Wellies or walking boots for dog walking?

Pretty much as in the title! We’re getting a dog for the first time. I anticipate muddy chilly walks regularly. I currently have some very uncomfortable wellies or completely unwaterproof trainers so need a better option but wasn’t sure what to go for.

Will wellies be uncomfortable for long walks? Walking boots too open to water?

Another vote for Muckboots. I bought my first pair in the first week I had my first dog. I walked hundreds of miles in them over the years, and they were always brilliant. My beautiful girl died when she was 15 years old but my boots kept going for a few more years after that. Well worth the money - warm, sturdy, waterproof.

Also, as well as decent wellies, for early morning wet grass type of walks I love my Nike Gortex trainers on days that you would wear jeans/leggings and trainers. They are great and also great on the beach. Keep your feet perfectly dry and I can walk for miles and miles in them.

Another Muck Boot fan here. I have walking trainers I wear in summer, but wear my Muck Boots the rest of the time. As PP have said, they provide proper support whilst being 100% waterproof. And given the recent weather they have been a godsend for wadding through the mid and puddles on walks recently. I have an Arctic pair for winter as I get cold feet. So comfy and as PP have said, easier than messing about with laces.

I have a pair of trespass boots. I wore them all the time for about 3 years to walk the dog twice a day then they split at the sole. Since then I've bought an identical pair and stilll have them

I agree with muck boots (type of wellie). Mine were so comfortable and warm, even when walking in snow.

AppleTreeOwner · 11/01/2024 22:53

Don’t have a dog but spend a lot of time in wellies / walking boots due to muddy gardening.
I always replace the inner soles of any wellies with trainer inner soles and it makes a massive difference to comfort. I find welly boots have very flat inner soles which after time can make feet ache. Muck boots tend to have a wider fit than some cheap wellies.

I hate wellies and how they feet. Walking boots and gaiters if it's really mucky.

The person who said they are in their second pair of barbours in 4 years have been robbed. My walking boots lasted over 10 years. Look after them and they will look after you.

I like Salomon.

poetrylover · 13/01/2024 17:45

I also have Salomon walking trainers that are waterproof and I wear them every day.

Flylikeabirdinthesky · 13/01/2024 17:46

Muckboots.
Spendy but you won't regret it.
I do 3 walks a day over fields and woodland with a very energetic GSD and I would honestly rescue my Muckboots in a house fire.

Wellies every time. Quick and easy to get on and off. I have aigle parcours which aren't cheap but offer the comfort of a walking boot with the ease of a welly. Perfect!

LizzieSiddal · 13/01/2024 18:00

It depends on your area.
In summer we wear walking boots. In winter we need wellies as some areas near water etc, get flooded and you definitely need wellies, and warm thick socks.

ToothFairy2023 · 13/01/2024 18:19

I have had both wellies and boots. When our dog was younger I bought some good quality comfortable to walk in and slightly insulated Aigle mens wellies and wore these most of the year. They are pricey but after a few years mine cracked on the back and they sent me a free replacement pair. In the summer months I wore approach shoes similar to these. Now I just wear shoes similar to these Merrell shoes year round and I don’t wear wellies. https://www.merrell.com/UK/en_GB/moab-3-gore-tex/52985W.html

I live in the countryside, lots of muddy field walking and I live in my short harbour wellies.

Serencwtch · 13/01/2024 18:25

I've got horses, dogs & some sheep so do a lot of muddy walking. In winter I just wear wellies. Lechameu are currently the trendy ones but I just have muck boots & DH wears Dunlop .
When it's less muddy ankle length Ariat boots.

Peter Storm Snowden boots are the best money I have ever spent. Got our dog 7 years ago and these are just brilliant. Brown waterproof leather walking boots that re thermally insulated. I have never had a wet or cold foot wearing them and I can walking miles and miles in them . They’ve been up Snowden with the dog too!

These look good. Can I ask about the laces - are they easy to loosen/tighten? I’ve got some Timberlands that are great in all respects EXCEPT the laces take forever to loosen and tighten.

The best boots I ever had in that regard were Ugg Ostranders that had “speed” laces. They were amazing.

Floralnomad · 13/01/2024 18:27

When it’s really muddy I wear Dublin river boots , when it’s not so bad I wear short yard boots like Woof wear .

longtompot · 13/01/2024 18:29

I wear both. Grub wellies for very wet days and Timberland waterproof leather walking boots for the drier ones. In the summer I wear Karrimor walking trainers. I wouldn't rely on one pair of footwear for walking as if they get wet you need to get them dried before the next one, plus it does help them last better if you have more than one pair.

Towelrail · 13/01/2024 18:30

Both. Wellies for deep muddy fields and walking boots for when it's not too bad. I've just dug my muckboots out for the school run last week and they've shredded my heels though, not impressed and vaguely remember they do this with some socks. I'll use walking boots for the rest of the year now as I can't go through this agony again!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/01/2024 18:53

I have both, and reach for Muck Boots 9 times out of 10 for dog walking.

LER83 · 13/01/2024 19:50

I will never admit this to my dh, but I bought some very expensive ariat boots, which admittedly are very warm and waterproof, but I actually prefer my cheap Dunlop wellies with thick socks! Have walked miles in them and 2 years later still going strong! I only wear my Ariats now when its raining heavily as they are taller then my wellies and my coat goes over the top of them!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 13/01/2024 22:06

Peter Storm ones are fine, and comfortable.
