I have attached a picture of the chili flakes I bought in an Asian supermarket. Can anyone tell me what it says on the packet? Are these typical chili flakes used for making kimchi? They seem very fine compared to the ones I've seen in ready-made kimchi.

I speak Japanese and that is not Japanese, it's Korean.
Sorry I can't be of more help but at least it narrows down which language it is! :-)

It is Gochugaru. Korean chilli powder.
It can be found in different grinds - generally coarse or fine.

Yes, used in making kimchi.

It's great! Give it a try. I use it for menus on holidays, image reverse search etc
