The genre of Northern soul records and dancing has been with me for 40yr plus. I'm always keen to hear stuff I've not heard before. Some of my faves.
Betty lavette.. Check on what my condition my condition is in.
The vibrations.. Cause your mines.
The velvellettes.. These things will keep me loving you.
Martha and the vandellas.. One way out.

The Poets - She blew a good things
Little Anthony and the Imperials - Better use your head.
Frank Wilson - Do I love you.

Northern Soul and Motown, for me, is joyous and uplifting. The music of my youth growing up in the midlands and then London where I fell in love with funk and disco. It’s a challenge to not smile and keep my feet still when I hear Northern Soul and takes me back to Village discos. 🎶 💃

Love on a mountain top by Robert Wilson.
7 rooms of gloom by The Four Tops. Always sing it before cleaning my house 😁

Not strictly northern soul but should be:
There there my dear - Dexys midnight runners. Stomping!

Stop And You Will Become Aware - Helen Shapiro
I Travel Alone - Lou Ragland
If You Ask Me - Jerry Williams
Can't Help Loving You - Paul Anka

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 21/01/2024 09:15

Let me give you my lovin' - Maxine Brown
You're gonna love my baby - Barbara McNair
If I could only be sure - Nolan Porter

I'm not a proper soulie, only discovered it in my late twenties via Kent records and a club I went to, but there's no music more uplifting for me (and it's partly how DH and I met, so there's that!)

Thanks to all who contributed. I will leave you all with this great record.
The young hearts.... A little togetherness.

Perhaps I'm being unkind but I've seen a few videos of folk at Northern Soul dances and many of them look extremely awkward doing their moves, whilst a handful are getting down. I fully acknowledge I too would be among the awkward squad. I love the music but the dancing appears to be...painful!

Northernsouloldies · 21/01/2024 19:15

It wasn't always like this you have to take into consideration the age of the dancers now anything from 50s to late 60s it's a far cry from when we were teenagers /early 20s thin, fit, and for a lot of us fuelled by amphetamines to dance all night or weekend and travel stupid distances to go to all niters. Age has caught up with us. 😁

Nothing but a heartache the flirterations

TheTecknician · 21/01/2024 20:20

@Northernsouloldies Fair point but a lot of the more youthful dancers fall into the awkward category. Anyone with mobility problems can be excused!

Northernsouloldies · 21/01/2024 20:24

Take a look at the Wigan Young souls on you tube far from awkward. 😁.

Oh my gosh Madeline Bell. Someone mentioned her in one of the first few posts. I saw her live at Ronnie Scott’s in about 1994 and she was AWESOME 💥
