Going to Camden market soon for the first time in about 20 years. Looking for food suggestions. I’m a massive foodie so want to try as much as possible.
hit me with your suggestions….

@LittlePudding1 in my opinion the food carts were worse at Borough Market. The produce to take away is good, but the food there not so much.

The cheese wheel and the Argentinian steak place at the market near Dingwallls are def worth going, and although they are Instagram favs, food is still really good. Can't remember what the market is called, but it is before Dingwalls and before the bridge, it's is quite industrial by the lock and over three floors- in there is a fab Afghan place, and the Chimney Cake Lady who is always worth a visit.

I get it's touristy now and not cheap- still some pretty good food spots to try though.

Rusticanella · 08/01/2024 20:03

@tizalinatuna there is. But I think some of the others are better. They have the same type (cheese wheel etc) but I have a feeling at Buck Street they may all be owned by the same person, not sure. Should def try som others, I think the food is better, but that's me personally!

We used to, when we lived in London —but we were only pleasing ourselves, and got discounts as longtime regulars at some veg places (ie not Turnips’…), plus the produce was wonderful. That part of my life is looong over…

The food is indeed wonderful but it is eyewateringly expensive if you are talking about basic household staples. I do like Richard Hawards oysters opposite the market porter boozer though.

Bathtimebarbara · 08/01/2024 20:40

So many much much better places for food stalls in London

WhatsInStoreFor2024 · 08/01/2024 20:43

I'd swerve Camden entirely. It's scruffy and rundown now. And the market is mostly tat!

tizalinatuna · 08/01/2024 20:58

Buck St is expensive - I really discovered it under ‘eat out to help out’, outdoors, half price….! Nearby Poppy is expensive but good fish and chips. Maybe best to walk down to Kentish Town for some nice indie dent cafes etc, including one of the best ice cream shops in London: Caliendo’s Gelato.

Thighdentitycrisis · 08/01/2024 21:22

@tizalinatuna
please can you recommend any good independent places to eat in K Town ?

Rusticanella · 08/01/2024 21:41

@WhatsInStoreFor2024 I'm not sure how you can say THE market is full of tat. There are lots of different markets in different roads and different buildings selling lots of things.

Def not cheap things- but not tat.

I like Tonkatsu, Baan Thai, Phoenicia, Albion's, Bintang, Crepes and la Carte, Kami, Babuji. And Gregg's!

Why have so many people on this thread got a problem with tourists?

They're just people who aren't local Confused

VanillaImpulse · 09/01/2024 00:32

Camden is definitely not what it was, such a shame. Stalls just repeating themselves selling the same old cheap shit from China/Shein quality but expensive.
Took my daughter last summer and was not as I remembered at all! Did have some quite nice food overlooking the canal. Filled churros were sickly and overpriced.

VeganFromSveden · 09/01/2024 04:46

It's years since I visited Camden market too.
When I did go, it was always midweek, and when kids are at school.
On the subject of food at Camden, are the lots of plant based choices?
I see that lots of comments are saying that it's gone downhill, so if I wanted to visit a market that had variety, vibrancy and maybe something "different" about it, where would I try?
Thank you 🙏🏻

youegg · 09/01/2024 05:41

Ha. It's appalling now. Seriously awful. On a par with Leicester Square.

Brixton Village Market much better.

@spanishviola everywhere in London is heaving with people

This, sadly.

Even more so than 20 years ago.

Some places are marginally less busy than others and therefore tolerable. The best, least touristy food markets in Zone 1 are Spitalfields and Brick Lane.

Nitgel · 09/01/2024 06:29

You could walk op by the canal to coals drop yard, lots of eateries there.

Nitgel · 09/01/2024 06:32

I've only been to The Lighterman in coals drop yard, on dog day 😅was nice tho. https://www.kingscross.co.uk/eat-and-drink?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA1-6sBhAoEiwArqlGPquDL5fVW7LjAlHS0m7DalOeMCTGGQYpK64zCvdDNuR-5azreAII-xoCGjgQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Interesting place to visit from Camden.

LlynTegid · 09/01/2024 07:24

I also think don't bother, it has become an expensive tourist attraction, especially since part of it was redeveloped.

Because they're slow moving, stop too often and block the entire sidewalk

sashagabadon · 09/01/2024 07:32

It’s had a multi million pound facelift. It’s definitely not run down! Rundown is what the op is reminiscing about 😁

sashagabadon · 09/01/2024 07:34

You can do a nice walk from Paddington to King’s Cross along the canal stopping at Camden about half way. That can also be v busy but pick a cold wet miserable day and you’ll be more or less on your own!

rustlerwaiter · 09/01/2024 08:09

Visited last year with DS and DP and I was surprised how much it had changed since I was there about 15 years previous. Totally different place.
