We are thinking about a hotel stay overnight over half term with a trip to a museum type place. Not London. Travelling from Birmingham and hoping to go on the train. Any recommendations?

Another vote for Oxford. Ashmolean might well be worth a look too.

How old are the dc? What do they like.
Mine loved York railway museum when little.
When older enjoyed the museums in Liverpool and Manchester.

Another vote for Oxford. My DC have loved both the NHM and PR there. They also enjoyed the History of Science Museum and just taking in the city.

I agree. There is an amazing Ancient Egypt section

York Railway Museum is fab, as is the Jorvik Viking Museum.

If your DC are young it's an hour on the train from York to Halifax for the Eureka Children's Museum.
