Talk to me about buying a KitchenAid Stand Mixer

I cook a lot and currently use a 1970s Kenwood Chef. I've been given some money to treat myself and I think I want to get a new mixer.

I'm looking at this one

I don't care about the colour, I'm buying it to use and not as decoration!

Advice is appreciated from anyone who uses one.

Nice choice! I love mine. I would recommend getting an extra bowl though if you have storage space for one. They are pricey but you may find it useful.

Floopani · 07/01/2024 13:50

I have had mine for ten years now, used regularly, and it's still perfect. I would recommend to anyone. That's a nice colour too, I chose I bright purple one and it's not always matched the kitchen! Its so heavy, it's not the kind of thing you can easily put in and out of the cupboard.

BudgetFoodie · 07/01/2024 14:35

Thanks, it comes with two bowls, one is 4.8 L and the other is 3 L

Brand alley had some on sale the other day

TiaSeeya · 07/01/2024 14:55

I have one - had it about 8 years and use it all the time. It really is as good as new. Occasionally it gets a bit rattly and DH gets his screwdriver out and tightens it up a bit.

Houseplanter · 07/01/2024 14:59

I have exactly that OP. Love it and use it several times a week.

Makes excellent pastry as well as cakes. Always mash potatoes in it.

Lots of attachments available but they're expensive. I use my grater one a lot, but haven't bothered with any others.

OggyBunsen · 07/01/2024 14:59

I've had mine about 7 years and it's fantastic. My best subsequent buy was the grater add-on - I use it all the time for cheese. It gets through a block in seconds with no grated knuckle additions!

Houseplanter · 07/01/2024 15:02

As a pp has said they are very heavy, so you would probably want to leave it out.

pickledandpuzzled · 07/01/2024 15:03

Totally agree.

CluelessPadme · 07/01/2024 15:06

I’ve had mine about 15 years (maybe more) and although I don’t use it that often, I love it when I do. I have the gadget that fits on and shreds veg etc which is brilliant for making coleslaw

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 07/01/2024 15:12

Mine is 25+ years old now and still as good as the day I bought it.

PosyPrettyToes · 07/01/2024 15:13

Mine is about 15 years old and still good as new!

BudgetFoodie · 07/01/2024 15:16

I intend to leave it out on the worktop to use, it will just replace my ancient Kenwood.
I've found it on sale for £439 with a free gift of the grater attachment and a free hand blender.

I have the hand blender (a cordless one) and it's amazing. Best blender I've ever had.

Sounds like a good deal

HappyAsASandboy · 07/01/2024 18:25

I have had mine nearly 20 years and use it several times per week. As per another poster, sometimes it gets rattly (attachment clicking on the metal bowl or top bit moving on the base) and YouTube told me how to tighten screws to fix it.

The extra attachments like pasta roller/mince grinder etc are a lot more expensive than the Kenwood counterparts. Though it is a lot prettier, if you're not going to need to buy a lot of attachments!

Wictc · 07/01/2024 18:28

I sold mine as I don’t bake often (we are more of a savoury household), but when I did, the beater didn’t get to all the sides of the bowl so you had to stop and scrape.

It looked nice on the counter though!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 07/01/2024 18:32

8 years ago I was given some money for a mixer. I debated between KA and Kenwood. I eventually went with the Kenwood - not as pretty but an amazing workhorse. No regrets here

MentalLoadOverload · 07/01/2024 21:18

What’s wrong with your Kenwood?

FishPie2 · 07/01/2024 21:26

Don't wear a necklace when using your Kitchen Aid, my friend loves hers but twice has caught jewellery on the lever, the second time wasn't good. Now she has a notice taped to the machine to remind her.

BudgetFoodie · 07/01/2024 21:42

@mentaloverload
It has been a good servant for many years but its 50 years old now (was my grans) and its terminal.......

OMG Like Miranda at the sushi bar 😂

BillieJ · 07/01/2024 22:29

Love my Kitchenaid too. Had it so long, I can't even remember where I got it from, but I have used Harts of Spur before, and they were great.

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 07/01/2024 22:33

I’ve had mine for 8 years and I use it every week. I agree that you have to stop midway and use a rubber spatula to scrape the sides of the bowl but I don’t mind that.

coronafiona · 07/01/2024 22:37

I've never understood why these things are so expensive. 500 quid?!!

NameChangePoP · 07/01/2024 23:01

I bake a lot and when my Kenwood died I bought a KitchenAid. Let's face it, it's a beautiful piece of kit. Anyhow, after a couple of months I just wasn't happy with it. As a basic mixer it's fine. But if you compare how it works and does the job to a Kenwood you will be very disappointed.
In the end I gave it to my daughter and bought another Kenwood Chef Pro XL.
In short:
Aesthetics = KitchenAid
Function = Kenwood
