I love me a charity shop and I was in one the other day and I randomly said to my mother 'I think we need a new pic for your husbands room 'cause the deers are old'. I went to the picture bin and found an oil painting in a semi decent frame signed by an artist called Alan Thompson, it was about 45cmx30 so not small small. It was a beautiful painting of a river and scenery, all very pink and green which was ideal for the bedroom and for the bargain price of £3!

When I got home I thought I'd google the artist as it had his card still attached to the back and I couldn't believe it when I saw a lot of his paintings sell from £600-£2.5k.......

Obviously not selling it but it's good to know that some good buys are out there!

I know you don't have to but I think I'd have to take it back and let them sell properly!

My best buy was a lovely necklace I got decades ago for 20p. Never seen one like it, never got tired of it.

@LightSwerve

I could do, but it was a lovely painting we wanted before I looked it up, plus, I've been donating to them monthly by DD since 1999 so I think I'll keep it :-)

My dress for my daughter's wedding. Had been looking in the shops at dresses priced at £200, none of which I liked. The next day I walked past a charity shop and saw it in the window. £20 from Phase Eight, looked good and fitted me well!

I was looking for a book by Peter Ackroyd called London the Biography.
Big book and has a RRP of £14.99

Happened to be in a local(ish) part of my area I don't usually go too and noted a Charity shop.
Went in and found the Book . £2.50.

Duck down puffa coat from a Norwegian brand. £12.99. New with tags.
Goggled and they are £200 plus new.

I found a designer red velvet blazer that was marked at £4 in immaculate condition. It was in the CRUK shop. A quick google told me it retailed for a grand so I told them. I've had cancer and I would have felt guilty buying it. It should have been a gold label item on eBay where it did in fact end up.

I also bought a pair of new shoes for a fiver in a different store. Later found out they retailed for £800.

RabbitsRock · 12/01/2024 18:58

Loads of great bargains over the years but probably my best was a full length midnight blue sparkly dress, cut low at the back. It was designer, fitted me like a glove & cost £5!

Solonomi · 12/01/2024 19:02

Why should the OP give it back? Charity shops are for bargains for gods sake. why does someone always jump onto a post and kill the joy.
Enjoy OP!!! You did good 👍

Our local hospice charity shops sells loads of dresses donated by Jane McDonald.. she supports the Hospice here in Wakefield.
But only best buy I've bought was some Clarks boots. Retail price was £165.
I paid a tenner 5 years ago and still wear them.
I prefer a good Car boot.

Forgot the G Plan coffee table I found for £15 in 2001. I loved it. When we had kids lent it to my BIL as it had glass in the top. He chucked it when he moved flat. Now worth £395.

Decafflatteplease · 12/01/2024 19:58

My wedding dress!

Brand new still with £1000 tag attached. £150!

Absolutely loved it.

skkyelark · 12/01/2024 20:13

Not expensive, but a very specific mug I wanted as a gift for my husband. A colleague from a previous job (before I met DH) had had one, and I knew DH would love it...but I had no idea where I was going to find one. Walked into my favourite local charity shop and there it was waiting for me!

TeabySea · 12/01/2024 20:17

Moshoulu boots for £35, which normally retail at around £120.

Mrsjayy · 12/01/2024 20:19

a Harris tweed bag for a tenner unfortunately the buckle has now.broken . I know they are not expensive but I thought it was a bargain, I never go into charity shops.

Take it to Timpsons! They may be able to repair it.

oh maybe I didn't even think of there, thank you.

I bought a tea cup, saucer and side plate from a local charity shop for £5. I saw it was stamped on the bottom and that it had come from Stoke on Trent. Did some research and found it was actually over £100 years old! Only worth what I paid for it really, but it doesn't matter. The items come from a tea set of six placings. They made a tea pot, sugar bowl etc to match at the time, but they are rare now.

DD is good at finding bargains. She found a lovely skirt from Hobbs, slightly customised, for a tenner recently.

NerrSnerr · 12/01/2024 20:48

I got some new Timberland boots for £8 recently. I also got a full sized Emma Bridgewater mug for 50p, that one was from a shop that usually EBays more expensive things but it was one commemorating Harry and Meghan's wedding so I assume the volunteer wasn't a fan.

Beachcomber · 12/01/2024 21:00

Not charity shop but Vinted.

Bought a lovely and very practical big handbag / work bag for £15.

Original Inès de la Fressange that retails at about £450.

Thought it must be a fake / mistake but it arrived in beautiful condition with dust bag, etc and the seller sent a message saying they knew it was worth a lot but they didn't use it and just wanted it to go to a good home.

Use it every day and it makes me happy 😊

QueSyrahSyrah · 12/01/2024 21:04

Recently I've had a gorgeous Hobbs wrap dress for £8 and a Volcom branded parka that was originally £185 for £15.

I'm new charity shopping but taking inspiration from my friend who is amazing at finding gems!

Sybila · 12/01/2024 21:19
