Can anyone recommend a decent shoe rack?

LuckyMum1989 · 16/01/2024 18:55

I have a problem - a total inability to buy a shoe rack that lasts more than a few months 😅 most recent one was Argos, which drove me crazy even before I bought it because all little shoes just fell through the top shelf and accumulated at the bottom...a problem I admit I should have seen coming, given that the shoes were clearly smaller than the shelf (doy!)

I liked the design because it was lightweight and easy to clean / didn't need cleaning all the time... (see pic) but seeing as I couldn't actually store shoes on it without them all falling off, I was actually relieved when it broke 😅😅 But I don't want to get a new one without some semblance of hope it will still be here this time next year!

Because we're a bit tight on cash, we've been getting cheaper ones which may be my error.... but any suggestions, please?

It's right in the middle of our living room (not a porch or landing or anything) so I spend a lot of the day looking at it and want something I don't detest!

Any recommendations from anyone who actually LIKES their shoe rack?! (Does such a person exist? 😉)

See pic below of offending shoe rack..

I have literally been looking into this today. There are shelf and drawer or cupboard style ones which might be nicer looking in a living room, although I appreciate they aren't cheap

This one looks good from John Lewis and has small gaps so stuff shouldn't fall through, it's got good reviews

I have this one, it actually doesn't feel particularly sturdy but it's for adult DS and holds 9 pairs of his size 12s including walking boots and it's help up perfectly well for nearly a year so far.

I have an IKEA TJUSIG which I really like. Cheap and nice and solid. You can also fit the BAGGMUCK shoe mat underneath it (and on the shelves if so desired) to stop the mud from spreading.

I had the one you had too. It didn't last long. We now have a wooden one off ebay and it works well.

Like this one, but not exactly. We have 5 shelves, one for each member of the family.

I got one from Wayfair that's quite good. The closest I could find is this but it's worth looking through as they have loads

We had this one, worked well. Nice and wide too.

I have that one too, but in white. It's extremely well made (and heavy!) and won't collapse.

LexRider · 16/01/2024 20:32

We went on Etsy and got a carpenter to build one to our exact measurements and got to choose the paint etc. It didn’t cost too much cos made out of recycled wood planks. Looks fab

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/01/2024 20:33

We had an Ikea one when we lived in a flat and it worked perfectly well. When we moved we got a shoe cupboard which everyone leaves their shoes outside the door of. Angry

HouseInTheMiddle · 16/01/2024 20:41

We have these. Very sturdy. Mine aren't as shiny gold though but did get them from TKM.

I have this one, been in use for about 6 months now and really sturdy

Thanks all! Was keen to get some advice from people actually using them because i trusted the online reviews previously and that didn't go so well!

Will be looking into those- thanks Mumsnetters!

We have this, albeit in a different colour. We bought through this Not Quite Perfect shop on eBay. It's fantastic for bargains. Ours was a bit damaged but you wouldn't know unless you looked hard.

Not a cheap solution, but after a lifetime of struggling with shoe storage we got this (when reduced in a sale).

We have something similar to this. More pricey than the open racks but looks much nicer and does the job well.

PieAndLattes · 24/01/2024 09:46

Why not just get a nice chest of drawers, cupboards, or chest/blanket box from FB Marketplace and put all the shoes in there? You may even have something useful but unused/filled with rubbish in your home. I have a dresser in my kitchen and the cupboard bit was full of rubbish - old bills, unused omelette maker, and the like. Cleared it out and now it’s my handbag store - it’s big, sturdy, has two shelves, and it’s perfect.

ToothFairy2023 · 24/01/2024 15:36

Sorry OP but an open shoe rack like that will never look good on show in a main living room. I have an IKEA cupboard style one as well as a couple of those types of racks for shoes that aren’t worn so often under a large deep desk out of the way in our study.

RosyappleA · 24/01/2024 16:33

For tight budgets - These despite being cheap last very well.

Of course a cupboard version would be much nicer if you could afford it.

Chouquettes · 24/01/2024 17:29

we ended up getting an ikea ( billy I think) bookshelf which is divided up into cubes, so a couple of pairs a cube . All sorts of sizes and heights etc really stable ( drilled to walk. )Ours is out of sight though .

Wetblanket78 · 24/01/2024 20:52

I've got one of these and it's great. I used to have a metal and plastic over the door one but it kept giving way with the weight of the shoes. I've had this one over 6 months and so far had no problems with it. I put boots in lying down but I'm sure there's one's with boot shelves in as well. Keeps them off the floor thinking of getting another for my bedroom for shoes we don't wear as much.
