If you've ever been selected for jury duty, what did you wear?

I was a student at the time and did it in my university town, so literally just my student clothes! People just wore their normal clothes. Men didn't put on a suit.

Justmuddlingalong · 06/01/2024 22:52

Jeans a t shirt and trainers. The few who'd dressed up felt very uncomfortable and dressed down after the 1st day.

GreyBlackLove · 06/01/2024 22:53

Mostly what I would wear to work- smart casual. So trousers and a shirt, midi dress etc.

YireosDodeAver · 06/01/2024 22:53

Why on earth would anyone care?

Wear what you normally wear for a normal day. You don't need to be particularly smart. I bet most people will be wearing jeans. It's not a job interview. You aren't neing judged at any point. Your clothes are irrelevant.

Redshoeblueshoe · 06/01/2024 22:55

First day everyone wore office attire. After 2 days everyone wore their normal clothes

Thanks to those who answered my question. Much appreciated.

Anything comfortable. Lots of boring sitting about.

I'd probably wear jeans and jumper or dress and tights. Maybe smart jogger and jumper

I'd not wear smart stuff like suit or work wear.

I did it many years ago and was fascinating!

ChrisPackhamsYellowFleece · 06/01/2024 23:56

I've done it twice. Wear whatever is most comfortable. I'd suggest layers as courtroom temperature is unpredictable.

No need to be snarky.

Courts have a very particular dress codes for legal staff, witnesses, courts workers and defendants. It's a perfect reasonable to ask.

Dress code don't apply to jurors.

Klcak · 06/01/2024 23:57

Just trousers/jeans and a top/fleece

Nobody cares as long as you aren't naked.

I fucking hated it, sorry.
Saw the worst of society and some damaged victims. To top it off, the criminal didn't even go to jail.

Lucinda7 · 07/01/2024 00:03

They don't like t shirts with logos on. I wore my normal clothes - top and skirt. Nobody wore a suit but they were smart casual.

SparklyOwls · 07/01/2024 00:06

Just wear respectable and comfortable clothing. I did it during lockdown and we were all in glass boxes with masks on!

Exactly what above poster says. Be comfortable , you'll be sitting a long time

JaniceBattersby · 07/01/2024 00:14

Don’t wear anything that has any kind of controversial or boundary-pushing slogan or logo on it. I’ve seen a juror have to wear an usher’s gown over her clothing (there was nothing else available) because she wore a sex pistols tshirt which the judge deemed inappropriate.

I’d also layer up. Some courts are freezing and some are boiling and very few are the right temperature. You never know which you’ll get until you arrive!

SE13Mummy · 07/01/2024 00:37

I did it recently and we were told casual wear is fine but no football shirts, no slogans that may be considered offensive, and no bare shoulders or stomachs.

Most people wore jeans with jumpers/cardigans. Definitely make sure you have layers. As @JaniceBattersby says, court temperatures are all over the place! I was very glad I had a scarf with me in one of the courts.

Klcak · 07/01/2024 01:11

I would add that you don’t want to draw attention to yourself imo. It’s quite grim in court, I didn’t like being looked at by the sex criminal.
just plain everyday stuff that lots wlll be wearing. Dark/muted colours

FrodoBiggins · 07/01/2024 01:17

Concur with everyone who's said layers, courts are all over the shop with temperature. Something comfortable as the seats may not be, shoes/trainers you can easily shuffle about in as there may be some degree of back and forth as you get let in and out.

Also with bearing in mind court security, thoroughness varies but metal bits on clothes and belts might set off the machine, and if you're anything like me, check your pockets for random hair clips which might also set it off! (Source: I am a barrister who often forgets to empty my pockets and ends up holding up the queue 😩).

Also worth emptying out your bag to bare minimum to avoid having to pour out a load of receipts and cereal bars into the tray at security gate.

7Weeks2Go · 07/01/2024 11:08

Thanks all, very good advice!

Top tip: wear black trousers, a black horizontal striped top, a black beanie hat and a little black mask over the eyes. If you have a big bag you can take, write ‘swag’ on the side of it.

The judge will love you.

(I’ve done jury service. Everyday clothes are fine.)

smart casual, i would not go looking slobby. Avoid any perfume, i remember sitting next to a juror and the perfume was intense.

RoseBucket · 07/01/2024 12:20

I’d wear smart casual, trousers, skirt, smart jumper/blazer. I wouldn’t wear jeans out of respect for the victims, I’d want them to know I had a bit of consideration.

Shouldgetupearlier · 07/01/2024 12:22

I went reasonably smart - black trousers/smartish top. Personally I think it’s good to look as though you’re serious as you’re making potentially life/changing decisions.

Goatymum · 07/01/2024 12:25

It was a heatwave when I did it so a t shirt and 3/4 length shorts! !

BriocheForBreakfast · 07/01/2024 12:29

I wore fairly casual clothes - jeans, nice top and took at cardi. I wore my Converses some days too. I was smarter on day 1 😂
