Are you a secret Mumsnetter?

CandidFruit · 07/01/2024 08:40

Does your family/friends/colleagues know you’re on here?

Do you sometimes find yourself bringing up topics into conversation that you’ve read on MN?

Have you ever “caught” anyone on MN in public, or have been “caught” yourself?

Anyone on here who you think you actually would like to be friends with, based purely on something they’ve posted about or commented on?

I’d like to meet The Sistine Chapel Wailer 😆… I think!

Ha yes totally!

Another poster said they had a secret code with a co conspirator MNetter which was they "heard it on radio 4" rather than I read it on mumsnet!

I often ask mumsnet when no one else has the answer!

Love this although some of the absolute nonsense on here is definitely not Radio 4 worthy! 😂

EbonyWood · 07/01/2024 22:03

No one knows I post on and read Mumsnet. I am childless and tbh I think my friends would find it odd if I said I did.

One of my posts a long time ago (under a different name) got picked up by the Daily Mail which was mortifying but I never got caught by anyone I know!

stomachameleon · 07/01/2024 22:03

I openly chat to my partner about it.
My kids roll their eyes.
My sister hates it and views it much the same way as tattle.

cartiersantos · 07/01/2024 22:04

My sister is on here and knows I am but I don't know if she posts or just reads.

But she always talks openly about mumsnet to people and I cringe because I don't want people to know I'm on here.

Sphynxcatenthusiast · 07/01/2024 21:40

I’m always referring to MN to my amused friends.
Obviously I don’t tell them my user name which I keep changing anyway.

Can I derail and ask how you change your username please? I have an android so maybe that's why I can't figure it out ( I see a few issues mentioned with android)

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 07/01/2024 22:04

DH knows I'm on MN but not my name. I am not born in the UK so find lots of inside info of life in the UK. I don't tell anyone in RL, also strongly against the DM if asked, but do read it as it seems to have news first/early, whether it's accurate or not.

Evanesy · 07/01/2024 21:54

My husband knows I’m on here - after a thread I posted about an issue we were having was shared by MN on Facebook, and by some extreme coincidence, it came up as suggested on his Facebook feed!

😱

reddaisies · 07/01/2024 22:05

I'm a secret mumsnetter - well except for my husband! I'd love to know if my friends/sisters are on here! I would never ask them though...

I really discovered it when I had my baby, I think everyone probably does it this way right? You Google a problem you're having and a mumsnet post comes up, you click on it and it's REALLY insightful and honest (bar the usual passive aggressive posters) and then you go back to Google and find another mumsnet post on the same thing! You're thinking wow this forum is quite handy. Next thing you know you've click the download the app pop up and within 2 days, you're addicted!

namelessnameface · 07/01/2024 22:05

My family know im here. But I have various different names for different things, change little details etc.
I've mentioned it a few times but usually under the "oh I saw online" type thing.

Curlewwoohoo · 07/01/2024 22:06

Yeah I'm quite out about it with mixed reactions! Occasionally friends will ask me if I've seen particular threads...so I know they're here too but don't confess!

Tilllly · 07/01/2024 22:07

I occasionally mention it in passing
I assume some people I know are on here but it's never come up
And my user name is my nickname so I guess I'm easily outed

CrackersCheeseNoWinePlease · 07/01/2024 22:07

I am! None of my friends or family know I'm on here, not sure if any of them are though.
I'm pretty confident I've never been recognised on here but I wouldn't know unless anyone asked me,

EarringsandLipstick · 07/01/2024 22:08

My DC know & use it as a counter-argument regarding screen time ('how long do YOU spend on MN?').

No-one else, I'd sometimes mention seeing something on a 'forum'. Like another poster, MN is undoubtedly a waste of my time mostly, but is an easy way to forget about real life for a while. And every so often I see a great thread that resonates or is helpful in a practical way.

Joeslaol24 · 07/01/2024 22:12

My husband and children know and yes they take the piss😂 Actual friends I am not so sure about. Friend who recently had a baby said she is addicted…I did laugh because she is the last person I would expect on MN !

loadedchips · 07/01/2024 22:12

Does your family/friends/colleagues know you’re on here?
No they would think I was a right loser

Do you sometimes find yourself bringing up topics into conversation that you’ve read on MN?
No soon as I shut the app down I forget the threads

Have you ever “caught” anyone on MN in public, or have been “caught” yourself?
No

Anyone on here who you think you actually would like to be friends with, based purely on something they’ve posted about or commented on?
No because I don't recognise anyone's name ever

QueenDramaLlama · 07/01/2024 22:15

The first rule of Mumsnet is that we don't talk about Mumsnet.

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 07/01/2024 22:15

I don't say I'm on MN, I call it my forum.
I don't want my family joining and trying to find me, my dsis's definitely would look for me.
I don't write op's but do reply and I've given away a lot of info about myself and where I live so I'd be easily recognisable.

zigzag716746zigzag · 07/01/2024 22:17

DH knows, but not my (frequently changed) user name.

I am almost certain that a good friend at work is on here because she will often bring up things that are topical.

I suspect DSIL is on here after a couple of Christmases where I got her and her kids things that were suggested in the Christmas threads 😂She sort of looked at me funny, seemed about to say something, and then didn’t.

Who would I like to be friends with from MN? Most of the lovely people from reastie and sideorderofchips Christmas bargain threads. And xenia - I always look forward to her posts but haven’t seen any for months!

Nah... just reply you're using it for parenting research

And boarding schools....

zigzag716746zigzag · 07/01/2024 22:20

Oh, and twice I have ended up with threads in the Daily Fail, but fortunately both times I had changed enough detail to get away with it. However with one (property related) my father phoned me up and read it out to me “to let me know others were in the same position” 😅

LittleRedYoshi · 07/01/2024 22:21

Bloatstoat · 07/01/2024 21:10

There was a thread before Christmas suggesting wearing a Christmas scarf as an alternative to a Christmas jumper e.g. if required to forba work event. What I good idea I thought but had already sourced a hot scratchy Christmas jumper for my work Christmas event. My manager turned up looking cool and classy in a nice blouse with a Christmas scarf on - I would love to know if she's a mumsnetter and got the idea from here but I chickened out of asking her!

This reminds me - about 10 years ago, there was a particular scarf that loads of people on here were buying. It became known as "the Mumsnet scarf" and kind of a secret signal to other Mumsnetters!

Coconutter24 · 07/01/2024 22:23

Secret MN 🙋🏻‍♀️ not really a secret just never told anyone or mentioned it. I got bored of Facebook but whilst I was still on it MN kept popping up so I’d have a read and tbh it was peoples stupidity that got me hooked.

VampireWeekday · 07/01/2024 22:24

I never admit it to other parents, but am weirdly proud of my MN use when the holier than thou men ay work start bitching about the MN TERFS.

teenagetantrums · 07/01/2024 22:28

No not a secret, my DP is always saying are you on mumsnet again, to be honest l always say yes when I'm not 😂. My adult DS always says asks mumsnet and once randomly got involved with a thread about dungeon and dragon's 😂 my life not that interesting and now the teenage dramas over l don't think anyone could identify me, but if they did l wouldn't care.

EarringsandLipstick · 07/01/2024 22:28

I think I've probably demonstrated all too well to them that that is not the case 😂
