Uber or black cab in London?

Can anyone give a rough idea if Uber are still much cheaper than black cabs? Obviously will be journey dependent but trying to sort an early morning weekend journey from a train station and need to plan. Google is not my friend today..

I find there is often not much difference. Uber varies according to the weather etc.

if you want a booking that is sure to get you there, go for Addison Lee

Where do you need to get to and from? It might be quicker by bus or tube.

BeaRF75 · 08/01/2024 18:00

I always get black cabs. No question.

I travel to London very occasionally, but when I was travelling for work I ALWAYS took black cabs.
Lovely drivers, so very safe.

Will always use them!

Thanks I'd not heard of Addison lee, they're cheaper too. I think I'll go with them, I take it I can book in advance?

Sadly not quicker by tube due to the walking either end (have done the journey many times). Not checked bus which could be an option I guess.

You're better with a black cab in London.

User up their prices if its very busy or raining.

HappyHamsters · 08/01/2024 18:09

I get the bus now, they drive in the bus lanes and the traffic is pretty awful. What's the journey.

If you want to compare prices, download the FreeNow app. It’s like Uber for black cabs, and if you put your start and end point, it will give you an estimate. Obviously the exact price depends on traffic etc

But Addison Lee is a great shout. Much nicer cars and drivers than Uber but about the same price

Oh freenow is great! Just downloaded it and can see a black cab or pre-booked taxi likely to be cheapest!

I went from Paddington to Chelsea in a black cab as had a heavy suitcase and it was nearly £50 and on the way back was £23 in an uber... same time of day. Also used Uber while there. Much cheaper and I like the way the app works so you pay on the app and then after you have left they ask for quick feedback and a tip of nothing, £2 or £5 I think. The Ubers were mostly Mercedes and one ordinary car. Felt safe but was with a friend the whole time. They were friendly drivers. I had always used black cabs but the price difference has made me change.
