Heating overnight

Frotheecoffee · 15/01/2024 01:31

Live in a flat and it's extremely cold overnight. Currently the hall is 14 degrees. Extremely cold throughout. DC is in my bed tonight. The thermostat on 15, and it will go all night I suspect. WIBU to leave it on all night or would that be terribly wasteful?

Weird in what way? I've never had heating ion overnight , thats not unusual is it. I've also never had a thermometer so don't know what the temperature is inside,I'm always surprised at how many posters do know the temperature in their houses

The temperature is on the thermostat if you've got one with a digital readout

TreeStone · 15/01/2024 07:29

Houses are all different, budgets are all different, I'm sure thermostats vary too. You need to do what works for you.

Do you not have a way of setting the heating to come on and off at different times of day? When we had a thermostat in the hall we also had the heating set to come on and off at different times. It would be off overnight but would come on at 6am or so, so it was warm enough by the time we got up. Have the heating on all night if you need to, but you shouldn't need to just so it can come on before you get up in the morning.

FrenchandSaunders · 15/01/2024 07:30

Why is it bad for health if you don’t have any obv conditions that are affected by the cold? I think it’s worse for health to live in a stuffy unventilated house.

FrenchandSaunders · 15/01/2024 07:17

22 at night 😳. I don’t have it on 22 in the daytime, let alone under a duvet. I’d wake up feeling awful and groggy.

We turn ours down to 14/15 at night, 18 in the day. Rarely feel cold.

Yes but it's for the baby who won't have a blanket or wear a fleece onesie so heating is all I can do

ThreeRingCircus · 15/01/2024 07:31

We don't have it on overnight, it would be wasteful and feel stuffy.

At this time of year we all have an extra blanket on top of our duvets and wear warm pyjamas. The heating is set to come on at 6am which is an hour before we all need to be up.

DappledThings · 15/01/2024 07:32

She said her thermostat wasn't programmable.

OP when I lived in a cold flat with a thermostat like that, so you can't set it, only turn it on and off manually I used to set an alarm for an hour before I needed to get up, jump up and switch it on then go back to sleep for an hour while it warmed up. Clothes on radiator.

Redwineandcake · 15/01/2024 07:33

We have ours on overnight at around 18. The temperature drops to as low as 14 in the bedrooms in the daytime never mind night time! I also sleep in jogging bottoms and a fleece under a duvet sometimes I'm that cold!

Vettrianofan · 15/01/2024 07:33

Have mine in 23C all through day and night. It's bloody 🥶

Motheranddaughter · 15/01/2024 07:33

Our heating was on last night as it was very cold with snow
I refuse to be cold in my home

BobnLen · 15/01/2024 07:35

I do have my electric blanket on all night on very low when it's cold, it's a twin sided one so DH doesn't have his side on

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 15/01/2024 07:37

I dont have mine on overnight, can't afford to. It's frequently 12 degrees in the morning. I put it on for an hour. Dc in bed with vest, thick onesie and bed socks. Winter quilts and fleecy covers. Both have a hot water bottle. They have boot style slippers.

3Tunes · 15/01/2024 07:39

Not wasteful to keep the house from getting so cold that it takes hours or days to warm up again. Being able to afford it is different, though.

I have my heating set to click on anytime if it hits 15 (unless we’re away and have set holiday mode) and to get the house to 20 for 6.30am when we all get up. Then off again after 8.00am, and set to be at 20 in time for the DC to be home from school. It goes off again fairly early as we tend to be on one room in the evenings and use the gas fire in there rather than heating the whole house.

toastofthetown · 15/01/2024 07:40

We have our heating low at night and my husband almost always has the window open. I have a 15 tog duvet and the heated blanket on when I go to sleep and that keeps me nice and warm, and I feel the cold very easily. A podcast I listened to recently said that generally people have better quality sleep when sleeping in a cool room than a warm one.

