Lancaster?

I'm thinking of moving in the next couple of years. I like the idea of Lancaster- small university city, close to the coast, easy access to the M6 (family in Cumbria). I don't need to consider work options- just somewhere different/ interesting but ordinary/ historical to live.
Anyone have any opinions?

DD was at Uni there, and safety in the city centre was a worry. Lots of violence apparently. Also lots of travellers in from Morecambe.

Interesting- thanks. Just the kind of thing I'm interested in -you can't tell from looking at a map!
