Not really a fan but have read the books so have some knowledge. Currently rereading with DD.
Were James and Lily rich even though they were 21 when they died or is all the money in Gringotts from well wishers?
Also what happened to James family?

James is from the 'House of Black' so one of the sacred 28, the Potters were also sacred 28, all loaded!

They inherited a load of money I'm not sure where from.

The Potters were descended from the Peverell family (of Deathly Hallows fame) so there appears to have been a generational wealth aspect. And James Potter's parents were older parents who were well established before they had their only child. They died when he was young (though after he left Hogwarts, as Sirius lived with them during his and James' final years at Hogwarts).

Lily may have had some money too from parents - she wasn't disowned or anything, but they also must have been dead or Petunia wouldn't have been Harry's only living relative.

James' parents were quite elderly, so died before Harry was born (I think from illness/natural causes). They were very wealthy and James was an only child, so it went to him and then Harry.

Being part of the Sacred 28 doesn't guarantee wealth - the Weasleys are also one of the Sacred 28.

James’ parents were rich and had already died when James died. He was their only child. So he’d inherited a lot of money from them.
