What's this book?

I was chatting to my friend about this book and I can't remember the title or the author! It sounds too melodramatic to be true so am I imagining it or has anyone else read it. I'm sure I read it about 6 years ago.

Set in the US
A woman starts a relationship with her college prof.
A tragedy occurs and she attempts suicide.
She ultimately is instrumental in capturing a serial killer/murderer!

It felt like about six books in one. Anyone else read this?

Could it be Drowning Instinct OP? Can’t remember all the details but there’s certainly a student-teacher relationship and a house fire she nearly dies in. Not sure if there’s a serial killer though 🤨

No but thanks for trying. In my book it was definitely a college professor and they had a child together.
