to be England and not Wales or Scotland?

PaintedPottery · 21/01/2024 19:55

Northumberland - by the coast.

Lste23 · 21/01/2024 19:55

Devon and then onto Cornwall ! Loads to do and see ! I’d move there tomorrow if I didn’t need to go to London hospitals regularly !

GintyMcGinty · 21/01/2024 19:57

Lake District, Northumberland, Dorset coast, Devon or Cornwall would be my choices if you've ruled out Scotland and Wales.

Lovemybunnies · 21/01/2024 19:58

Dorset is lovely. Have a look at Lyme Regis.

RebelliousOwl · 21/01/2024 19:58

Two weeks in Wales, two weeks in the lakes or Yorkshire then two weeks in Scotland.

Or get a giant motorhome and do a tour of Britain. Sounds lush!

Mumtoaswiftie · 21/01/2024 19:58

Sorry - I wasn’t leaving wales and Scotland out for any reason other than we have been to wales and Scotland a lot as have friends there.

Coast or not? Northumberland is beautiful and wild and has amazing beaches. It also doesn't get too horribly busy - or it didn't pre-Covid - I haven't been since so maybe others can provide more recent info.

North Norfolk is lovely, but will be very busy over the school holidays and the roads are hell with that volume of traffic.

The Lake District too - so beautiful but oh so busy.

If you meant Britain, rather than England, look at the Gower Peninsula in Wales.

LWSnow · 21/01/2024 20:00

Liverpool, lots to do and close to the coast and Lake District

Ilovemyshed · 21/01/2024 20:04

Northumberland coast, Yorkshire or the Peak District. Otherwise Dorset and Devon.

MarshaMarshaMarshmellow · 21/01/2024 20:07

Somewhere north! Lake District, Northumberland, maybe Welsh borders.

Anywhere but Cornwall, Devon and the usual places.

SwedishEdith · 21/01/2024 20:07

Pembrokeshire, around St David's

KingscoteStaff · 21/01/2024 20:09

3 weeks in Thurlestone, 3 weeks in Bamburgh.

ThreeRingCircus · 21/01/2024 20:10

I would go to Northumberland or the Peak District.

HairyQueenofSnots · 21/01/2024 20:10

Scotland Grin

But failing that, Northumberland, for sure.

AgnesX · 21/01/2024 20:12

Bamburgh....around Northumberland...gives you access to so many lovely places in the north and borders.

crew2022 · 21/01/2024 20:13

Northumberland: Alnmouth, Craster, Bambrugh ...beautiful big beaches. Dog friendly. Lots to do around the area.

ClematisWren · 21/01/2024 20:19

Another vote for the Northumberland coast!

Heronwatcher · 21/01/2024 20:24

Very much depends on your scene!

Personally I’d rule quite a bit of Cornwall and Devon out at that time of year as it’s just too busy for me to find it relaxing.

I agree with North Norfolk but again I’d stay away from the real hotspots in terms of the house itself unless you can get somewhere backing on to a path. From experience the locals don’t use the coast road but tend to stay slightly inland and visit the beaches early to avoid the mad crowds. If you could be inland within 15 mins of wells/ holkham/ brancaster there are some lovely areas there.

Personally I would 100% go for Scotland though, you can’t beat it for peace, relaxation, stunning scenery and lack of people. For that long I’d probably choose one of the slightly bigger islands, like Harris/ Lewis or Arran. They also have shops and things like swimming pools etc which the smaller islands don’t. And far fewer midges most of the time! If you want mainland Scotland I’d consider somewhere along the coast between Montrose and Aberdeen, stunning scenery and beaches. And you could do a day trip to Edinburgh, or into the Mountains etc. And if you’re there for that long you’re bound to get some decent weather.

notenoughtogoround · 21/01/2024 20:32

Anglesey/Ynys Mon gorgeous beaches, lovely pubs, chilled pace of life, crafty type shops and, if you are on the south of the island close to great stuff for the kids on the mainland too like Llandudno (great pier!) , castles like Comwy and Penrhyn, Snowdon, Greenwood park. A day in Beaumaris, crabbing, boat ride to see puffins and seals and then a trip round the castle and a pub lunch - perfect!

BonjourCrisette · 21/01/2024 20:32

Why England? Because if I had the funds and time to do this, I'd go to rural France, probably the SW area. Much cheaper properties IME, and being in another country for all that time would be so interesting compared to being in the UK. I am sure there are areas in other European countries too where you could do this more cheaply than in the UK.

Happyholidays78 · 21/01/2024 20:32

Dartmoor/South Devon area. So many beautiful place's just a short drive away, beaches, quiet moorlands, rivers, tors to climb & beautiful villages to visit e.g Dartmouth/Salcombe although these towns can get busy in peak season we tend to get there early & after a 'busy day' spend the next day or two on Dartmoor.

OrigamiOwls · 21/01/2024 20:34

I'd go with Yorkshire.
