I have a colonscopy booked for tomorrow which is grim enough but my God the drink to clear things out is awful. I am only half way through my first one and I could honestly cry.

Any advice on how to get it down ? Every drink makes me feel I am going to vomit.

Feeling sad for myself .

I had to give myself an enema, any drink would be better than that

wtf?!?!? I feel so hard done by! Bet it’s a money thing. Horrendous!!

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 09/01/2024 09:57

Yep I knew what you were drinking before I opened this! I could never find anything that helped and after the last time said I would never be taking it again.
No help to you but sympathies

stayathomer · 09/01/2024 09:59

GettingStuffed
the instructions of the drink actually tell you what to do if you puke it up, it’s disgusting, and you drink a pint every half hour for most of the day!! But yes, sorry you had to go through that, it sounds awful x

mfhtoeh · 09/01/2024 10:00

Oooh I’m an expert in bowel prep. Which one do you have? Won’t be picolax as it’s a jug. Moviprep? Cleanprep? Plenvu?

I think picolax is the least offensive but also least effective. PlenVu is a winner for taste & strength.

I’ve had 5 rounds this year to clear a blockage and it’s only a week in!

Had well over 40 in the last 6 months.

They are disgusting and traumatic.

Tips:
Please please do not Wipe with loo roll. Ever. Use ideally ContiPlan wipes or incontinence wipes from Asda etc. that have an all in one approach with barrier cream. Back-up plan use baby wipes

Use nappy cream like bepanthan or even sudocrem on your butt hole after EVERY explosion. You will thank me later.

Wear adult nappies.

Tell everyone in your house it’s your bathroom for the day and not to use it under any circumstances.

Use chilled water. if you’ve made it up already, add some ice cubes.

Drink drink drink. Drink the litre of plain water too & then just keep going.

if you feel weak, i was allowed to drink clear apple juice & clear chicken broth. Check with your Dr.

It is revolting. You will feel sick. You will feel that Satan has taken residence in your guts, has spawned mini devilets in your bowels & that they are slowly destroying you and leaving your soul and body one by one in the most horrific manner.

However! It does end. Just persevere. Get it drunk within the time frame & you’ll have better success for the colonoscopy.

Just think if you don’t finish it and clear yourself out you will only have to repeat the process.

Please keep ontop of the bum hole maintenance- wipes and cream are ESSENTIAL

Good luck.

mfhtoeh · 09/01/2024 10:04

I prefer enemas. 10 mins and it’s all over.

Bowel Prep takes a day to do properly & is utterly exhausting.

I have to do 3-5 enemas a week and bowel prep every fortnight.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 09/01/2024 10:07

The first one I had was Picolax it was awful. I chilled the water which set my sensitive teeth off. I sent DH to the shops to get me some lemonade for the second dose.
I had to go through it again two years ago and it was something different. Moviprep? I thought it was just as bad to be honest. And to add insult to injury I had to take Senokot tablets at the same time.
Get some puppy pads to put on the seat of the car and Tena lady pads ‘just in case’. The nurse put me in a waiting cubicle with a toilet, didn’t need it but it was good to know it was there. Good luck op.

LaChienneDesFromages · 09/01/2024 10:09

mfhtoeh has given some excellent advice there.

I enjoyed that treat on Thursday before my colonoscopy on Friday. I had PlenVu this time, which I think was a slight improvement.

I always struggle to get bowel prep down. My best advice, is to chase it with something sour containing real sugar. Full sugar San Pellegrino works brilliant for me, and I only gagged a couple of times!

Eat loads of jelly babies (maybe not the purple ones) and dissolve an oxo cube in a mug for a soupy treat.

The other advice is to drink it really, really cold. I put mine in the freezer for three hours beforehand.

Then shut yourself away, put something easy to watch on Netflix wait the results, which really not as terrible as they are made out to be.

I find the revolting beige diet and fasting infinitely more challenging than the actual bowel prep. And it is all much harder than the colonoscopy itself, which was a breeze for me on Friday (actually quite good fun, as I was off my face on fentanyl flashing my bum to my daughter’s friend’s, dad, who turned out to be the endoscopist that day.)

