Can anyone recommend any spellings apps. My LO is 6 and in year 2. The teacher has said that she has to work on her spellings. Tia

Shout random words at her at different points of the day and ask her to spell them out loud or write them down. Better than any app.

Why does she need to work on them, dyslexia? Anything else going on?

Do they not have spelling tests at school any more? I used to be an avid reader and my spelling has always been very good. Agree with pp ask her to spell random words or give her so many spellings to learn a week? She may not be motivated to learn them though. I love words and word games, what about a word search book?

I was an early and avid reader and my spelling has always been poor.

Really, the school should be suggesting a resource you can use as well as what spellings in particular she can work on. Have they not given you any specifics at all?

School will be assessing her ability to spell certain words by her age so if she’s not, she will need to try harder. School will be able to give you the words she isn’t learning . Does she not bring them home with her every week? Our year 2s have to practise every week at home and we revisit daily in Phonics/spellings session every morning as most primary schools do.

It’s not an app that she needs its daily reading and writing of the words. Try the ‘look, write, cover, write ‘ method. Try writing the words in different colours. Try sticking the words around the house on post-it’s and getting her to bring them to you and reading them to you.

StuckintheRutt · 19/01/2024 17:01

As I said op why isn't she picking up spelling because it may be very far from the case that she "needs to try harder".

Most young dc want to try hard and do well but our clunky useless system doesn't support different ways to learn things.

43ontherocksporfavor · 19/01/2024 17:36

By try harder I mean work on them at home if she’s not already. If she is already working on it then maybe try to find out if there’s anything else going on.

Thanks for all the replies. The school don’t do spelling test as they say it’s not a good way to learn.
My LO is a good reader but she spells things the way she sounds them out, which is how they have been taught.
We try to get her to spell things when we are talking about things. Thanks for the suggestions x
