Wellies or walking boots for dog walking?

FloraMaguire · 11/01/2024 21:49

Pretty much as in the title! We’re getting a dog for the first time. I anticipate muddy chilly walks regularly. I currently have some very uncomfortable wellies or completely unwaterproof trainers so need a better option but wasn’t sure what to go for.

Will wellies be uncomfortable for long walks? Walking boots too open to water?

Muck boots, or proper full length country boots. Wellies are crap, cold and uncontrollable if you're out a lot.

Cotswoldbee · 11/01/2024 21:56

Where we live we can walk byways, hillsides, woodland and paths.
If we know we are taking a wet route we wear wellies but if it is nothing more than just boggy, my preference is for waterproof boots and gaiters.

Ddogs love it wherever we go, the muddier the better! 😁🐶

RandomMess · 11/01/2024 21:56

Hope your dog is like mine, hates the rain and mud 😂 she prefers pavement to the grass verges!

Not wellies, waterproof boots.

Thanks! In that case, any brand recommendations for waterproof boots that really are waterproof?

I suppose it depends where you'll be walking? For most walks I love my 'baby Barbours' - ankle high Barbour welly boots. Our dog will be 4 soon and I'm on my second pair, still going strong. They're comfy, waterproof & not too clunky.

Wellies (with thick warm socks) but decent wellies, crap ones you can feel every stone under foot.
You don't have to spend a fortune, decathlon do decent ones for less than £20, I mean not the fashion patterned ones from supermarkets/fashion clothes shops, from my experience they have flimsy soles.

chattyness · 11/01/2024 22:07

Depends which wellies or walking boots you buy there's so many different kinds of both isn't there. I loved my hi tech v lites waterproof walking boots they lasted me for years & I used them every day, but when I needed a new pair I couldn't get the exact same ones so I bought the same brand but slightly different waterproof boot, they lasted 5 minutes before the coating came off!
All you need to make wellies cosy is long thick socks. I've got grubs frostline which are great and my ariat burford wellies which are so supportive, but light and comfortable. I've also got a pair of cheap dunlops which have lasted years but very cold so again thick warm welly socks are a must for Winter! I've had hunters too but they're not as good quality as they once were & only lasted one season .

Peter Storm Snowden boots are the best money I have ever spent. Got our dog 7 years ago and these are just brilliant. Brown waterproof leather walking boots that re thermally insulated. I have never had a wet or cold foot wearing them and I can walking miles and miles in them . They’ve been up Snowden with the dog too!

TheDogsMother · 11/01/2024 22:10

Going against the flow here but I wear cheap Dunlop wellies (£14) with thick Mountain Warehouse socks.

Schoolrunmumbun · 11/01/2024 22:12

Walking boots are best but sometimes I cannot be bothered w laces and so just wear the pull on wellies. If all comes down to laziness levels.

Powerplant · 11/01/2024 22:13

I walk miles, all weather with my dog in the forest and my Karrimor leather walking boots are great. Waterproof with a good tread and keep my feet toasty, warm and dry. Not too expensive either - not pretty but who cares when they’re covered in mud. Think I got them from Sports Direct a few years ago and still going strong. Wellies give no support and are slippy.

OrlaHarper · 11/01/2024 22:14

Take a look at the Sorel Whitney boots. They're comfortable like trainers but completely waterproof and warm. I wear them on long wet walks and my feet are far happier than when I wore wellies. Enjoy your new dog!

Mumofyellows · 11/01/2024 22:15

I have 2 pairs of Aigle wellies, they are very comfy and really last. One pair is lined for the winter and the other is a bit thinner for spring/autumn. I have 2 labs and walk a lot, plus horses and they are fab. I also have a pair of nice country boots for drier days that looks smart for a pub stop mid walk! For spring I have shorter brown leather walking type boots (Shires Moretta Octavia boots) which I wear in warmer weather, and in summer I wear trainers!

Habbibu · 11/01/2024 22:16

I have mammal snow boots at the moment and they are brilliant. I wouldn't say they are completely waterproof as in when I've stepped in the sea in them I feel a hint of damp but they are brilliant in the fields and woods around our house, and down at the beaches. They are incredibly comfortable and cosy and also obviously good for ice and snow.

LessonsLearnedInLife · 11/01/2024 22:18

I wear country boots most of the year.

raynauldsfoot · 11/01/2024 22:18

I also have grubs frostline! @chattyness

Super comfy and warm, thick sole great for my Plantar fasciitis

Husband has grubs snowline, some innov8 low boots, scarpas and vivobarefoot

He does most dog walking

In the winter he need higher boots as if not he get wet ankles. He loves his new vivos and they are beautiful

Says he can walk fast in the grubs but I can. (Think he l walks very fast with dog tho, unlike me 🐌 )

Whiskeypowers · 11/01/2024 22:18

What breed of dog are you getting?

raynauldsfoot · 11/01/2024 22:18

Says he can't walk fast in grubs I meant

Riverlee · 11/01/2024 22:20

Walking shoes for me.

Hes a bit of a mix but closest to a labradoodle

Muck Boots. I’ve had dogs for 20+ years and my Muck Boots have been my
favourite boots. I also wear them with a Dry Robe to watch the kids footie matches and I’m rarely cold.

That would be Muck boots as mentioned by another poster upthread. They are like wellies but fit like a boot with appropriate ankle support etc. I love mine - consistently warm, dry feet

SummerSazz · 11/01/2024 22:24

I hate wellies and currently am wearing walking boots but I live and walk near the top of a hill so no big mud issues. I used to wear pull on sheepskin lined Ecco boots which were amazing but I can't find similar replacements now.

Will be looking at some of the other recommendations on here!!

LimitIsUp · 11/01/2024 22:26

I wear these muckbootcompany.co.uk/collections/ankle-boots/products/mens-chore-classic-chelsea-boots-black (I don't care they are designated 'mens')

Ah well I have an almost twelve year old spaniel who isn’t keen on an urban rainy walk but will still happily walk (mostly off lead) for at least an hour across most terrains.
i have walked her in wellies but found karrimoor walking boots much better.

Enjoy your dog!
