Fridge freezer making a loud noise : is it safe ?

I have a 4 y/o American style fridge freezer which was 2nd hand when I bought it. Its been a bit noisy these last few days. Today its making a really loud noise. Would I be wise to unplug it before bed ? I don't want to lose co tents but also don't want to lay awake worrying it might catch fire or something?

Mine does that when it needs a defrost. It is cold enough to put contents outside in boxes and unplug.

mine needs 48 hours for ice build up to melt then it works again.

@Pastlast - I can't see any visible frost/ ice build up, but it IS jammed full with food ?

The compressor is probably on it's last legs. I'd be figuring out a way to save your food if I were you.

@Aquamarine1029 yes I think I'll have to go down that route in the morning.
Just wondered if safe to to bed now ?

Describe the noise. Is it like a whining cat? In which case it's probably just too full or not draining.

Have you checked to see if the coils are dirty? They will either be on the back of your fridge or underneath. If they are dirty, it forces your compressor to work much harder to maintain the temperature.
