Where in England would you go for 6 weeks !

interested to see where others would choose.
we have had an awful year and it’s not set to improve anytime soon.
we live in London and I honestly do love it but I need a break from it all.
so my plan is to pack the kids and dog up and rent a air bnb house for the 6 weeks summer holiday and stay there.
where would you choose ?

Also depends on the ages of the children and what they like doing.

It does indeed.

I'd probably go for the Lakes or somewhere in Northumberland not too long a distance to Keilder water so there could be a mix of walking and watersports.

PandaG · 22/01/2024 17:03

Small children I'd say my sister's holiday let in N Norfolk - but as pp it is already booked out for the summer holidays - returning guests book for a month and rebook for the following year before they leave.

waltzingparrot · 22/01/2024 17:21

I thought Portsmouth too. Loads to do there, plus you can have day trips to the Isle of Wight, France, New Forest, plus half hour drive to Winchester, Chichester, Southampton - so many attractions around the south coast and free events in summer.

FayCarew · 22/01/2024 18:15

@ErrolTheDragon , I was thinking would they enjoy a visit to Alnwick Castle.
The Northumberland coast is beautiful, but the sea isn't warm.
Kielder has an observatory, which might be an eye-opener for city kids, and there are things like a birds of prey centre, watersports etc
Plenty of places to go for hikes and walks like the Cheviots.
They could visit Hadrian's Wall and Lindisfarne.

The Cumbrian coast is pretty too.

Both would be good for someone willing to do day trips. I think I'd have enjoyed a day trip to Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Vinorosso74 · 22/01/2024 18:17

Northumberland is a good shout. As well as the beautiful coast, castles and towns/villages, you can travel down to Newcastle, Whitley Bay and Tynemouth or Durham area for day trips. It's a lovely part of the country.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/01/2024 18:22

Obviously in Northumberland there's quite a few castles etc but they're each day trips so they'd be interspersed with the outdoors activities during the 6 weeks!

I know the OP specified England but you could get a similarly good mix in North Wales.

DisforDarkChocolate · 22/01/2024 18:25

Northumberland coast
Coniston in the Lake District
Edinburgh

We have so many lovely places.

ymemanresu · 22/01/2024 18:29

Cornwall and fly to the Scilly Islands

FayCarew · 22/01/2024 18:35

I know the OP specified England but you could get a similarly good mix in North Wales.
North Wales has everything apart from a big city and decent public transport.
I'd do Portmeirion, beaches, castles, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Llyn Efyrnwy (Lake Vyrnwy) or Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake), Ynys Môn ...

I've always fancied seeing the Isles of Scilly.

I think you can get a day trip to the Isle of Man from Llandudno.

You can get day trips to Dublin from Holyhead.

FayCarew · 22/01/2024 18:41

I think you can get a day trip to the Isle of Man from Llandudno.
I thought wrong. You can from Liverpool but don't take my word for it.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 22/01/2024 19:33

Welsh Borders.

Viewfrommyhouse · 22/01/2024 19:35

I'd quite happily boat the Broads all summer! Bit spendy though.

Moier · 22/01/2024 19:39

Northumberland.
Stunning beaches.
Plenty to see and do.
Castles.
Holy Island.
Cute fishing villages.
Angel of the North.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 22/01/2024 19:41

Northumberland. But I'd prefer Scotland for that length of time.

Hohofortherobbers · 22/01/2024 19:49

I'd hire a camper van and travel round Scotland.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 22/01/2024 19:50

St ives in Cornwall

FayCarew · 22/01/2024 19:54

Depending on where in Northumberland you are, Scotland is very close.
Scotland is big.
I think the campervan trip might not be relaxing for a lone parent.

LlynTegid · 22/01/2024 20:27

Northumberland might enable you to meet up for a day with your friends in Scotland.

Lonelycrab · 22/01/2024 20:36

Based purely on the places I know but..

Suffolk coast somewhere near Aldeburgh or Woodbridge. Very tranquil slightly inland and lots of lovely coast to visit.

Or the new forest, Brockenhurst area. Get to know the forest walking or biking. IOW easy to reach for day trips or overnight stays.

North Wales is ok, very beautiful and know it well, but after a week or so I’m clamouring for more civilisation.

Hope you can rest up and recharge, op.

Equimum · 22/01/2024 20:42

Cornwall. We always do three weeks every summer in a tiny coastal village, with stunning beach, water sports, access to the coast path and lively restaurants near-by. We spend our days paddle-boarding, surfing at a near-by beach, walking the dog and generally relaxing. I'm always really envious of the families who have holiday homes there and stay for the whole summer.

Passingthethyme · 22/01/2024 20:47

I'd go to Scotland!

KohlaParasaurus · 22/01/2024 20:47

I was going to say London till I read the OP.

Shropshire, or one of the Scottish border towns. Scenic, plenty of interesting places, tourist infrastructure, but also places where people have their homes.

Flossflower · 22/01/2024 21:08

FayCarew · 22/01/2024 16:55

@Flossflower , whereabouts are you going to and from, and what sort of place would you like to stay at/visit?

We are going from the South East to the Cairngorms. We usually make a couple of stops en route. We are looking for somewhere nice to stay and something interesting so see or a nice walk. We don’t mind a bit of a detour. We have already visited Bamborough Castle and a bit of Hadrian’s wall. Thanks.

ismu · 22/01/2024 21:45

I'd definitely go to France, Normandy or Brittany are gorgeous but also Burgundy, although with the Olympics this year anywhere near Paris will be booked up by now.

BringMeSunshine48 · 22/01/2024 22:00

I'm yet to go, but heard so many great things about Northumberland.

Norfolk broads are lovely.

I also absolutely loved Edinburgh and Scottish Highlands, but maybe too far from you.

Agree with others, Devon and Cornwall are beautiful.
