Something just happened and I have no explanation for it

Six years ago I was in Belfast (I live in the North of England) and I lost my debit card, I cancelled the card and got a new one. I know for a fact I lost it there because it was in my purse (It was my only card and the one I had been using on my trip to Belfast) and I left my bag on a bus and never got it back.

Today I had a new couch and chair delivered, When the delivery guys left I took the seat cushions off the couch (It’s the kind you can move the cushions and swap them around etc) and there was a debit card there, Picked it up and its the exact one I lost in Belfast six years ago.

Never even sat on this couch yet so it’s not like it fell out of my pocket, because I don’t have any pockets and I don’t have the same clothes I had six years ago, Since losing the card I have decorated my entire flat, All the rooms were empty with no furniture etc as I got it all done room by room, The couch arrived today and the debit card was in the couch.

I’m trying to figure out how this happened and to be honest I'm stumped!

Anything strange like this happened to someone else? Did you ever figure it out?

Similar happened to me once op! I went to Canberra in Australia and bought a souvenir bracelet, I lost it while there (assuming it fell off my wrist). A few years later I found it in a drawer in my house.

This reminds me of another thread I read on here. A woman had received a signed photo of a celebrity in her youth, it had been signed with a very specific customised message and so there wasn't another one like it in the world. It had been lost for many years, through house moves, redecorations, etc. One day she bought a brand new household item from Dunelm or similar and the photo was inside! I know someone could easily invent a story like this, but there was something about the specificity and mundanity of the details that made me believe it. It stuck in my mind because of how much it would freak me out of it happened to me, I'm definitely not one of those people who could shrug and move on and be rational about it lol.

That’s an amazing story!

I had a diamond bracelet that I paid £1.2k and rather than keep it boxed away I decided to wear it everyday…until I lost it. I was gutted. Retraced my steps, went to the shops, post office etc etc. fast forward 5 years and my washing machine was making an odd noise so my son said to open the waste pipe at the front. I look at him like he was stupid because the noise wasn’t coming from there but I did it anyway to settle his curiosity…the bracelet popped out on opening - I could t believe it! I have never worn it since ha ha!

The exact same thing happened to my mum many years ago with her wedding ring! Lost for months then popped out the washing machine just the same way!

I think there was someone on here who said they donated a dress to Oxfam in the UK, still with the tag on - and something like a handwritten note on the tag from them saying donate. They were on holiday a couple years later in Australia, and walked into a second hand store, saw what looked like the dress - and it was the same dress.

Tis a small world and full of weird coincidences..

IIdentifyAsInnocent · 09/01/2024 18:35

I have a few phone number related coincidences. As a kid we had a landlines for 15 years. We moved to the opposite side of town and the new number we were randomly assigned had 1 digit difference. Eg. The old number was 123456 and the new number was 133456.

More recently, I interviewd someone and had to ring them to offer them the post. Went to applicantion for, started typing in their number, only to think, hang on, how have they put my personal number in here? Double check and once again there is one digit difference. Mine was 07999123456 and theirs was 07990123456 (obvs not actually the number). It was so freaky. She is from another part of the UK and we are on different networks!!

Weird coincidences do happen.

Not the same but a couple of years ago my son threw my debit card behind the sofa o watched it fly through the air and go behind the sofa. I got up right away to get it and it wasn't there. Like at all, checked everywhere to the point I thought I was cracking up it absolutely disappeared. Cut to two years later and many times pulling out the sofa to clean behind in between, we were moving and I moved the sofa to take it out and there was my debit card, poking sideways out from behind the miniscule gap in the skirting board. How did it get in? How did it get back out?

I vaguely remember that too. Wasn't it at the bottom of a laundry basket?

It must be bank cards that are susceptible to disappearing/reappearing. Around 20 years ago our joint account debit cards arrived ready to be activated before the old ones expired. I opened them and placed them propped up just inside our bureau to remind us to activate. DH arrives home from work and I go to hand him his card but they've gone. We searched high and low, methodically checking everywhere even though they were only in the bureau. I admitted defeat and cancelled them a few days later, new ones arrived, all good. About 3 years later I went to put some paperwork in the bureau and there in front of me were the 2 missing debit cards, plain as day. Not concealed but just where I propped them years before. 😱 A few years after that I picked up a urine specimen bottle(exciting stuff) from my dad's doctors on my way home from work and the plan was to cook the tea then visit dad, taking him the bottle. I'd put it in the bureau ready to grab on my way out. It was gone, never to return. That bureau is now in the garage holding various tools etc but we never put anything we'll need in the near future in it, in fact we still say something like "don't put it in the haunted bureau,I'll want it later in the week". Just in case.

