Sorry if TMI...blood in toilet

Hi all,
Firstly, I know posting here is not in place of medical advice. Just wanted some experiences as I don't think it's necessary to go to the GP just yet.

So the last few days when I have a bowel movement the toilet bowl is filled with red blood. If I go for a wee and pass wind or "push" at all, I also bleed and the toilet bowl is full. I've not strained at all. I suppose I could have a cut/fissure but I dabbed around with toilet paper and strained a bit and no blood on the toilet paper. So I assume internal but higher up. I know it's dark blood that's a concern and the red indicates it's high up. Never had and haemorrhoids as far as I know! Is it normal to have so much blood from a tear?

Sorry, reply will be quite a lot of TMI.
I suffer with chronic constipation so its quite normal for me to have a lot of blood.

You didn't say which red you were getting.
Deeper red/coffee ground sort of colour indicates its higher up.
Brighter red is more likely to be from a tear further down or haemorrhoids.

Was there pain when you last went to the toilet? Did it feel like a harder or bigger movement than usual? If neither, you probably need to make a GP appointment, just to have it checked out.

Blood in stools without a clear reason can be a sign of cancer so please do have it checked out if you can't see any reason for it.

You need to see a doctor, and fairly quickly. It could be a haemorrhoid, it could be IBD, or it could be something more sinister.

Do you have abdo pain? Any weightloss? Have you had a look?

@Jumpingpogosticks thank you for sharing. Yes it's bright red blood, which is why I'm not so concerned. I didn't strain or feel any kind of tear but obviously possible it's something minor that I've not noticed.

@Snowdogsmitten no weight loss. No pain at the moment. It's hard to say...2 years ago I had awful stomach cramps, went into hospital had a CT scan and was told I had an inflammed small bowel and they queried Crohns. I then had an MRI, GP said results looked fine. Although I was supposed to be seeing gastro but it's been 2 years and no word...
I do get occasional random diarrhea and can't take laxatives, peppermint capsules or even the herbal sleeping tablets without getting diarrhea, severe cramps and nausea. So I do wonder if I have some inflammation.

I'm assuming I probably just have a small tear. I may give it a few weeks and see if it clears and if not, visit the GP.

A small tear (from my experience) shouldn't bleed for any more than 3 or 4 days.. so please don't leave it as long as weeks.

I won't continue to add graphic information.

But also, good to hear its bright red opposed to darker.

PaperDoIIs · 13/01/2024 21:16

Any pain at any point during the week or straining more than usual? Sometimes you can tear or have internal piles ,but if subsequent stools are soft enough they don't cause any more damage/tearing so it doesn't hurt , however the movement will make you bleed anyway.

Get yourself to the GP. No one can give a diagnosis on here.

I'll definitely make an appointment if it hasn't cleared by the end of next week.

I'd do it sooner than that. I have ulcerative colitis which can have bleeding like you describe. Don't delay is my advice.
