Bedtimes for 7/8 year olds

Could you tell me about bedtimes for your 7/8 year olds? What time do they go to bed, what time do they go to sleep? Do they have a bath? Do they wind down on their own in bed with a book or anything?

It feels like my 7.5 year old DD has outgrown her bedtime routine and it’s not working for us for a number of reasons. But she’s tricky at bedtime so looking for inspo to revamp her routine.

thanks!

Bed at 8-8.30, no bath before bed. Sometimes reads a book before bed.

Bed at 8.15, tbh normally on her iPad and then cleans her teeth at 8.00 and then sits with us/cuddles with us until 8.15. Once in bed can read or draw for 10/15 mins and then lights out.
weekends she goes up about 9.00ish but pretty much the same as the weekdays.

Goes up 8-8.30ish, teeth and wash, reads for a little bit with Dad and then left ot read alone. Usually will turn light off and go to sleep himself, occasionally we have to prompt.

What is it currently op and why isn't it working?

Bed at around 8.30ish. Showers himself now before bed, cleans teeth and then usually straight to bed after. If he can't get to sleep, he reads in bed for a bit.

Bath about 6pm, every other night, bed 8.30pm latest, unwind time. X

Just have to set a time and stick to it, not easy, be persistent and it will become the norm. Xx

8yo here - needs a lot of sleep so upstairs 7.30-8pm for teeth and then we read a story which is usually a couple of chapters. Lights out 8-8.30pm and he sleeps through until 7.15-7.30am.

Baths or showers alternate days. When he was a lot younger we found that a bath at bedtime was too stimulating as he liked to play and thrash about so we switched to mornings, however now he does either/or.

Thanks all. Really interesting. Keep it coming!

@SleepingStandingUp She can’t yet go to sleep on her own. This has been a source of frustration to me for a while. But it’s got worse lately because she’s taking SO long to go to sleep, so it feels like I’m there for a long time.

So I’ve been wondering if she needs a later bedtime but also need to look seriously at getting her sleeping independently. I was wondering if a whole ‘big girl’ revamp of bedtime might help with that - go up a bit later than her little brother, new reading light etc

7 and 8yo both in bed for half 7, asleep by 8 nine times out of ten. Awake at half 6 thanks to their body clocks not through choice!
The smaller one likes to listen to some music as she goes to sleep, the bigger one likes nothing at all.

Bath 6,15, then 15 mins of tv, school reading and bedtime stories, lights off 7.30-7.40 with an audiobook or white noise. We get up at 6.30am. She's 7 and a bit.

Sauvignonblanket · 12/01/2024 23:09

She does have screen time before bath, it's not 15 mins total.

He will go up at 8/8.30 and often struggle to get to sleep so reads/plays with Lego. Recently he has struggled until 9.30/10 which worries me!