We do have a thermostat so that the house to warm up by the time we get up. If we didn’t then I’d probably have a different attitude. Would it be possible to install a time on your thermostat?

Frasers · 15/01/2024 07:44

I don’t agree it’s wasteful at all. It is better to maintain a base temperature in the house than let it get very cold then try to heat it up

i keep mine at 15 through the night, so it maintains at that temp, and then in the morning, doesn’t take much to increase the temp to something more comfortable.

MrsAmaretto · 15/01/2024 07:47

We also have Tado controls - blooming marvellous and has saved us a fortune. Our bedrooms are set to 15/6 overnight, kitchen 12, sitting room 14 and then for the bedrooms, , to go to 18 from 7-815, kitchen 15 7-8, sitting room 17.

I grew up in a damp, single glazed, freezing house with ice frequently on the inside of windows and having to use towels to mop up the condensation every morning. Being warm and having a house with no black condensation marks is a priority.

im in northern Scotland so my heating is never off. It rarely gets above 14degrees here.

MumblesParty · 15/01/2024 07:47

Is there definitely no way of setting a timer OP? I know you said the thermostat isn’t programmable (nor is mine), but don’t most heating systems have a little box that enables you to set it to come on and go off at certain times?

I would hate to have the heating on all night, but it definitely needs to come on half an hour or so before I have to get up.

SpringMeadows · 15/01/2024 07:48

Can people please also say how much they pay per day for their heating? If we were to keep ours on all day and all night, it would cost us over £25 a day. We have a 4 bedroom house.

bobomomo · 15/01/2024 07:51

The mine is set at 14 degrees overnight but I can't remember it ever actually coming on, 18 in the mornings and early evenings.

megletthesecond · 15/01/2024 08:12

spring my December gas charges for 24/7 heating was £160. Small ex council 3 bed combi boiler.

borntobequiet · 15/01/2024 08:22

Use your heating to suit yourself and your budget. Or get a better thermostat. Or get a small programmable convector or oil filled heater just for the room(s) you use in the morning. Alternatively, a fan heater works very quickly.
14° isn’t really cold though. My kitchen and bathroom were 5° first thing in the recent cold spell, 9° this morning. They warm up fast with a fan heater, which is only kept on as long as needed.

Blessedbethefruitz · 15/01/2024 08:25

Oil radiator in the kids room overnight (I co sleep in there too) as our flat gets freezing and the youngest is only 1. It really helps with condensation/mould too, which we're also prone to here.

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/01/2024 08:33

We never have the heating on over night but our flat never dips below 15 degrees really.

Whilst not a comfortable or good temperature for sitting around in (especially if you are not dressed warmly), 14 degrees is not "really freezing" if you are in bed with a decent duvet and covers.

Think about it logically, 14 degrees is a moderate early spring day temperature in the UK. Would you describe it as "really freezing" if it was 14 degrees outside?

DasAlteLeid · 15/01/2024 08:36

I’m so curious to know how much this is costing the 24/7 CH users. Heating our three floor, fairly large semi costs over £1 an hour. At the moment we have it on for about four/five hours per day.

Also I always thought I felt the cold but I turn the CH off at about 17 and feel perfectly warm. 13 overnight at the moment and we’re all fine! Bit of hairdryer and electric heater in the mornings and we’re good to go. I guess I should be grateful as we’re spending close to £200 on energy bills per month at the mo 😩

JustExistingNotLiving · 15/01/2024 08:42

Frotheecoffee · 15/01/2024 01:37

Thermostat is in the hallway. It's stuck on and not a moveable one. Also not programmable so it means waking up and DC getting ready for school in 12-13 degrees.

But you are right, it is terribly wasteful.

I’d change the thermostat.

Cheaper than running the heating all night.
More comfortable too.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 15/01/2024 08:42

I have mine ticking over at 15. It's cheaper, as my house falls to 12 in this weather and then the heating has to work so hard to get it back to a liveable temperature.
So not wasteful at all.
