Should I go to A and E? I hate wasting time

Doormouse46 · 13/01/2024 18:06

Just to say I hate wasting time especially when A and E will be busy on the weekend. For the past 3 days, I have had sickness and diarrhoea. At first I thought it was a bug, then food poisoning then maybe Norovirus. I don’t want to go to the doctors if I’m going to make more people sick.

However, I noticed the vomiting/diarrhoea comes after I eat or drink only. I even tried to have a few strawberries this morning and within 20 minutes I vomited them back up.

The same this afternoon, I ate some toast following the brat method and it came straight back up. It’s the same with anything I drink even water. I’m so dehydrated my lips are chapped and I’m pale as a ghost.

The other thing I’ve noticed is my poo (sorry) is sort of black and thick now and smells horrendous even though I’ve not eaten for 3 days now. I’ve lost weight but that’s to be expected. I have a cracking headache which I think is from dehydration.

i really don’t know what to do. I’ve tried an anti sickness band, didn’t work- I’ve tried not eating which does work but I even bring up water.

I don’t know what to do. I feel sort of like I’m dying (sounds dramatic I know). I called my mum for advice as she’s a GP receptionist and she basically told me to keep out and keep drinking water best I can.

i just feel so helpless and can’t see an end to it. I’d appreciate any advice!

@Doormouse46 I’ve just seen your more recent updates .. peritonitis is life threatening.. I am so glad you went to A and E

dottiedodah · 14/01/2024 18:05

I would call 111 ,the black poo sounds a worrying symptom and woud need to be looked at straight away I would think

dottiedodah · 14/01/2024 18:06

Oh good you got to A and E sorry missed it!

therealcookiemonster · 14/01/2024 18:12

OP I am very glad that you are doing better, I hope you make a full recovery soon. this was such a near miss.

coxesorangepippin · 14/01/2024 18:16

Have been reading this thread and waiting for an update. You're in good hands now @Doormouse46. Take your recovery easy.

Fellow sufferer of sepis though I had to have an operation the next day. My problem was severe constipation and a haemotoma following a routine pelvic operation at the age of 29. Yes, I felt I was dying.

All best wishes to you xx

Salome61 · 14/01/2024 18:38

Best wishes for your recovery, so very sorry you have suffered like this.

I didn't learn about 'black' poo until my beloved late elderly sheltie was poorly - the vet told me that 'black' poo normally means a bleed from somewhere.

So glad you are in the right place, take great care.

OP I'm glad you got yourself treated. I literally just saw this thread and was horrified at everyone just telling you to drink some water and leave it.

Just remember, for the future, it's better to waste some time than to end up dead. Our bodies are more fragile than most realise.

Wishing you a quick and full recovery x

Have you read a different thread to the rest of us? Most people told the OP to seek medical care either via 111 or A&E, myself included. Hydration tips were secondary to this. The reason individual posts are being pulled out by individual posters is because if they had been the majority then extremely dangerous advice would have been given.

Typically people post seeking guidance to get a consensus, if these dangerous posts had been the consensus and the OP not as sensible as she clearly is a different outcome may have presented itself.

I hope you have a speedy recovery op

Perhaps if this type of crap on these type of threads was reported by multiple people. MNHQ would step up and actually monitor these threads and ban the idiots who persist in posting on them as self proclaimed medics?

haveacat · 14/01/2024 19:24

Ignore my earlier post! OP did the right thing going to A&E. My best wishes to OP for a speedy recovery.

FourthToeOnTheRight · 14/01/2024 19:25

@Doormouse46 so pleased you’re now on the ward and being treated. Fingers crossed you will be feeling much better soon. 💐

Diamondcurtains · 14/01/2024 19:39

Flat coke always helps when I’ve had a sickness bug. I had one last year that was horrendous, I’ve never felt as ill in my life. Coke was the only thing I could keep down for days. I actually spent the whole night laid in the bath with the shower running as stuff was coming out of everywhere !

just seen your update. Wow so glad you went in. Hope you’re feeling better soon.

Willmafrockfit · 14/01/2024 19:51

an old lady in the care home i worked at vomited dark, like coffee grains, it was serious. internal bleeding.
she survived, despite being about 100

Bluebunnylover · 14/01/2024 21:14

You should take some immodium. I had stomach issues over Xmas and this really helped

Maybe read the whole thread?? OP had a burst stomach ulcer and sepsis. Was seriously unwell. So needed a&e, not Imodium.

Starbaristhebestbar · 14/01/2024 21:20

Shocking advice from your mother. A gp receptionist should not be giving out any sort of medical advice to the degree of telling soemone not to seek help. The NHS is broken and gp surgeries are unable to keep up with appointments so have resorted to using receptionists to triage. I am a doctor and no medical colleague of mine who is any bit decent at their job will ignore dark stools and tell you to drink more water(???)
Even if you did not have any other symptoms you should have been told to go in right away to either your gp/A&E and in this case all your other gastro symptoms should have made it all the more serious.

RejuvenatedJJanuary · 14/01/2024 21:21

@Doormouse46

Oh my goodness what a roller-coaster!
Re wasting a and e time they triage people so you can't really technically waste their time in that they won't treat you over other people.

Thank goodness you went... How many lives have been saved by mumsnet!!

Black, sticky and very smelly poo can indicate bleeding in the upper part of your digestive system. This could be a simple tear from vomiting, but you need to be get checked out, especially if you are unable to keep fluids down. Consider rehydration drinks, or water with salt and sugar added. One sip every few minutes.

MunchMunch · 14/01/2024 21:29

I always remember seeing a sign in the receptionist cubicle (meant for them to see, not the patients) that was about sepsis, it listed the patient as "feeling like they're dying" as a symptom of sepsis. So in your case you certainly weren't being dramatic and it must be "a thing". I'm glad you went to hospital as your symptoms sounded urgent despite what others have said. My brother died from sepsis and I think that's because he waited too long to get help. By the time he did his kidneys had all but shut down, along with a few other complications.

I hope you're feeling better soon.
