I've exceeded the storage in my Hotmail a/c and can't use it! Is there a good tool for removing the crap emails!

I never delete anything! I know that's not good.

I don't want to just delete everything. Is there a clever app or tool I can use to make this task less painful!

Thanks

Start with emptying your spam folder, then your sent folder. That will probably create quite a lot of space, then empty the deleted folder too!

Namenamchange · 10/01/2024 22:47

You can highlight a few email
at a time and then sweep, it will remove all emails with the same address. Took me about 30 to get it back to 97 percent so I could use it again.
you need to empty the bin too.

Namenamchange · 10/01/2024 22:48

you can also filter then by size, just deleting 2/3 big emails opened up enough space to function.

Clean fox app - changed my life! It’s like playing a game. Also check there is nothing else taking up storage. My google account got blocked because I was also using it for photo storage. And meant emails couldn’t get through. Maybe you have some large files or images saved on the account?

Teenagersscarethelivinshitoutofme · 10/01/2024 22:50

There probably is but I don't know what. However, when this happened to me recently, every evening when I was just sitting in front of the TV I went through folders deleting things from before 2018 as a start, like phone bills and Amazon receipts etc, obv not important things. Freed up loads easily. Delete everything in junk and empty your deleted folder too. Delete anything you don't need that has large attachments.

Morwenscapacioussleeves · 10/01/2024 22:52

Sort by size & Chuck a few big emails
search for "unsubscribe" & then sit with your finger on delete!

Whataretheodds · 10/01/2024 22:53

Empty spam
Filter by size
Search for messages containing the word "unsubscribe"

GoalHitter2024 · 10/01/2024 22:53

Use a laptop or desktop and you can use the sweep function. Sweeps everything from a certain sender into trash.

It's hugely satisfying, I had about 5000 emails once and I got it down to under 1000 in about 20 minutes.

Thanks, just downloaded that, looks good.

@CellarCaller search for the rubbish email and delete them a page at a time. empty the deleted folder everytime. I have 68000 unread emails apparently. used to able to go to the oldest page or even the older year but that facility is no longer available sadly

Sunflower8848 · 10/01/2024 23:32

Just start using a new email address! Gmail is better.

FiftyNotNifty · 11/01/2024 00:06

How do you use the sweep function?

Colinorpercy · 11/01/2024 00:10

Omg I’m so glad I’m not the only one living life on the Hotmail edge like this! If you go into the desktop version of it you can type something you want rid of loads of e.g Wowcher, then there’s a button that says sweep and it will delete everything from Wowcher in one go. It’s tremendous, I just go through various things I’m subscribed to in that way. Then remember to empty your deleted items folder once you’ve done it. Sometimes takes a while due to the volume.

Grimchmas · 11/01/2024 00:21

Use a browser on a desktop, it has more functionality.

Create a folder "needs attention YOURNAME". Spend 5 minutes looking through the last 20 days and moving anything that needs your attention to there.

Then move everything from your inbox into the archive. Your should have an empty inbox.

Go to the archive, and sort by file size. Delete from biggest down the list.

Sort by sender, then unsubscribe from any senders you no longer want to hear from, then mass delete all emails from them.

I move the "needs attention" ones back into my inbox when I finish.

CellarCaller · 11/01/2024 00:54

I've deleted all the large files and deleted 33% of the total number of emails using Sweep and CleanFox but it still says my storage is full at 5GB!
I have emptied the 'Deleted Items' folder many times.

Help!

You can get extra storage for £1.99 a month! I did that and now going through and deleting in my own time whilst being able to finally recieve emails

shreknjumps · 11/01/2024 01:41

Following for a time when I can be arsed to delete 30k emails 🤣

skyeisthelimit · 11/01/2024 02:00

I sort by sender and delete huge chunks at a time , it doesn’t take too long.

DPotter · 11/01/2024 03:13

On the first page of your emails, find a frequently occurring email address. Then go to the search bar and type in this emailer. Then selected all of the emails and delete them. Rinse & repeat. I would also unsubscribe from senders too to keep your inbox clearer.

I have to say my heart sinks when customers give me a hotmail email address - I have so many bounce backs from them

penjil · 11/01/2024 03:50

Delete everything in the "sent" folder.

Mine had every email sent from about 1998!

Lurkingandlearning · 11/01/2024 04:37

I use gmail and outlook and can sort into date order with the oldest at the top. If you can do that on Hotmail it is very quick to delete ancient emails probably without even opening them. I just decided if they were over x years old they were either already dealt with or out of date

Lurkingandlearning · 11/01/2024 04:38

Did that with both sent and received

Using CleanFox 30k can be deleted in a few minutes

I had this recently. Check your sent folder. 90% of my storage was just used on that. Deleted everything in there & now works again.
Think you have to go into settings & do it from there not just from your sent box