Did you ever get the urine specimen back? 🤣

They can expand and contract in different temperatures can’t they? Or warp due to damp.

Has everyone missed the bit where the OP made it all up and legged it?

Magnoliasunrise · 09/01/2024 19:02

I was hoping OP finds out they make new sofas out of old bus seats in Belfast..

Thriving30 · 09/01/2024 19:03

Very strange!

bearfood · 09/01/2024 19:04

I have one of these stories! Went on holiday in the UK so took blankets in case it got chilly at night in the caravan. One of the blankets is beloved by all of us. Kids fight over 'the cream blanket'. Get home from holiday and cream blanket is nowhere to be seen. We all bemoan the fact that is was left in the caravan then move on with life.
Months later I get fed up with blankets lying around the living room as it's now winter and everyone likes to use blankets on the sofas. The disappearance of the cream blanket continues to be lamented by us all, like a long missed old friend. In the January sales I bought a laundry basket type thing to store them in and shive in the cupboard when not being used. Summer rolls around again and the blankets all get packed away in it.
Autumn rolls around and I get the blankets out of the box one chilly September afternoon and what do I find? The cream blanket, the same cream blanket that wasn't there when I bought the laundry basket, not when I packed blankets away or got them out regularly.
We are all still baffled.

that's v v weird

not as weird but bank card related

DH has had the same PIN since it was auto-issued about a thousand years ago. when we got DD her first account they sent the card and PIN it was the same as DH's (different banks, unconnected accounts).

I'm no mathematician but i'd be interested in the odds of that

One in ten thousand!

Love all these stories! People are either all making them up or our "reality" really is much stranger than we can ever imagine.

Did you ever get the urine specimen back? 🤣

Luckily it was an empty bottle on its way to my dad's to be "filled" not full and on its way via me to the Dr's! Nope, disappeared into the ether never to be seen again.17 years and counting .....

Hi everyone - just to make you aware that the OP has since left the site and so those hanging on for an update will sadly be disappointed. Of course, there's always the possibility that OP has been swallowed whole by their glitch-in-the-matrix couch, and will pop out, six years later, in a random DFS.

I heard a coincidence recounted on a podcast recently, but even that possibly pales into ‘meh’ compared to this.

A man is in a petrol station paying for his fuel when the petrol station phone rings. The woman on the till picks it up and says ‘No, sorry. There’s nobody called Dave Harris on this number.’

Before she puts the phone down, the man paying for fuel jokily says to the till lady ‘I’m called Dave Harris! Who is it?’

The woman on the other end of the phone hears and says ‘Tell him it’s Katie, his secretary!’

So the till lady, confused, hands Dave the phone, and it is indeed his secretary calling.

Dave: ‘How did you know I was here?’ Katie: ‘I just rang your home phone number from your personnel file!’
Dave: ‘But this isn’t my home phone number!’
Katie: ‘Oh! I’ve got confused. I’ve seen your employee number and rung that!’

Katie rang Dave’s employee number, which turned out not only to be a working phone number, but the exact random place that Dave was at that precise moment.

So the question now is… Does Katie now work for DFS?

As a teenager 40 years ago, I was in the next town. I walked past a phone box and it was ringing. As kids did back then, I went in and answered it. It was my best friend calling me. She'd dialed my home number but pressed one wrong digit, making it the number for that random phone boxid gone into!.

InAMess2023 · 09/01/2024 19:30

Three similar experiences of mine...

Lost a Tiffany earring. Moved house, gutted the place, no sign. Walked into new house one day and saw it on the shelf as soon as I walked in the door. No one else who helped me move had found it either.

Lost sunglasses on a flight home from Turkey... got train home from airport. Claimed on travel insurance. Found sunglasses two weeks later... in my car!

Found a random football badge on a chair in London hotel room... had just been to the football but didn't own or buy a badge. Was no way if could have been overlooked earlier and just happened to be the same team we'd been to watch (and who my dad supported who's ashes are buried there)

I WISH I had some logical explanation for any of these but I genuinely genuinely don't...

A very similar experience happened to my parents, it was a mega coincidence that has now become family lore.
