Paracetamol flavours

Hello,

I'm really struggling to find a cold flu medicine my 8yo is happy to take.

He hates the strawberry and orange flavoured ones. I actually think a plain tablet he just swallows would be best for him. But I can't find any which is appropriate until he's 12.

Calpol fast melts are good, but he hates the flavour. Any suggestions?

Break a tablet in half to get the right dose? Check the dose by googling. For paracetamol tablets I mean, you can’t give anything with a decongestant in.

KnickerlessParsons · 11/01/2024 18:59

You can buy soluble paracetamol tablets that you could add squash or juice or other flavouring to.

Mumaway · 11/01/2024 18:59

There's nothing useful in most cold and flu medicine except the paracetamol. Just give him half a paracetamol tablet.

I don’t understand why he couldn’t take a tablet, so long as it was the correct dosage. Or a water soluble one like panadol (again, check the dosage)

Yes, there is, decongestant! But you can’t give those to under 12s, which is why the OP needs to take a paracetamol tablet and break it in half.

A fast melt has 250mg of paracetamol so you could break a 500mg tablet in half to get the correct dose. They often have a groove down the middle

yourturn · 11/01/2024 19:06

Anti-histamines instead of decongestant???

sammielouise · 11/01/2024 19:08

Some Pharmacies do a cherry flavour - I think boots so too? It a cheap brand! Might help?

user1480111163 · 11/01/2024 21:17

I was thinking of half a paracetamol 250mg must be a reason why they don't allow it on packages though

What do you mean they don’t allow it on packages?
They often have a line for breaking them. The back I have gives the dose.

dementedpixie · 11/01/2024 21:31

Other packets don't give the dosage for younger children. Maybe they don't have a score line to half them or its too much info for the packet

Oldraver · 11/01/2024 21:31

DS was taking medicine in tablet form from a young age so if he ever needed paracetamol around your DC's age, he had a tablet

I just worked out the dose for his weight (he was quite small for his age) and yes as others have said half a tablet was used

user1480111163 · 11/01/2024 22:25

That's the first package I've seen with that kind of information. Thanks whoes brand is it?

Sainsbury’s. But you can just google the dosage and apply that to any brand.

Or use this, scroll down.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/01/2024 22:32

We have a cherry flavour one at work. That one goes down quite well. But it's the. Standard 120mg/5ml. So more volume that 6+

Toddlerteaplease · 11/01/2024 22:33

Half a paracetamol is 5ml
Of calpol 6+ so he can have a tablet. How much does he weigh?

ThreeTreeHill · 11/01/2024 22:35

Under 1/2 a tablet is probably too difficult to be accurate therefore they won't say give a quarter tablet to a 4yo, as you can't accurately divide into 4 and risk giving too higher a dose. But 6 and up can have half a tablet.

At 8 he can easily have half a tablet. Just do that. Brand doesn't matter as long as its just paracetemol
