She is 15 months, found an old phone while sorting out draws gave it her to keep her amused while she was in her cot and kicking off, well she has done this to it... it did have a couple of cracks in it to begin with so don't think it would've been hard to break anyway but I'm worried she swallowed glass... she is fine in herself and it isn't like she doesn't eat everything anyway but obviously she hasn't eaten a phone before !
I have tried to rinse her mouth out the best I could
I don't have to take her to get checked do i for this ??

Would minor injuries be okay ? They have xray etc there

This is probably a good idea as they can advise on whether you can treat at home or go for further investigation.

Doyouwantmejusttogo · 15/01/2024 15:16

Unless it’s metal it won’t show up on X-ray, as we were told when child one swallowed Lego.

Sk8erboi · 15/01/2024 15:19

So why have you made a thread if you don't want to hear any suggestions as you've made your mind up.
Wasn't gonna say anything as I try not to openly judge mothers but since your attitude stinks.. fancy giving a smashed phone to a baby to chew 🙄

Right. I'm really wondering about this

Myhubbyisasweetheart · 15/01/2024 15:21

I'm another one voting for A&E. Cute kid btw, I love the trouble they get into 😊

marymaryquitecontraryy · 15/01/2024 15:22

It's just common sense. Who gives a kid something with broken glass to play with. Get off Mumsnet and get your kid to hospital.

bluechicky · 15/01/2024 15:25

Yes you do. Just go and get on with it. Strangers on the Internet can't reason you out of it or if they did what if they are wrong? Why are you looking for an "out" here? Your child can't go by themselves you have to take her.

Even if it had happened to someone else your kid is not their kid just go already and get it done.

pontipinemum · 15/01/2024 15:26

@marymaryquitecontraryy minor injuries sounds like the best spot. I know mine are usually very quick and they will let you know what they thing.

I think I would just to see. Ignore the nasty comments. My ds is approx the same age they get up to so much

VolvoFan · 15/01/2024 15:29

I hope all is well with your baby, OP xx

Chickencupasoup · 15/01/2024 15:29

I was a radiographer until very recently OP. Thick glass shows up on xrays, but it does depend which part of the body it's in. I'd be surprised if the thin glass from a phone would show up on an abdominal xray, even in a toddler. However, they often do a neck to base of abdomen xray in cases like this anyway, on the off chance something shows.

oakleaffy · 15/01/2024 15:32

@marymaryquitecontraryy I dropped a porcelain cup and a bit pinged off and was eaten by puppy
only a fragment
Vet said to keep an eye but it must have passed through harmlessly.
Those screen protectors are so fine it’s not like a huge shard of glass.
You don’t know if any has definitely even been swallowed.

Thehamsterthatcametotea · 15/01/2024 15:36

Quite contrary!

IceWhites · 15/01/2024 15:39

I really don’t want to seem like I’m judging because I’m not, I can’t imagine how hard it was to have her screaming but couldn’t she have cut her little hands when you gave her the cracked screen to play with? :(

marymaryquitecontraryy · 15/01/2024 15:46

Jesus Christ they were hairline scratches people not a full on broken phone screen. wtf would I give anyone let alone a toddler broken glass to play with? Honestly.
Within five mins she had managed to chips the screen, I'm sure this isn't the first time a teething toddler has done this and it sure as hell won't be the last.

Thanks for the helpful supportive comments on here.

marymaryquitecontraryy · 15/01/2024 15:51

Also she wasn't screaming ? Where are you people getting this from ? She was smiling as I took it off her, then screamed because I took it off her, as toddlers tend to do

I work with adults who eat things that they shouldn’t including glass. The worry would be that the glass may cause damage to her throat, stomach, intestines or oesophagus. She may experience pain or difficulty in swallowing.
She is very young and so won’t be able to tell you where or how it hurts. ‘Watchful waiting’ in a child that has potentially swallowed glass is dangerous.

Maraa · 15/01/2024 16:07

Oh bless her, hope she is ok.

your doing the right thing getting her checked out, even if the possibility is small. You don’t want to be worrying if she seems fussy in herself the next few hours or days. Really hope she is ok. These kiddo’s can be little monkeys can’t they. My daughter hasn’t eaten anything sharp but we were in the garden in summer and I thought she had eaten a leaf…. She had a full butterfly in her mouth - how she managed to find one catch it and eat it I’ll never know!

Sweepies · 15/01/2024 16:44

"Jesus Christ they were hairline scratches people not a full on broken phone screen"

To be fair OP you also said...

"All those cracks around the home button were there anyways, it seems she has made the hole"

The phone looked to be pretty damaged before the hole was made with significant cracks at the bottom, not "hairline scratches", you literally described it as having cracks in the original post lol.

It was a stupid decision so no point getting worked up that people are calling you out for giving a baby a cracked phone to "play with". Also you were obviously looking for people to tell you "nah dont go" with your comments about them not being able to do anything for her.

Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

I hope you took your baby to the hospital.

I'm in no way a perfect parent but I sure as heck would not give a child a busted phone and have glass missing and not be at ER

I didn’t want to be the first one to say it but what the actual fuck? Who gives a baby a smashed phone to play with ffs. And then makes every excuse under the sun about why she shouldn’t seek urgent medical attention for a child who has likely literally swallowed broken glass. I can’t believe she’s said she’ll wait and see if the child experiences stomach pain and then take her in, is she too daft too realise that stomach pains from glass will be internal bleeding from it slicing her daughters organs up!
