Im having two days in Lincoln in half term. Wilf said he'd like to come so we had a discussion about what "Me time" is!!
I'm planning to go on the train and stay at the Premier Inn. I know about the castle and the cathedral. Any other things to visit? What are the charity shops like as I like a rootle through them? TIA.

If your a cheese fan you need to go the the cheese society.

take a walk by the river.

Must go to Ye Old Trip to Jerusalem pub, under the Castle. Make sure you go upstairs to see what used to be a natural chimney. And also visit the Caves- an amazing world under the Castle too- where people lived for 1000s of years, and right up to WW2.

fleurneige · 21/01/2024 18:29

ooops, got it all wrong- that is in Nottingham, NOT Lincoln. Doh! Walk the Castle walls, visit the Castle and Old Court and see the famous Magna Carta- and if fit walk down and up again to the bottom of the town, past the Norman Jews House, still a restaurant, and one of the oldest still inhabited house in England. But it is STEEP!

@fleurneige I think you got Lincoln and Nottingham confused, no caves at Lincoln.

Steep Hill has lots of shops, some charity shops too! Do you like planes? Lots of plane related stuff to do outside of Lincoln (you’ll need a cab).

The castle and cathedral are in the uphill area. They are worth a visit.
Don’t bother with the downhill part, it’s a shithole.
I’ve lived in this area all my life.
Don’t attempt to speak to the locals, we hate that.

Are you sure you wouldn’t prefer York.

There's a cute horse/donkey sanctuary a few miles away if you like that sort of thing.

A walk around the lake at Hartsholme Country Park is a must. It's very pretty. There's also Whisky Nature Park.

Definitely go in the Cathedral. It's stunning.

A walk up Steep Hill is nice as the buildings are old and quirky and there's a nice sweet shop 🤣. It is steep though 😁.

There's a boat tour that only takes an hour. It's nice and peaceful on Brayford Pool and down the canal.

I'm not a museum fan but I hear the museum of Lincolnshire Life is good and I think there's a RAF/red arrows type museum too.

There's all the usual shops, Odeon and Everyman cinema, theatre, plenty of cafes and restaurants etc. I'm not sure about the charity shops but I'd imagine they'd be similar to most cities.

Have fun. It's a pretty city and easy to drive around.

Don't listen. It's not like this at all. It's a lovely place.

York is for Wilf and I. I know he will like the Railway Museum!

@fleurneige you're thinking of Nottingham there. Not lincoln.

Things to do in Lincoln.

Walk up steep hill. You can do this easily from your hotel. Lots of little shops and cafes on the way up. Lovely views.

Castle. Do the wall walk.
Cathedral.
Ghostbwalk meets in Castle Square some evenings signs will be up.
Tourist info is here too.
Lincolnshire life museum. A walk up and down Burron road - nice little shops a couple of charity shops. Recommend Nonna Juana Deli.
Stroll up to Newport arch. Get coffee at the arch coffee shop.
The collection or The Lincoln museum as its called now is free.
See a show at Thestre Royal
There's lots of nice little pubs and bars. Recommend Cardinals Hat.
The Cornhill area has been updated and has some nice shops and chain restaurants. The Brayford Pool area also has chain restaurents and the cinema (expensive cinema tbough)

You can walk along the river and the Foss canal. The walk to a pub called the pyewipe is a couple of miles all level.
You could check out buses from Central bus station to local towns and villages but as you have only 2 days you probably won't need too.
You don't say when you are visiting but worth checking the Lincoln Big website for events that are happening in the city.

Spot on! 🤣

@Elderflower Don’t laugh at the locals, it’s not nice and it upsets us.

MiniStormInATeacup · 21/01/2024 18:41

Those saying don't bother.

I won't lie. There are parts of lincoln that are a bit run down and attract not so nice people. You always get 'locals' wherever you go. Yes York is probably nicer - they have managed tourism much better but Lincoln has some gems if you look.

I second a walk around Hartsholme Park (yoj can bus from the city to hartsholme) or even a walk around the Arboretum.

Doddington Hall is further and lovely you will need to drive or walk or cycle - which is doable - look up cycle routes.

You could also walk some of the Viking way. Again look this up for routes.

Thankyou for all the suggestions!! 😊

Blimey, your shops must be really, really bad! Lincoln’s shops are rubbish.

That's in Nottingham not Lincoln! And Nottingham is not worth a visit!

fleurneige · 22/01/2024 12:26

Yes, I had a brain f*rt and said so above. Nottingham is very much worth a visit though!
