My son who is doing A levels turns 18 in Feb. Do I need to tell HMRC so I continue to receive Child Benefit? He'll go to Uni in Aautumn.

Do I need to tell HMRC or will they contact me? How do I do this?
Will he continue to get Child Benefit when he goes to Uni in autumn?
It's a bit confusing!

I would like to know this too. I think it stops at 18? But some one else will know.

No, you don’t usually need to contact them & no, you don’t get child benefit once they leave school for university.

You will have had a letter towards the end of the school year when they turned 16 asking about continued education, which you presumably completed to say they were doing so.
The child benefit should continue until the end of the school year (end Aug) in which they turn 18 assuming they finish education at that point.

You won't get it when they go to uni.

My DC is a late August birthday but in a deferred school year. We received a form to fill in in advance of his birthday to confirm he had another year in full time education. It confirms entitlement to child benefit

Paid until 31st August the year they turn 18 unless repeating a year or foundation at 6th form or college:

Yes, we got this too. I think we only got a second letter because my DC is in a deferred year

Thank you all for your replies.

It will end automatically in September unless you declare he’s still at 6th form (eg resat a year)