The tea and biscuits they give you after the scope are the best, you’ll ever taste! best of luck.

I'm sorry to hear you're having to do this OP.
However, I did think this thread might be about Pernod or Southern Comfort Blush

😆 when I was in the throes of my bowel prep, DH said ‘ it could be worse, it could be that dreadful wine we had in Slovenia’.

Disclaimer – most Slovenian wine is really, really good.

Flatulence · 09/01/2024 10:15

I knew from the title that this was going to be about colonoscopy prep. No tips, just thoughts and prayers as it truly is rank.
If it's any consolation, the colonoscopy is a walk in the park in comparison to the lead-up - especially if you have a little sedation.

spiderlight · 09/01/2024 10:17

DO NOT GO TO THE SHOP!!! When it kicks in, it kicks in fast. I've had many of these, and the only way to make it bearable is very cold, with a straw, and a mouthful of lemonade afterwards.

https://singletrackworld.com/2009/02/the-picolax-thread-returns/ - this might give you a laugh while you're stuck on the loo.

CrepuscularCritter · 09/01/2024 10:21

Here in solidarity and to say you've been given great advice. If you can get a delivery today, wet loo wipes are good. Hope all goes well.

DameKatyDenisesClagnuts · 09/01/2024 10:33

It's vile and it's also ruined L'Occitane Verbena for me as they smell the same

MrsCarson · 09/01/2024 10:38

Mine was a three day prep process to be fair it was ages ago. Day one liquid diet only, so broth etc was fine. Day two clear liquids only, then Day three some god awful stuff to be taken with clear fluids over the day. I used Lemon lime soda. Made me gag. Day of colonoscopy another dose of the god awful prep then off to the hospital.
I did pass out on the bathroom floor at about 2am it all made me feel so ill.
If the smell is too bad, stick a bit of Vicks under your nose little and often. And chew minty gum.

hedgehoglurker · 09/01/2024 10:52

I don't use a straw as it takes so much longer to drink it. I advise having it very cold and try to chug it down while holding your nose to reduce the taste a little.

Elderflower14 · 09/01/2024 11:20

I read the title of your post and knew exactly what you would be drinking.
You have my sympathy. Vile filthy stuff!!

Newyearnewarse · 10/01/2024 06:34

Thank you for all your comments yesterday , it really was vile. Funnily enough the second one that I had been dreading as soon as I finished the first one was grim but I managed to drink it so much quicker.
Having the drink really really cold did help
I also didn't use a straw with the second one, I did find that easier for some reason.
The lack of food yesterday wasn't too big a deal , probably because the prep made me feel nauseous.
I got to bed about 1am and didn't get up until now. I had worried I would be up and down all night.
What I hadn't realised is because my procedure is at 9.30 I should have woken up before 5.30 if I wanted to drink this morning.
Now I just have to keep my fingers crossed for today. Should all be done by lunchtime.

Best of luck with your procedure today @Newyearnewarse
I "knew" from the title what this thread was about and I sympathise.
Thankfully you're over the worst now and if your procedure is this morning you'll be having a lovely cuppa in a few hours xx

Tilllly · 10/01/2024 06:41

I thought laxido was bad....

This sounds worse

All the medical advances, and they don't have the knowledge to make these things taste palatable?

LemonySippet · 10/01/2024 07:53

I knew what it was too from the title alone, you have my sympathies OP. I do hope today goes well, mine got delayed which meant I ended up going around 40 hours with no food 😭. That chicken sandwich and cup of tea I had on the other side was the best thing I ever tasted.

greenacrylicpaint · 10/01/2024 08:08

I suspect this vile prep is used because

  • it's cheap
  • it works in most cases

my consultant said that he prefers to prescribe a 3 day 'white' diet & picolax. but not everyone can manage that.

spiderlight · 10/01/2024 09:30

I hope it all goes well for you today. The procedure itself, while not exactly fun, is a doddle compared to the prep, and the tea and biscuits afterwards are heaven.

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 10/01/2024 11:06

I sympathise, it's horrific. I used to stop breathing through my nose, take a gulp then chase it down with a cold diet coke.

Make sure you stay in the hospital for a while afterwards or you may have diarrhoea on the say home.
