I hope the mum and baby are both doing OK, and that mum can reach out and get the help she needs without judgement.

Jf20 · 19/01/2024 16:46

Clearly this is about the mother, likely a woman, maybe young whi has hidden her pregnancy . Thr baby is safe and well. And will be adopted. Hopefully the mother will be found and get medical attention.

sre you really crying or was it a bit of hyperbole?

fedupandstuck · 19/01/2024 16:47

It was incredibly fortunate that the baby was found so soon, and the person who found the baby was able to help effectively before the ambulance arrived.

I hope the mother is able to access the help that she needs.

On the odd occasion - maybe especially at my age - the oddest things can just hit you like a freight train. I guess it's the price we (I ?) pay for having a cynical and dark sense of humour.

Poor baby. So glad she was found in time.

regenerate · 19/01/2024 17:00

Probably a blessing in the long run
in fact, almost certainly a blessing in the long run

Darkenergy · 19/01/2024 17:02

This is close to where I live and I find it heartbreaking. I can't imagine the mother's state of mind to do this an hour after giving birth. I truly hope she is found, for her own sake but also because her daughter deserves to at least know her identity. Otherwise you have two people who will live with this forever.

GoodVibesHere · 19/01/2024 17:19

Poor woman and baby. I'm sure if she comes forward she will be given lots of help and support after what she's been through.

I'm so glad the baby is safe.

I actually shed a tear when I saw this on the news earlier. It’s horrific that in this day and age a woman feels unable to have her child with support. We have let her and her baby down.

keylemon · 19/01/2024 17:22

I m glad they found the poor baby on time.

helpfulperson · 19/01/2024 17:33

There is a lady in America who was abandoned as a baby who campaigns for ways to safely abandon babies. Now it's safe haven boxes where a child can be left with emergency services alerted immediately but before that it was about being able to walk into somewhere like a hospital, police or fire station and leave the baby without asking questions. I think the law says they have 14 days to change their mind and the boxes have packets of info for the mother. I think maybe something like this is needed.

fedupandstuck · 19/01/2024 17:37

I don't think that someone in this situation who leaves their baby less than an hour after giving birth is going to have the wherewithal to find a safe haven box. I really don't. It speaks of an immediate crisis, a mental health crisis and of panic. There are more targeted ways you could spend the money to help vulnerable women/girls, imo.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 19/01/2024 17:38

I can't imagine how awful it must be to find yourself in a situation where your brain tells you this is the best course of action.

Zero judgment, only wish the mum had better support around her or felt she had someone she could confide in.

Caravaggiouch · 19/01/2024 17:39

I hope the mother is safe too.

That woman is not a good woman.

This happens so little that what would the chances be of having one in the right place at the right time?

There are many things that could be done to support women and prevent them feeling like this is their only option, having a box in a couple of random locations isn't one imo.

Ponderingwindow · 19/01/2024 17:45

the safe haven laws say that you can bring your newborn to any police station, fire station, or hospital. Yes, there are very few anonymous baby boxes, but the laws allow women to walk in and drop off a newborn if they must. There are emergency services buildings everywhere.

Well, she (?) had the wherewithal to find a towel, which is positive I suppose. I'm not sure why a crisis would prevent someone using a safe haven box/location there was one.

fedupandstuck · 19/01/2024 17:47

Again, I don't think that a women or girl in this kind of situation would have the wherewithal to do that. Even if the law was clear that she would not be arrested for child abandonment.

TheSoundOfMucus · 19/01/2024 17:49

Having worked in this field and spoken to mothers who left babies, a number of them hid and waited to ensure that there babies were safely found.

well, not likely a woman, definitely a woman. You’re not getting male mothers.

I hope she is ok, I hope she can get help.

fedupandstuck · 19/01/2024 17:52

She probably gave birth in a bathroom/toilet, hence the towel. This baby was left almost immediately after giving birth. This was not a rational planned act imo. Giving birth is painful, shocking, bizarre at the best of times, let alone for a vulnerable girl or woman who may be in all kinds of a chaotic situation at home.

I wouldn't stop anyone from campaigning for "safe havens" but I really don't think that's a useful way of helping women and girls.

Sofabum · 19/01/2024 17:53

Wow what a shock for the person who found the baby. Imagine walking along, hearing something and finding a baby!

I hope the mum is ok
