Raynauds

Morning.

Can anyone help me with this please? DS gets purple hands in the cold. It doesn’t affect his fingers though. They don’t go white. He doesn’t get restricted movement. No numbness and no pins and needles. Hopefully 2 photos attach to my post so you can see what they look like. Obviously we will take further medical advice however DS wants to join the Army. Raynauds is an automatic no for anyone wanting to join.

DH had taken DS to the Drs a couple of years ago for an unrelated issue and had shown the Dr these photos at the time. DH can’t fully remember what was said as it was just a passing discussion. Does anyone have experience of this at all? Thanks for helping. Trying to manage expectations of a 16 year old who wants to join the military.

I have Raynauds. My fingers do go this colour but more commonly they go white, think corpse fingers. I also lose feeling in them. Does your son have those symptoms or just the purple fingers?

biscuitnut · 07/01/2024 18:16

Sorry meant to say if it’s just purple fingers then I doubt it’s Raynauds. Usually the fingers go white and there is a definite numbness followed by pain.

No, no white at all. No pain, loss of feeling or numbness either. Thank you for responding.

It doesn't look like Raynaud's to me.

Muffinbutton · 07/01/2024 18:35

I've got what was described as anti-raynauds. My fingers go red and swell up in the cold. So the opposite to normal Raynauds.

cowgirl42 · 07/01/2024 18:39

Definitely not Raynauds. They really look dead and can take an hour to come back. Completely white, pins and needles and don’t work properly. The blood crystallises in the extremities which is why they go white. I have it. It also proportionally affects women more usually from their thirties. Although men are affected as well.

Noorandapples · 07/01/2024 18:41

Pretty sure it's not raynauds but we aren't qualified to say, ask gp for a specialist referral for him

dementedpixie · 07/01/2024 18:42

My fingers definitely go white and numb with changes in temperature.

IncognitoUsername · 07/01/2024 18:44

DS and I both have Raynauds. Fingers and toes go white and look ‘dead’. Not purple. Obviously see a Dr but that doesn’t look like it to me.

Oppositioblue · 07/01/2024 18:44

Thank you. This does give us a little bit of hope. Definitely going to speak to our GP. Thank you. I really appreciate you posting.

This is what my fingers look like with Raynauds, just the middle one affected on this photo but quite often it's the ring finger too.

And the top of my hand 🥶

So your son's hands don't lose function and get no pain when he gets cold but go slightly red. That's completely normal, I really don't think you need to worry.

Eggsley · 07/01/2024 19:13

I should add, I lose all feeling in the affected fingers, they go completely numb. It can last up to an hour and it's really painful when the feeling starts to come back. I get it in my toes as well, they also go completely white and completely numb.

BeansOnToast32 · 07/01/2024 19:14

I have this issue OP! I don't know what it is. I generally have really cold hands/feet and in cold weather they go purple/red. 95% of the time they stay cold when they change colour but sometimes my fingers and toes go really hot and burn/swell up. Confused My ears also get red and hot sometimes when the weather is cold.

I also have rosacea but that's only supposed to affect your face. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Alargeoneplease89 · 07/01/2024 19:17

This is my hand with raynauds and this is even with central heating. Mine have been purple since I was 14.
