Heating overnight

Frotheecoffee · 15/01/2024 01:31

Live in a flat and it's extremely cold overnight. Currently the hall is 14 degrees. Extremely cold throughout. DC is in my bed tonight. The thermostat on 15, and it will go all night I suspect. WIBU to leave it on all night or would that be terribly wasteful?

I think it's a waste. It was 13c in my lounge this morning but the CH soon had the house warmed up. Can you get oil filled radiators for your bedrooms to run on a night, rather than running the heating.

littleblackcat27 · 15/01/2024 05:45

Hehe - sounds quite warm to me! ie 14 degrees.

Our heating is set to go on automatically at night if the temp goes below 5 degrees.

I think we must be weird.

Do you mean your house gets to 5c inside???

PPTorPDF · 15/01/2024 06:12

I think it's a waste. Ours comes on in the morning at 15 degrees. I'm a warm person so any higher than that makes me feel ill.

BobnLen · 15/01/2024 06:13

I set mine to 15 overnight as last year our condensate pipe froze and caused a small leak as it pushed off at the boiler end, one of the ways of preventing this is have your heating on low when it is very cold. I also turned my boiler up a bit from the recommended 60c which also helps with this. Boiler is upstairs so pipe cannot be easily unfrozen from outside. Also having it on a night a bit seems to help with keeping a warm daytime temperature as it doesn't have to heat from very cold

Devilsmommy · 15/01/2024 06:20

I've got a 15mo and mines on overnight set at 22. I don't care if it's wasteful, I'm not letting my child go cold

spongecakeappleslice · 15/01/2024 06:31

If you can afford it I don’t think it’s wasteful at all to have your heating on 15 throughout the night considering how cold it is currently.

I personally would feel cold at that temperature.

we set ours at 20 from 6am to 10pm with a few adjustments throughout the day if needed.

Ronnie887 · 15/01/2024 06:38

I've just got up and it's 17° with no heating. It's set to come in at 15° o/n but rarely kicks in The bonus of living in a terrace where either side seem to heat their house like a sauna.

17° in the day is fine for me with menopausal sweats, everyone else can stick an oodie on.

icelollycraving · 15/01/2024 06:39

Dh has an autoimmune condition which means the cold causes him pain. He’s never liked being cold even before he was ill. I have it set to 16/17 as a minimum most of the day but 19/20 morning and evening. The house never feels boiling and I hate being too hot as does Ds.
If it feels very chilly I give it a boost for an hour.
Getting up into 12/13 sounds miserable and although I’m ok in the morning, I’d struggle getting out of a cosy bed.
In spring, summer I change the settings and obviously in summer the heating is off. Power bills are costly so I can see why people are cautious. Do what you can afford and feels comfortable in your home.

Cakeandcardio · 15/01/2024 06:51

We set ours to 18 overnight. If we didn't, the house gets too cold and our DS wakes up. I don't think it's wasteful at all.

22 overnight? Is that a typo? What do you have it on during the day?

OldBeyondMyYears · 15/01/2024 06:57

I'd not be able to sleep with the heating on (not least because I'd be worrying about the bill!! 😨)

Even last night (when outside reached minus temperatures) I still had 'one leg out' as I get so hot at night 🤷‍♀️

deepsea9 · 15/01/2024 07:07

Our gas alone would be around £25 - 30 a day if we had it on overnight.

We don’t. Thick duvets, warm pjs, bedsocks, extra blankets.

In a previous flat which was freezing (and the bedroom was the coldest room - think massive single glazed Victorian bay) we had no curtains the first winter we lived there. We got an electric radiator to make it more bearable in the mornings.

Weird in what way? I've never had heating ion overnight , thats not unusual is it. I've also never had a thermometer so don't know what the temperature is inside,I'm always surprised at how many posters do know the temperature in their houses

That's a joke based on your username, right? 😂😂😂

I must be too then.

The thermostat is usually on 5. I put the heating on if I'm having a bath but mostly I just use heated throws.

Daytime I only put it it on if we're in and it goes under 20

Nope. My flat feels freezing if it goes under 20. Though good catch, I didn't get that one🤣🤣🤣

FrenchandSaunders · 15/01/2024 07:17

22 at night 😳. I don’t have it on 22 in the daytime, let alone under a duvet. I’d wake up feeling awful and groggy.

We turn ours down to 14/15 at night, 18 in the day. Rarely feel cold.

Justamblingalong · 15/01/2024 07:21

Having the heating on overnight would make me feel poorly. I remember staying over my friends and parents once who did this in the winter and I woke up sweaty and groggy.

A winter duvet, blankets, a decent pair of socks, and I occasionally use an electric heater or hairdry DS’s school clothes if it’s really bad in the mornings, otherwise our thermostat in the bedrooms reads 10 degrees normally.

catelynjane · 15/01/2024 07:21

coxesorangepippin · 15/01/2024 02:18

Ours is on low overnight, 18 degrees

I think 12 degrees is too cold, you will become ill

18 degrees is our daytime temperature in this house 😂 I would get such a bad headache if it was that warm while I was sleeping.

Crochetpenguin · 15/01/2024 07:23

Our heating goes off at 9pm and back on between 6am and 8am. Think the boiler clicking on and off in the night would be really annoying as well as expensive. We also have the bedroom window slightly open all night.

megletthesecond · 15/01/2024 07:27

Always on overnight here. Set to 19°. Tried without and lower and I couldn't sleep.

WhamBamThankU · 15/01/2024 07:27

My heating is on 5.30-7.30 in the morning, and 3.30-6 on an evening. I refuse to get up into a freezing house, especially when me and my son both have baths on a morning.

Singleandproud · 15/01/2024 07:27

Turn the radiators off and shut the doors in the rooms you don't need warming and then have the heating on, as a compromise.

Snugglemonkey · 15/01/2024 07:28

12 degrees is too cold. It is bad for health. We do not let the temperature go below 16.
