Something just happened and I have no explanation for it

Six years ago I was in Belfast (I live in the North of England) and I lost my debit card, I cancelled the card and got a new one. I know for a fact I lost it there because it was in my purse (It was my only card and the one I had been using on my trip to Belfast) and I left my bag on a bus and never got it back.

Today I had a new couch and chair delivered, When the delivery guys left I took the seat cushions off the couch (It’s the kind you can move the cushions and swap them around etc) and there was a debit card there, Picked it up and its the exact one I lost in Belfast six years ago.

Never even sat on this couch yet so it’s not like it fell out of my pocket, because I don’t have any pockets and I don’t have the same clothes I had six years ago, Since losing the card I have decorated my entire flat, All the rooms were empty with no furniture etc as I got it all done room by room, The couch arrived today and the debit card was in the couch.

I’m trying to figure out how this happened and to be honest I'm stumped!

Anything strange like this happened to someone else? Did you ever figure it out?

When i was first married ( last century) my then husband and i opened a joint account and i was issued a PIN number, kept that number for 15 years. When i realised that i was going to divorce him i opened a new account in my own name with a different banking group and received my new PIN, it was exactly the same as my old one.

I heard a coincidence recounted on a podcast recently, but even that possibly pales into ‘meh’ compared to this.

A man is in a petrol station paying for his fuel when the petrol station phone rings. The woman on the till picks it up and says ‘No, sorry. There’s nobody called Dave Harris on this number.’

Before she puts the phone down, the man paying for fuel jokily says to the till lady ‘I’m called Dave Harris! Who is it?’

The woman on the other end of the phone hears and says ‘Tell him it’s Katie, his secretary!’

So the till lady, confused, hands Dave the phone, and it is indeed his secretary calling.

Dave: ‘How did you know I was here?’ Katie: ‘I just rang your home phone number from your personnel file!’
Dave: ‘But this isn’t my home phone number!’
Katie: ‘Oh! I’ve got confused. I’ve seen your employee number and rung that!’

Katie rang Dave’s employee number, which turned out not only to be a working phone number, but the exact random place that Dave was at that precise moment.

So the question now is… Does Katie now work for DFS?

This is weirdly similar to a story I saw years ago on daytime TV — but in that instance, it was an AA/RAC man walking past a public phone box, etc etc. The man was on the show (something like LOOSE WOMEN or Richard & Judy) talking about it in a segment on coincidences. I’ve posted it before on here — but I’m now wondering if it was a hoax/urban myth…

Wasn’t there a thread on here not so long ago about someone who found something of hers/her mum’s — maybe a photo? — in her brand new linen basket?

Wow, that is weird. My only weird experience is years ago my DF was waiting for an important letter from his oncologist, it never arrived and it then arrived at my place of work (had my dads address on it but was misdirected to my office, same district but what are the chances of me going through the post at work to see a letter my dad had been waiting for in the mail bag) sometimes weird things happen. Glad you have it back, but guess its expired now. Is it possible that when they brought it in the card that was maybe in the hallway hidden by the skirting boards or similar got caught up as they lifted the sofa, although that doesnt explain how it was under a cushion.

That is mental !

Thank you so much. I’ve always wondered and I could have googled I guess but there you go

DD has a weird streak, odd things do happen to her so I’ll make sure she keeps her wallet close if she ever goes to Belfast

We had the same recently. I got a new card, and was suprised when it was the same pin I had for my very first debit card years ago!

until my mum applied for the same card a few months later, and during the online application you choose your own pin.

i had completely blanked that out and have no recollection of that being on the application form!

RosaMoline · 09/01/2024 15:26

The only odd thing that’s ever happened to me:
I used to work in a cinema/theatre box office that was situated in a shopping centre.
We were having a quiet spell, so some of us being true crime buffs, my colleagues and I were discussing the Manson murders.
whilst we were talking over, the shopping centre’s music system started playing ‘Helter Skelter’ by The Beatles!
It was doubly weird, as the centre usually played fairly modern R&B, pop genres, and Helter Skelter is definitely not known as one of the Beatles well known tracks.
Helter Skelter and The White Album it was featured on, allegedly inspired Manson to instruct his cult followers to commit those terrible murders.
It did freak us out somewhat at the time!

The posts about the lady who lost her ironing board in her house and a more recent one about the lady whose Grandmother Clock chains and weights vanished live rent free in my head.

Maybe they'll reappear again in the future saying they've reappeared inside a sofa!

You lost a different debit card down your old couch that you’ve forgotten about, new sofa men found it on your old couch when moving it popped it down on your new couch to give back to you and then forgot themselves so threw the new cushion on top?#

This, whilst also unlikely, is just about plausible and the most likely explanation.

StoorieHoose · 09/01/2024 15:29

the sofa delivery man aren't going find an old card down a sofa then put it back down the new sofa!! they would put it on the side or hand it over

Issueatwork · 09/01/2024 15:30

They could’ve just quickly popped it down for a moment whilst they had their arms full! Or maybe I’m clutching haha

Worriedsick78 · 09/01/2024 15:31

When I was a little girl, my sister and I had a dollhouse. There was a tiny (a third of the size of your little finger) baby in a crib. It was made out of a rubbery material. My sister dug her nails into it and its head came off. About ten years later, my parents were buying a building for a business. An old derelict school. As we were looking around, right in the middle of one of the rooms was the doll's tiny little head. Now, it must have been stuck on someone's clothing. It must have been. It can't have been a haunted head, but I will remember seeing it on the floor for the rest of my life.

Well that’s a batshit glitch in the matrix. 😳

This!

1 in 10,000. Not that short when you think how many PINs must be issued every day. Still, a nice little coincidence 🙂

Edited

The last 6 digits of my mobile phone number are the last 6 digits of my dad’s landline. That’s 1 in a million. Sadly I have not had any such luck with the lottery.

Are you testing this for reaction for your new Netflix script??
I promise to watch!

I will too but only if Richard Armitage is in it

What are the dates on the card?

Yes and we need a photo 😊

It's like something off Derren Brown.

Do you mean not true?

I lost a ring my parents got me for months. One day I reached into a pack of dried apricots and pulled out the ring. It must have slipped off when I last had an apricot!! Note to self, eat fruit more regularly

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 09/01/2024 15:40

Do you mean not true?

No, I didn't mean it's not true - just that I can't figure out how it could have happened.

zendeveloper · 09/01/2024 15:47

With the PIN matches, apart from pure statistical argument (similar to the "birthday paradox". the odds are higher than perceived even with a full randomisation), another explanation might be that banks could use a less randomised hash-type algorithm based, e.g., on the customer's surname or address to issue a default PIN value, hence relatives sometimes getting same PINs.

Blueblell · 09/01/2024 15:48

You need Jonathan Creek for this one.

WiddlinDiddlin · 09/01/2024 15:49

I lost a necklace my Mother gave to me circa 1996. I had it when I moved to my first house in the North West a few years later, then it vanished.

I found it in my Dads house in the West Midlands, under some card and crud, down the back of the U bend under the toilet, around 2019.

In that time, I had not been to my Dads house and whilst my sister had, she had not been to my house, nor had my Dad. It had not been dropped there recently either, it was under layers of crap.

I assumed I mistook the rough date it went missing but I found a photo of me wearing it, solidly dated to the time period where I didn't go there/they didn't come to mine... So i really don't know how! It is definitely the same necklace, its an unmistakable and unusual design from an independent jeweller circa 1960s.
