Car key fobs not working!!!

Just that. Tried mine and the spare and they’re not unlocking or locking. Had no issues this afternoon with it. Will it just be the cold? It’s minus three here. First winter with the new car!

Silly question, but have you changed the batteries?

No, but it was working this afternoon and now isn’t nor is the spare. Relatively new car so wouldn’t expect the batteries to be flat. The spare key has never been used

Is it a convertible? Mine won't open if the windows are frozen as they can't drop down

TellerTuesday · 17/01/2024 23:07

Is your car door fully closed?

CornishTiger · 17/01/2024 23:08

Have you had the key fob out in the cold. It will affect the battery.

Is your car door fully closed?

Yes. Would usually illuminate the lights by clicking lock or unlock. Neither button works. It’s as if both the fobs are dud!

No, kept at home where temp is absolute min 16 degrees

I would go check that the doors are fully closed and not just 'latch closed'. I don't think the lights would come on with clicking if not.

Only suggesting this because it happened to me in the supermarket once. I got out and it wouldn't lock but the battery had been in a while so I bought a new one and put it in as leaving the supermarket and it still didn't work when I was walking back. Got round to the drivers side and realised the door wasn't fully closed.

If you need to use the car there is usually a physical key inside the key fob you can use?

JenniferBooth · 17/01/2024 23:20

what make of car is it?

They are. Bamboozled! Can only hope it’s the horrendously cold temperature outside to blame

Yes, it will be the cold. Same happened to me last year when it was -7. Was fine once the weather improved. I just used the normal key for a few hours. It was inside the fob. Pain to get out but managed eventually.

Anxhor · 17/01/2024 23:28

Have you actually put in a new battery yet though and tried that first

Just try the most obvious solution first

Kwam31 · 17/01/2024 23:34

If it's both fobs, it's likely your actual lock is frozen. Can your car be opened by a key or fob only?

GachaBread · 17/01/2024 23:38

Heard multiple other stories today of key fobs malfunctioning. That is just one example I could find

Woah, that’s weird. Especially since I’m not in Birmingham! How bizqrre

Change the batteries first of all. We had to go back to the dealer a couple of weeks ago to have one fob re-programmed but that’s a problem if you can’t get into the car.

PickledPurplePickle · 18/01/2024 09:24

First step - change the batteries

FlyingSoap · 18/01/2024 09:30

Working this morning. How weird

We had this a few times on our Ford. The car battery was dying and eventually just needed replacing. Worth checking

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 18/01/2024 09:38

My Quashqai one is a fucker at the best of times but I've noticed if I leave it in tye car with engine running while I scrape I get the "No Key Detected " message and it won't do anything until I've warmed it up

I absolutely hate keyless ignition and will avoid it in future where possible. I genuinely worry about getting stranded

Mine has a physical key to operate the doors but no where to them insert to start ignition Confused

DelilahBucket · 18/01/2024 09:42

Have you got a mobile phone near to the fobs when you are trying to use them? Mine won't open if my phone is too close. That said, the fobs will have an actual key inside so you can still open the driver door.
