Heating overnight

Live in a flat and it's extremely cold overnight. Currently the hall is 14 degrees. Extremely cold throughout. DC is in my bed tonight. The thermostat on 15, and it will go all night I suspect. WIBU to leave it on all night or would that be terribly wasteful?

Terribly wasteful. Presumably you sleep IN your bed with duvet:blankets etc, why does the house need to be hit & what's the relevance of the temp in the hallway unless you're preparing for a night of ghosting?

Frotheecoffee · 15/01/2024 01:37

Thermostat is in the hallway. It's stuck on and not a moveable one. Also not programmable so it means waking up and DC getting ready for school in 12-13 degrees.

But you are right, it is terribly wasteful.

I couldn't sleep with the heating on, not about it being wasteful but o like. Cool room and it always feels so stuffy if the heating kicks in

I have my bedroom window open tonight

Narwhalsh · 15/01/2024 01:53

Getting dressed in the morning is less pleasant for sure! It’s cheaper to heat one room so could you source a heater for your bedroom with a timer on it for the mornings?

2024GarlicCloves · 15/01/2024 02:03

Mine's on 24/7 from sometime in December to early March. I can keep it on a moderate setting the whole time (that's 17° for me, ymmv), although I'll turn it up during the day if it gets really cold outside.

DramaAlpaca · 15/01/2024 02:09

It is wasteful really. I only ever leave the heating on all night if the outside temperature is well below freezing. I try to just heat downstairs and only put the upstairs heating on if really necessary for an hour or so before bed. Getting up in the morning is horrible though. Annoyingly, for some reason we don't have a thermostat so I'm forever manually adjusting the boiler.

WildFlowerBees · 15/01/2024 02:17

We set our heating to come on at 5am until 7am so it's warm when getting up and we only heat the rooms we need. Could you do something like that?

coxesorangepippin · 15/01/2024 02:18

Ours is on low overnight, 18 degrees

I think 12 degrees is too cold, you will become ill

SuperDopper · 15/01/2024 02:19

Not sure if it is wasteful. Isn’t it more energy efficient to have the heating at a moderate temperature all day long rather than turn it on and off, as it works harder to heat up when it’s been off overnight than it does to maintain it at a consistent temperature.

Ladyj84 · 15/01/2024 02:21

Wasteful, get another duvet, blanket, bedsocks. All our kids and we have them, nothing like being snug in bed. Heating goes on when hubby goes to work at 6am and me and kids get up around 7:30 to a warm downstairs as we only turn upstairs on when freezing or on an evening

Desecratedcoconut · 15/01/2024 05:31

I have my overnight setting at 17c. I don't think it's wasteful at all.

Caspianberg · 15/01/2024 05:37

We have ours on overnight in some rooms as it gets too cold. But all individual start thermostats so we can set the bedrooms on 18, and living rooms off, then living rooms and bathrooms come on automatically around 6am at 20/ 21 ready for us to get up. Bedrooms come on warmer at 6am also

Grilledsquid · 15/01/2024 05:38

I have mine set on thermostat because if it woild get too cold my sinuses give me grief.
It's not wasteful if you are cold🤷

Neurodiversitydoctor · 15/01/2024 05:40

I think it was below freezing nearly everywhere in the UK last night. I am in the South East the heating stayed on.

Heating overnight
moleeye · 15/01/2024 05:41

Never have it on overnight

Just woke up and house is 12 degrees, will stick the heating on now and it'll be warm enough by the time the kids wake up in about 30 mins.

MinnieMountain · 15/01/2024 05:42

Our thermostat is at 15 from 8pm-6am. 18 the rest of the day. We turned it off at night last winter but that felt miserable.

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 15/01/2024 05:44

Ours is on atm, but I have a 5 week old that's refusing to sleep so I'm awake, boobs out, and up and down when I need to pace with him, change him etc. He's fine, he's appropriately dressed for the temp.

littleblackcat27 · 15/01/2024 05:45

Hehe - sounds quite warm to me! ie 14 degrees.

Our heating is set to go on automatically at night if the temp goes below 5 degrees.

I think we must be weird.

idontlikealdi · 15/01/2024 05:48

I hate having the heating on overnight. If it's cold we have extra blankets to go on top of duvets. It's set to come on an hour before we get up.

Whataretheodds · 15/01/2024 05:51

It's not wasteful if it stops you getting ill (and I notice most people saying it is have timers on their thermostats.

AppleKatie · 15/01/2024 05:52

Just woken up here. The house is 11 degrees but the heat is on warming it up and it will be warmer by the time dc get up. It’s chilly for me but not dangerous and everyone is warm in their own beds.

different if you have a baby and are up and down all night but otherwise I don’t see the issue.

Lucylou07 · 15/01/2024 05:56

Surely it just depends on the house. We tried having the heating off in this house overnight but it would then take a good 24h to reach temperature so we now have it on a constant 17. Admittedly we've just moved and so need to sort the heating out

Caspianberg · 15/01/2024 05:56

And we used to have it off, but since Ds was born 3 years ago we have been up and down in the night and it was miserable that first winter getting up to settle and feed baby when it was freezing. Bought Tado radiator thermostats the Black Friday after and so the last 2 winters we have just been able to keep it on but slightly lower in the bedrooms, hallway and upstairs toilet. It’s been far better for our health I think. As 11/13 degrees and cold when you have covid/ cold/ sniffles takes you far longer to recover.

Loafbeginsat60 · 15/01/2024 06:05

I would be miserable waking up at 12 degrees - I hate being cold.

Our bedrooms are set to 18 and the rest of the house 19/20 but we do sleep work a window open.

Our heating is on all the time at the moment so doesn't go below 18. It's -3 outside and blowing a snow storm.

maddiemookins16mum · 15/01/2024 06:06

I’m just up, it’s 13 downstairs. Just turned the heating on and set at 17.
