She is 15 months, found an old phone while sorting out draws gave it her to keep her amused while she was in her cot and kicking off, well she has done this to it... it did have a couple of cracks in it to begin with so don't think it would've been hard to break anyway but I'm worried she swallowed glass... she is fine in herself and it isn't like she doesn't eat everything anyway but obviously she hasn't eaten a phone before !
I have tried to rinse her mouth out the best I could
I don't have to take her to get checked do i for this ??

All those cracks around the home button were there anyways, it seems she has made the hole

Did you actually see her put any in her mouth or are you just assuming she has done?

Either way, I'd take her to get checked. Any sharp bits could perforate her intestines/bowel

Alloftheskies · 15/01/2024 14:37

You could take her to A&E. Those bits are so small they'll probably just pass thru her naturally. But best for piece of mind to take her. I think they do an xray or similar. My DS swallowed glass when he was 1. He broke a vase and ate some of it! He was absolutely fine apart from a small cut to the mouth. I took him to A&E on the advice of 111 who said its best to do so of you think your child has swallowed something sharp as there's a bit of risk that could hurt them internally. Like I said my son was absolutely fine. They couldn't see anything on the scan/xray whatever it was.. and they said if he has swallowed any of it its small enough just to pass thru and just to keep a close eye on him t home for a few days

marymaryquitecontraryy · 15/01/2024 14:38

Yeah I caught her chomping it so that's when I took it off her and noticed the hole by the button

If you definitely can’t see any glass on the floor around her then I’d probably go to A&E. Best not to take the risk when it’s glass.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 15/01/2024 14:39

You could maybe ring 111 and see what they say.

marymaryquitecontraryy · 15/01/2024 14:40

I found one tiny tiny bit in her cot, so I'm guessing the rest was in her mouth

I think it's so small that I wouldn't be able to see it anyway, most likely she did swallow some but realistically what can a&e do? They can't fish it out can they, I will keep an eye though obviously and make sure she doesn't start to cry out in pain etc
It's tempered glass too so not exactly sharp I think it's made to be crumbly isn't jt
Ahhh wish I never gave it her now !!! Stressing

I suppose they might give her a scan or an Xray or something? When I swallowed a ball bearing when I was four I had to have an Xray, but that was more than 40 years ago, I don't know what they would do today.

Smartiepants79 · 15/01/2024 14:56

If she has swallowed Brocken glass then I’d think you need A&E.
Phone 111 and see how you get on.

marymaryquitecontraryy · 15/01/2024 15:03

I remember having to take my older dc to a&e when a toddler as they smashed part of their front tooth out, the gp said they might have swallowed it, when I got there they said they'll be fine and sent me on my way ! They didn't care at all and made me feel stupid

OP posts:
marymaryquitecontraryy · 15/01/2024 15:03

111 will say a&e regardless, they always do with kids

Swallowing teeth is pretty common and they just dissolve in the stomach acid.

I would ring 111 for some advise.

Considering glass is involved I would guess so.
Best to get checked though?

DrunkenElephant · 15/01/2024 15:06

You really need to take your baby to be checked.

There is a reason 111 will tell you to go to A&E.

It's better to be safe than sorry though isn't it.

marymaryquitecontraryy · 15/01/2024 15:08

Okay thanks everyone

A tooth isn't sharp like glass is. I would take her in.

There are two kinds of "safety" glass, one is the kind that goes into little balls, like car windows and bus shelters. Smashes easily if hit with a sharp point, so no good for phones. The other kind is like car windscreens - does not smash easily, plus it's designed to hold together even when shattered, phone screens are more like this. If a piece breaks off it can be sharp.

dorry678 · 15/01/2024 15:09

Another vote for A&E.

I think you will be in for a very long wait on a Monday though.

BertieBotts · 15/01/2024 15:10

The other thing you could do is watch and wait and take her in if you see signs of a stomach ache or she seems to be unhappy with no clear cause. But that is a bit more risky.

marymaryquitecontraryy · 15/01/2024 15:10

Would minor injuries be okay ? They have xray etc there

OP posts:
dorry678 · 15/01/2024 15:11

I have a smashed iPhone, it's super sharp glass...watching and waiting is a bit too risky IMHO.
