Just posting this here in the hope that someone is able to advise.
My son (almost 8) has had a speech dysfluency since he was about 4 which means he repeats the middle or end sounds in words, like an echo.
I paid for private speech therapy, which didn't really help, and I have the option of help from an NHS SALT if I want- although whether they would actually be able to do anything about it I'm not sure.
Everything I've read says that children grow out of this eventually, but his speech just seems to be getting worse and worse. It's now at the point where I'm really struggling to understand what he's saying most of the time. He has been assessed as having a very low processing speed for his age, which I think is what is causing it.
He was previously unaware of it but, about a month ago, he made a video of himself talking and when we were watching the video back together he was asking why the video was so glitchy - then it dawned on him that that was just how he sounds. We had a chat about it but he got very upset and stormed off in tears. He now gets even more frustrated when we can't understand him because he knows the reason why and he can't do anything to make his speech more clear.
I know there are other MNers whose child has this type of dysfluency or has had it in the past. How long did it last for your child and was there anything you did to help? I have found decreasing demands and stress on him helped in the past, but tbh nothing much seems to help anymore. I'm worried he will end up getting teased at school for it.
