The genre of Northern soul records and dancing has been with me for 40yr plus. I'm always keen to hear stuff I've not heard before. Some of my faves.
Betty lavette.. Check on what my condition my condition is in.
The vibrations.. Cause your mines.
The velvellettes.. These things will keep me loving you.
Martha and the vandellas.. One way out.

A Lovers' Concerto by The Toys could count as Northern Soul, if it was a little more uptempo. A great song nevertheless.

Soul bros... Pyramid
Was played at niters not everything was 100 mph stompers.the style of records spun at mid 80s was very different from what went before in the 70s early 80s.

Totally placemarking..I have just said to DH that I want to get into NS!

Northernsouloldies · 26/01/2024 22:17

Bricomalingo channel on you tube, this person's collection must be worth a mint and a good place to start. Once you unearth real nsoul records you will be sad you didn't sooner. Here's one to start with. The artistics.. The hope we have.
Young hearts.. A little togetherness.
OK I snuck in a second. 😁

I really don’t know much about NS but I heard Don’t Let This Happen To Us by Fred Hughes last year and I had to trawl the internet to find it (didn’t know who it was by at the time I first heard it). Sadly it’s not on Spotify so I can’t add it to my playlist but I like to search it out on YouTube whenever I remember.

Northernsouloldies · 27/01/2024 00:10

Yay that's not one I'm familiar with and that's what I was looking from this thread.. stuff I hadn't heard before. Thanks I'm still learning after 40+years of being into Northern.

I have never seen any group of people more united by music than when seeing the Northern Soul prom from the Albert Hall this year (on tv).

Northernsouloldies · 27/01/2024 07:19

I'm glad you observed that, the history of the Northern soul scene can be quite complex considering its longevity and its something that the media often fails miserably on when showing it. I think to truly understand the scene you needed to be part of it at some point in your life and I'm not talking about going to one niter in your youth. Glad you liked the music again there are much better records, songs out there than some that were performed at the proms.
